Report: Vince Young to try out for Packers on MondayBy Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

August 5, 2013 12:16 am ET

Despite being cut a year ago by the Bills (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/BUF/buffalo-bills), most likely ending his career, Vince Young reportedly had kept himself in shape in case a desperate NFL team wanted to give him another chance to play.
The Packers (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/GB/green-bay-packers) apparently are that squad, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette (http://www.packersnews.com/article/20130804/PKR0101/130804025), which reports that Young was spotted a local airport Sunday night and will work out with the Packers on Monday.
Young tried out (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/22183150/report-raiders-no-longer-interested-in-vince-young) with the Raiders (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/OAK/oakland-raiders) a few months ago, and he reportedly had a strong performance at the 2013 University of Texas pro day workout. But the Raiders didn't sign him after drafting Tyler Wilson (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1632251/tyler-wilson) in the fourth round of the draft, leaving Young in purgatory (though he did end up graduating from college (http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/bruce-feldman/22259780/vince-young-graduating-from-ut-even-tops-winning-a-national-title) in May).
Still, Young kept himself in shape after not playing at all in 2012.
“That's my craft, that's all I do in the offseason," Young said in March (http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000153988/article/vince-young-dishes-some-details-after-texas-pro-day). "When it's time for me to get ready for the season, I'm so focused on the plays, the preparation, you don't want to be thinking about footwork when you get with the team.”
Young, though, did not impress in his last NFL job. The Bills released him (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/nfl-rapidreports/19940861/bills-notebook-inconsistency-leads-to-vince-youngs-release) three months after signing him following his 12-for-26, 103-yard, two-interception performance in his final preseason game with Buffalo.
“I think he had (the playbook) down with his thought processes, but we just didn't see the consistency,” said then-Bills coach Chan Gailey.
Before Buffalo, Young was unimpressive as a backup with the Eagles (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/PHI/philadelphia-eagles) following his departure from Tennessee, where he went 30-17 as a starting quarterback while making two Pro Bowls with the Titans (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/TEN/tennessee-titans).
If Young gets signed by the Packers, he'd likely be competing with Graham Harrell (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/516987/graham-harrell) andB.J. Coleman (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1244779/bj-coleman) for the right to back up Aaron Rodgers (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/419780/aaron-rodgers).

He deserves another chance. He made some mistakes, but he didn't deserve the blackballing perpetrated by that that coward Jeff Fisher.

:lol after the season STL had last year vs. what Vince Young has done since leaving the oppression of :crybig mean Jeff Fisher:cry, the idea that Fisher was a horrible coach holding him back should be put to rest. He's easily one of the 10 best coaches in the NFL.

there's no danger of Harrell putting a gun in his mouth after getting booed, so there's that

Harrell knowing how to throw a football makes him better.

Handling a snap is another story :lol

tbh the packers are probably just trolling vince young. they play the redskins in week 2 and need det rg3 simulation in practice. then clipboard the rest of the season.

Blake
08-06-2013, 04:54 PM
They also play against Kap in week 1.

Definitely doesn't hurt to have him simulate them in practice against Packer first team defense

Are they gonna train VY the same way Washington trained RG3 by having him chuck spears calibrated a certain way for the first half of practice and then a football for the second half?

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was just to practice so they're prepared against RGIII, Kap, and Wilson-like QBs...might even cut him and then bring him back just so it's a week by week thing and not even guaranteed cash. Or maybe he's just better than most thought.

This. Packers are a smart organization..always have been. It hurt absolutely nothing to bring him in, and after supposedly a good showing in the UT pro day, they took a chance. I guess he did enough. Didn't get to see it, but I'm proud of the dude. After everything he's gone through, he stepped it up and did work. Good job, Vince.

No doubt..you called it. Still a good gig for a dude that was sitting on the couch a few weeks ago. Especially when most thought he'd never play again. And he looked good for that one drive, tbh.

Exactly...hopefully he'll stay out of trouble. Smallest market in pro sports if I'm not mistaken.

There's nothing to do in GB. As long as he stays out of high schoolers hot tubs he'll be fine.

After the shit he's had to go through, backup QB is a huge deal. He's got work..and GB is a great organization to be a part of. They've got tradition, good coaching, and hard working players. I'm more happy that he ended up in GB than anything else.

Man I'm a UT fan but get off this shit already.

The "shit" Vince Young has had to go through was all in his own mind. Yeah, he's a dumb black guy with a sketchy upbringing who happened to be very athletic and found a way to channel that through football, but a grown man shouldn't collapse in the NFL the way Vince did. He had some bright moments at Tennessee for sure, won some games, but the dark moments put an eclipse over all that shit. You don't defeat the greatest team of all time in the BCS championship, get drafted high in the first round of the NFL, find mild success early and then go to war with your head coach like that. I don't think anything Fisher did to young was irrational. The money problems Vince had after bombing out of the NFL and shit like the 300k loan to throw a birthday party shows me that Vince was an immature little fucker well into his late 20s. Shit's going around these days. As a UT fan it's nice to see him get his act together, earn a backup job for a good team and get another chance. Hopefully he doesn't screw it up this time. But nobody should feel sorry for Vince except Vince.

Shit, I should do an E! True Hollywood story for VY. Maybe make a series out of it, already got the Peyton one and a decent treatment for Dan Marino that got started on and kinda forgot about. Grantland here I come. . . .

Oh..I agree with you completely. The shit was all in his own head. But it still remains that he went through it, and it was hard for him, because Mack coddled his ass so much he wasn't hardened enough at the time for the NFL. Maybe now he is after dealing with all that shit. Only one way to find out.
