MPG Is Stupid

As is often the case, some other countries are better than USA:

1) have been metric for a long time

and

2) measure vehicles in liters of fuel per 100 Km.

This comment pretty much nails this answer to a question nobody's asking.

Made my head hurt trying to figure out the mpg the minivan I was renting in Europe last year should get (listed as L/100KM).

Neither system is superior to the other; although our ratings are more accurate than Euro's tend to be (they are even more optimistic than the American ratings - at least in my experience)

BTW, the VW Touran we drove for 6200KM returned about 39 mpg - loaded with 6 of us and gobs of luggage - always at extra legal (in the U.S.) speeds.

Was so efficient have bought the same engine in a vehicle here; a new Passat Diesel. Don't know why VW doesn't export that van we had over here....
