View Full Version : With Brett Brown officially gone, who will the Spurs hire to replace him?

Damn. We've already lost Bud, and now we lose Brett. Best of luck to both of them, I think they'll make great head coaches.

Sadly for us Spurs fans, our coaching situation is a little thin. From what I can see, there's suddenly a lot less experience.

With that being said, what route to you think the Spurs go in replacing Brown? Do we branch out and sign somebody with no ties to the team, or do we reach out to somebody we're all familiar with?

Just a hunch personally, but I could see us trying to get back Don Newman, who left a season or two ago to be a higher ranking assistant in Washington.

What do you think?

I hope the spurs are reaching out to PJ for a possible return to the spurs.

Just saw espn first take discuss Brett Brown and then footage of Chip Engelland talking with Tony Parker is played.

Do they not have google search over there? Imbeciles.

We won a title with PJ as the head assistant. Maybe PJ talks Pop out of taking TD out in game 6. Such a stupid move.

Oberto has no business being an assistant coach in the NBA. If you are going the former player route I would go with Bruce Bowen or Michael Finley.

I'm sure Pop doesn't give two shits what you want, and will do what he wants, and that's strongly rumored to be Oberto. Bowen has a cushy TV gig with ESPN he probably won't want to leave for assistant pay, and I don't think Finley is in Pop's good graces after bailing on the Spurs to go to Boston his final season.

I think Bowen would do good as a coach, in terms of X and Os. But I would prefer him to be a Chad Forcier type of coach, on the Defensive side of things. Oberto, I don't think he's gonna got the job as a lead assistant, but he's very likely to get on the staff due to his bball IQ, similar to Udoka and Vaughn. Not sure about Boylen's capabilties as an X and Os guy, but I think he'll do okay.

?? Udoka was already here.

My guess is Oberto.

I know it. What i meant is that Udoka will be promoted to take Brown spot.
Last season, the coaching hierarchy was: 1st Pop, 2nd Bud, 3rd Brown.
This year, it will be: 1st Pop, 2nd Boylen, 3rd Udoka.

Spurs might add another assistant coach but it will be to occupate a low level rank in Spurs coaching tree. Oberto might fit that but it could also be an unknown. I don't see them adding someone like AJ or PJ.

how many high profile assistants does a team need?
Jim Boylen comes in with a CV view assistant coaches in the NBA can match. (18 seasons as an NBA assistant, 11 of those with the Rockets and Rudy Tomjanovich).
Chip Engelland is the undisputed best shooting coach in the NBA and I highly doubt he is limited to shooting affairs, even most see him just in this department (IMO he is a coach for player development as much as Chad Forcier is)
Chad Forcier meanwhile has 12 seasons as an NBA assistant coach under his belt.
IMO, even after the loss of Bud and Brown, this core plus Pop is superior to any coaching team in the league. the question, if there are one or two more assistant coaches (Ime plus whoever else they might hire), is kind of marginal.

btw. after they hired Boylen, it might have been necessary to let Brown go, to avoid a conflict in the pecking order.
overall, even it hurts to see all the long time assistants leave, I like the coaching staff they got for the next season.

Oberto has no business being an assistant coach in the NBA.
What makes you say that? He's the classic smart, hard-working player who maximized limited physical abilities -- exactly the kind of guy who often makes a successful coach. It's fine if there's another guy you just like better, but I don't understand what would make you think Oberto's not cut out for the role.

I'm sure Oberto would be a fine assistant but Pop already has one recently retired pro on the bench in Udoka. Forcier and Engelland aren't very seasoned either. Boylen has been around the league for a while but is new to the Spurs. Would be nice to round out the staff with some corporate knowledge, if possible.

Udoka: only guy more worthless than Bogans.

Every time he was on the court, I heard a vacuum playing in the background, because he sucks it up.

I hope to god it's not Udoka.

I wonder if they will hire Ime Udoka. The guy hasn't been playing, I don't think, and I heard that he was interested in coaching. I think he would be a good addition because he used to play for them and knows the system. What are your thoughts? I'll hang up and listen.

What do you mean? You don't agree with me? I think he would make a good coach because of his agressiveness. Isn't he the one that got into a fight during a game overseas? Plus his girlfriend is Nia Long and that should bring some publicity to the Spurs.

How is it comedy? I mean, sure the guy wasn't a star in the league but how does that saying go? "Those who can't... coach."

Anyway, disagree with me all you want but I think he would be a decent fit.

Does anyone know how good his english is? Does Nia Long speak Nigerian or can Ime's English pass? I am just wondering because if it were to happen, how well would he be able to communicate with the players?

I think TJ Ford would be a good candidate for the future. He seems to be focusing on developing HS and college kids at the moment but he also got some coaching experience with the Toros. Those developement skills should really come in handy for a rebuilding Spurs team.

Johnson attacked Malik Rose in the shower his last year here. Malik was Duncan's best friend.

I appreciate that he played well when we won our first championship but the little general is a big ole douche.
