Nets: Plenty of work ahead

Even though Shareef Abdur- Rahim says he is committed to New Jersey -- more on that later, if you can tolerate the drama -- the Nets are left with a laundry list of things to sort out in the next week and a half.

Their next priority is to work out a sign-and-trade agreement with Portland so that Abdur- Rahim can get a contract that will more accurately reflect his market value (six years, $38 million), rather than have him settle for a deal based on the midlevel exception (five years, $27 million to $30 million), the extra fund teams can use on free agents.

And for the record, Aaron Goodwin is not going to be happy if the Nets aren't successful.

"I would hope that New Jersey will exhaust every opportunity to get that done," the agent said yesterday.

The Nets are trying to get Portland to agree to accept their $4.9 million trade exception, which would enable them to give Abdur- Rahim the extra year and more money. The Blazers, however, are holding the Nets up for more compensation -- specifically, a first- round pick, or the draft rights to Mile Ilic -- neither of which is going to happen, the Nets maintain.

There remains the possibility that the Nets will offer multiple No. 2 picks, or perhaps even a conditional No. 1 pick, however. While they are confident that Abdur-Rahim's word was his bond when he told them he would come to New Jersey even for the midlevel, they don't want to take any chances on the possibility that he'll change his mind.

Besides, saving the midlevel exception for their next move is crucial: They want to use it on Keyon Dooling.

The Miami swing guard has many suitors -- Atlanta, Cleveland, Orlando and the Lakers, to name a few -- but the Nets have as good a chance to land him as anyone if the money is right. Their only problem is that they don't know whether Miami is amenable to accepting their trade exception.

"Miami is trying to get its own roster fixed up right now," said team president Rod Thorn, adding that he hasn't spoken with the Heat.

If Thorn can get Dooling aboard, the Nets' eight-man rotation would be all but complete. Their next move would be an attempt to augment their depth, perhaps by pursuing a player left exposed by the amnesty provision of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, such as Brian Grant of the Lakers.

Of course, all of that becomes more complicated if Portland doesn't comply.

According to a Western Conference general manager yesterday, the Nets may have dodged a bullet when Abdur-Rahim told them of his decision, but there still may be some subterfuge in the next few days. The GM said that the Trail Blazers are now trying to work out a sign-and-trade for Abdur-Rahim with Sacramento and a third team that would entice the free agent with a much larger contract, one in the $60 million region.

Goodwin said he had no knowledge of any such negotiation, and a Nets official said he didn't expect that to happen. Verbal commitments have been known to be worthless, however, notably last season with Carlos Boozer and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cavaliers:
Free-agent forward Donyell Marshall agreed to terms on a four-year contract with Cleveland, giving the rebuilt club another player to complement LeBron James.

Marshall, an 11-year-veteran who played for the Toronto Raptors last season, was courted by a handful of teams before reaching an agreement with the Cavaliers, said his agent, Andy Miller.

"We look at this as an opportunity to join a team that could win an NBA championship real soon," Miller said.

Miller would not disclose financial parameters of the deal.

Marshall is the third significant player signed by the Cavs this summer and probably not the last. The club, which was $28 million under the salary cap, is expected to officially re-sign All- Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and sign guard Larry Hughes on Friday when the free-agent signing period begins.

The Cavs are also looking for a point guard and have reportedly talked with the agents for Marko Jaric and Damon Stoudamire.

Coming off the bench last season, the 32-year-old Marshall averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and shot a career-best 42 percent on 3-pointers for the Raptors. The Cavs are desperate for outside shooting to offset teams collapsing on Ilgauskas or double- and triple-teaming James.

Marshall has averaged 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds over his 11-year career, and despite being 6-9, he has made 35 percent of his 3-pointers.

In 2003-04, Marshall was the only player in the NBA to rank in the top 25 in rebounds (9.9), blocks (1.5) and 3-point percentage (.403). A star at Connecticut, Marshall was selected with the No. 4 overall pick in 1994 by Minnesota, which traded him after one season to Golden State for Tom Gugliotta.

If he is going to play for a crappy team might as well get paid top dollar.

Interesting.

"a sign-and-trade for Abdur-Rahim with Sacramento and a third team"

Who might that 3rd team be?

Hmmm...you get a 3rd team involved when salaries aren't matching or when you don't want what a team wants to send you back.

Hedo and Mercer for the rotting corpse of DFerry's career redux?

What's funny is that the aforementioned rotting corpse of Danny Ferry would have given us more than Hedo and Mercer combined.......

But yeah woudn't surprise me if it was CIA involved in that three-way. I still want payback for the whole Krctic thing.....Rod Thorn needs a receipt for that.

Western Conference general manager yesterday

WC GM = Portland's. :lol

I think Kenny Thomas is the only decent piece available on the Kings (doubt they'd be willing to give up Peja).

but if the signing of the CBA is delayed until Aug 1 and NJs trade exception expires on July 30, they will have to use the MLE
