View Full Version : Lakers: D'antoni gettin' ready to ruin Jordan Hill

When the season was over, however, Hill asked D’Antoni -- who coached the player in New York before the No. 8 pick was shipped out of town just months into his rookie season -- what he needed to do to stay on the floor next season.

“He talked about what I need to work on for this coming summer,” Hill told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “My jump shot -- he definitely wanted me to work on my outside jumper.”

The experiment to turn Pau Gasol into an outside-oriented big man blew up in D’Antoni’s face last season. But in Hill, who has played eight fewer seasons in the league than Gasol, the coach found a much more malleable subject.

“That’s mostly what I’ve been focusing on this whole summer, not so much the post work because I know I can go down to the block and easily get an offensive rebound and putback,” said Hill, who ranked sixth in the NBA last season in rebounds per 36 minutes (among players who played 25 games or more), according to BasketballReference.com. “We got Pau Gasol that can focus on the paint and we got Chris Kaman that can focus on the block. So I just want to be a stretch 4. Just try to spread the floor a little bit, just show a little range. I’ve been working on it the whole summer, trying to focus on that, on my 3-ball. It got a lot better. I’m just ready to put it all together and showcase it.”

Hill, who shot 61.8 percent inside of 5 feet last season en route to a career-high 6.7 points per game average, did not fare as well the farther away from the basket he went. According to NBA.com Stats Cube, Hill shot 35.7 percent from 5-9 feet last season and 30.8 percent from 15-19 feet. And he missed the only two 3-point shots he attempted (in fact, he’s 0-for-9 on 3s for his career). However, there was signs of promise. He shot 50 percent from 10-14 feet and 42.9 percent from 20-24 feet, but the opportunities were limited (fewer than 10 attempts during the season from each of those spots).

Fucking D'Antoni is a dumbass. Not saying people won't improve but asking Hill to suddenly start dropping those 13-15 footers like Mark Price and turn him into a stretch 4 is fucking ridiculous :lol

Playa I think I have to agree with Dan on this one...if Hill can learn to hit that shit...just imagine how it opens up our offense for Kobe and Nash to penetrate... I'm always in favor in a big man learning to consistently hit that shit...Just like Kareem and Hakeem did...they were still very effective low post scorers and defenders...but I must say this is truly challenging a person to improve their game...Look at Tammy for example..in his prime that gay ass bank shot was money..he loved hitting it off the backboard (I wonder why :lol) but he was still dominant in the post...

don't listen to the OP...dude is short bus shortie :lol

Yeah let's make our best offensive rebounder stand 15-18 feet from the basket. lol danthony

that's not what he's doing...in a traditional post up offense maybe...it's all about cutting, Hi-posting, pick and roll, re-posting, and crashing the boards..something Dwight couldn't figure out and apparently you can't either...good move by Mike D....

I remember Antoni saying that post ups were the least efficient plays in basketball. I swear to God that clown said that in the press conference when he was hired. Lakers should have fired him after he said that.

he's right...don't let Shaq fool ya....Dwight is a weak post up player....you're game has to be pimp tight in a fluid offense to be posting up...Kobe can pull it off and Dirk can pull it off because they keep the offense in motion..Dwight posts up and everything stops because he a horrible post passer...

Whats wrong with adding an outside shot to your game even if your a big man? Improving your game is improving your game, if he can do it, hell be a better player. Salty fuckin OP, failing at spinning shit.

Because you take one of your best rebounders and post players and make him start shooting 3's has worked well throughout time :lol

If pau, a solid shooter, struggled with this, why would Jordan Hill, a rugged, untalented guy succeed? He's serviceable because he's tough/strong down low and Antoni is taking that away from him. He's gna use Hill like earl Clark. And koolaid is on board with it :lol

_'Antoni just wants to you shoot and run, run and shoot. Rebounding would be just a bonus to him, while defense? he never gives a shit about it, not at all...

Kobe tore his achilles so Antoni will have him return by preseason and play him 38mpg before the season even starts and he tears his ACL 2 games before the preseason ends while sacrificing his body to keep the Lakers over .500.

Kirby says he will return for the playoffs but his team finishes last in the league and they draft Wiggins.

How the fuck is Spurfan criticizing this? Like half of Duncan's shots were that shitty no arc jump shot and he's the Spurs' best rebounder by far.

Only thing that's laughable is Hill saying he's gonna have a 3 point shot. That's not gonna happen. But he'll have his place if he can hit something outside the paint.

Tim has had a jump shot since he was in college. Jordan Hill in his NBA career has been strictly a restricted area scorer. Now they want him being a stretch 4. Even though Tim took a ton of jumpers this year, few would watch his game and describe him as a stretch 4. This would be like the Spurs trying to make DeJuan Blair a stretch 4

Don't see the big deal with this at all. It's not like D'antoni is asking Shaquille O'Neal to be a three point shooter, or even Pau Gasol. I'd tend to agree more with the idea that D'antoni's offense ruined Pau than the notion that it will ruin Hill. Jordan Hill isn't a primary scorer or much of a low post threat. And it's not like bigs can just camp underneath the rim in the NBA. There is an offensive 3 seconds rule still. A guy like Hill still has to be out near the perimeter when he sets picks and off-the-ball screens. He'll have a few opportunities a game for a midrange jumper out of pick-and-pop situations when both defenders stay with the ball or when the defense collapses and he's the open kickout. It's probably a good idea if he works on his jumper so he can actually make it when he gets one of those few opportunities.

And it won't be like being out on the perimeter once in a while will prevent him from attacking the offensive glass. Even with the development of his jumper, Serge Ibaka has been able to maintain a high level of offensive rebounding. In theory, it's probably a good idea for Hill to become a better jumpshooter. Because he's not a primary post scorer, if he can consistently hit his jumper, it will help spread the floor a little better for the guys who are the primary scorers. And when he's out on the weakside, he can still be aggressive going after offensive rebounds and putbacks.

If D'antoni was doing this to Shaquille, it would be one thing. But Jordan Hill is an average offensive player who probably needs to add a midrange jumper to help force defenses to play the Lakers offense more honestly.

Jordan Hill pre-season after 6 games: 0 3pt attempts, shooting 31% inside the arc.

How's that "stretch 4" role working out?

Ahhahahahahahahah!

D'antoni was too impressed by Bonner when we swept them, he wants to develop a bonner of his own.
