I moved that post in a new thread because it's worthy in that period where there are basically no Spurs news.

So, it's safe to say that Thomas won't go overseas. It's also somewhat likely that he will sign a contract with some guaranteed money. As I've said in another thread, a good contract for both Spurs and Thomas would be a Neal like contract. Spurs have a little left on their MLE to offer that kind of contract to Thomas.

I think he'll be a solid 15th man this season. I wish the team had another spot open to give training camp a little more intrigue, but I'm okay with going into the season with this roster, especially since the team maintains its flexibility.

DeJuan Blair version 2.0 ?

I mean as far as PT is concerned for 2014, I'd imagine Duncan/Splitter/Baynes/ maybe Pendergraph are the 4 bigs that'll play.

Don't forget Diaw. He is the 3rd big. However, Deshaun would play the 3 and small ball four.

DeShaun Thomas summer to do list:

1st Place -- Bring Oden to SA.

2nd Place -- Find house in SA.

3rd Place -- You're fired.

There aren't much options on the market and Thomas had a decent summer league so I'm not opposed to this if he's signing here.

I was hoping for a player with more experience though and would suspect that Thomas will spend a lot of time in Austin like Cory Joseph did.

I definitely think DeShaun will be a good option for the 15th roster spot. Obviously, preseason games need to be played before the final roster is set, but he definitely showed some good things in the summer league.

He could be looking for a house...but probably only for down the road. You know, if he makes the team and gets a contract. I'm sure he's in SA to meet with the team anyways. Why not meet with a realtor and fantasize for a while about making the team and buying a house when you were going out to dinner anyways. See what's out there.

I still think he'll make the 15th roster spot though. RC Buford said "He's a very talented player, we were very surprised he fell so far in the draft" And "Obviously there's a vacancy that needs to be filled behind Kawhi."

Then again...he did say "Deshaun is going to have to play A LOT different than he did at Ohio State" when the commentators questioned his defensive ability during a summer league game. So we'll see. I hope he makes the team. He was arguably the best player in the best conference last year. And the Spurs were interested in him early way before the draft (hence the whole phone number controversy).

A bit presumptuous to say he is going to be offered the 15th spot but he would be the best the Spurs can get right now for a cheap contract. Until the Spurs confirm it though, not going to say he is on the team. He definitely deserves a shot though and he proved his value in summer league so I really hope the Spurs take the time in molding him to be a contributor eventually to the team. Hopefully, he can get some consistent minutes this year whether it be on the Spurs roster or on the Toros.

It makes sense to start the season and man the backup SF spot with Thomas, and a combination of SGs. If Thomas blossoms then the F.O. looks brilliant. If not, then they have Bonner and Diaw's contracts to package with a guard to land a decent player come mid-season.

Actually Austin is an easy commute from San Antonio.
If the Spur ownership had been really smart and far sighted they would have built the arena half way between the two cities. In fact, that is my hope for a future NFL team and stadium!

San Marcos or just below would be great, but the name would need to be the Texas ???s (insert name of your choice).
Not to veer too far off subject, but we already have the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, and the Houston Texans so it would probably need to be the Texas Texians, Cabayeros, or something typical Texan, and Central Texan would be best.
That is why I was happy when the Saints moved here for three games, the San Antonio Saints was perfect.
Ok, back to the subject now. Sorry!

I really hope the front office gives him an opportunity by having him start as Kawhi's backup, his job to lose kinda thing. If he gets over the jitters I think he will be a great player and he'll be able to help out Manu a lot too. He'll be a backup, he's still got great size and correct me if I'm wrong but his footwell is phenomenal. He's does all this while playing the premier position in the NBA with Lebron and Durant.

This is also barring any career affecting injuries.

From what i've heard he is a unlikely fit at small forward in the NBA, because he lacks quickness to defend on the wing. He could make the roster, but Manu is likely going to play primarily backup small forward. I think it would be best for everyone involved for that to happen. Playing a second unit consisting of

Joseph/Mills
Belineli
Ginobil
Diaw
Baynes/ Pendergraph

four play makers and four 3 point shooters on a bench should be helpful take pressure off Manu. The bench lacks experience though, with only Manu, Beli, and Diaw playing consistent minutes throughout their careers.

SF isn't the premier position in the NBA ,PF is. Its the second weakest position in the NBA behind Center.

I agree, Marco over Ginobili at the backup two. Then, DeShaun get minutes after their lions share. He really needs a chance to show what he can do and I think the Spurs are already impressed with him. There is still DeColo too though. So there is that, DeShaun may go to Austin but I expect him to do well there and for the team to give him minor minutes at some point.

four play makers and four 3 point shooters on a bench should be helpful take pressure off Manu. The bench lacks experience though, only Manu, Beli, and Diaw playing consistent minutes throughout their careers.

Add Bonner to those three, he showed an aptitude to create this season instead of stand still at the three point line when he received the ball. I also recall that he added a hook shot to his arsenal this season. He's also king of the regular season +/-, heck, the team could probably ride that alone through to the first round of the playoffs. Add that to the possibility of Bonner continuing to work on his footwork and coming back with an added weapon. Yeah, he didn't exactly stand out in the Finals but he may have earned some of Pop's trust back. Obviously, he has to be considered before Pendergraph and Baynes. I could see the team using Pendergraph during the regular season but they've shown over and over again that they are going to trust their veterans over their new players during a tight series.

That puts the Spurs at five experienced backups, which is exactly what the team would need in another tight series.

Joseph - don't forget to add his Finals and Team Canada leadership experience
Belinelli - he's got confidence, that alone could get him on the floor
Ginobili
Diaw
Bonner

Being in a tight position, I would trust any combination of the starters and the names listed above. Now, if any of DeColo, Thomas, Pendergraph, Baynes or Mills (Mr. insurance for any of Joseph, Belinelli and Ginobili) begin to shine well, then the team's in an even better position. This might be the best training camp roster that the front office has had in a while.

Can't wait for the season to start and here's hoping that everyone stays healthy.
