It's been a great year for South Park Mall's Waldenbooks and its customers.

The bookstore recently completed its first year of operation, and store officials said it was far better than they had anticipated.

"It's been simply amazing," said Kim Tyer, Waldenbooks store manager. She said the store exceeded sales predictions for the first year by 21 percent.

"This community has been amazing to us, and that's what made this incredible. We were able to serve the people in a way that they wanted this year, and it's been an amazing year for us."

Many South Side residents fought for more than six years to get a bookstore in their area.

Because of that, Tyer explained that they've worked to keep the store in touch with the South Side community through specific materials residents have requested, such as books in Spanish and children's books. She said those two categories are the most requested, and many of the popular titles they stock in English now are carried in Spanish.

Tyer said the store has a number of regular customers.

"It's about time," said customer Josie Ibaņez, who has visited the bookstore several times during the year. "All of the bookstores in the city are on the North Side, and I think that the South Side does need more stores like this."

"I like it," said Omar Martin, another customer. Martin said he shops at bookstores all across San Antonio, and although this was his first visit to the South Side's Waldenbooks, it was a positive experience.

"They have a lot of magazines," he said. "I like reading magazines."

"They're very thankful to see us here," Tyer said. "The only negative thing that we have heard is that they want us to be bigger, like the other bookstores."

Customers are looking for the amenities that other bookstores across the city have, including a coffee bar, chairs and couches, she said.

However, while they have looked into the possibility of expanding the store, the mall is running at full capacity and there's no room, Tyer added.

"It's 100 percent leased," she said. "But there's definitely the possibility of another location somewhere else."

Tyer added that a new store was not likely to happen any time soon.

"We'll want to make sure that this store stays consistent," she said. "We want to be around for a long time."
