Great news. Good team, from what I hear. And that means the Spurs aren't content to give the 15th spot to someone who doesn't project to be able to help this season.

I was hoping DeShaun Thomas would make the Spurs team this season, but hopefully he finds his way on the team soon. I think he's going to be a great player. I wonder who will get that roster spot?

He wasn't going to play much for the Spurs this year, had he made the team. This is a more appropriate move for his development.

I had a feeling he wasn't going to make the team, even after he was seen with the real estate agent.
I think the Spurs will just keep that roster spot open like they usually do for a series of ten day contracts.
If they do sign someone else soon I'll be very very surprised.

Disappointed. I was hoping he'd make the team even if he spent nearly all of the time in Austin.

I'm sure this will be better for his development. I just doubt the Spurs use the open roster spot any time soon or at all.

I was hoping he'd make the team but I can agree that the overseas experience and additional development opportunity are a better investment by the Spurs.

And it'll open up a spot for the bargain bin later in the season when rosters trim down.

I hope that a player like Thompson to get a training-camp invite on a non-guaranteed deal. Then, if he doesn't play well the Spurs can give 10-days or maybe bring over an international player mid-season.

He certainly will.

Nanterre is a very small team in France but they put a huge upset last year by winning the French league which gave them the right to play the Euroleague. They will have a hard time to even win 1 game in Euroleague. Now, the bright side is that Thomas should get a lot of playing time and it's a team that really take care of its players.

I looked at the current roster for the team and it looks like Will Daniels is the starting small forward. I don't know anything about him but from his stats he seems to be a one dimensional player, a scorer. If Thomas demonstrates the he can do more than score, perhaps he'll be able to challenge for the starting position.

Don't know why so many Spurs fans struggle to accept that T-Mac is done as an NBA player. Dude couldn't score in garbage time. Sure, he can play "point forward" except we don't really need that at the wing position.

Besides, I would hope that T-Mac wouldn't have to struggle between playing on the Spurs (an NBA team) or playing in China. I would think he, like every other American good enough to play in the NBA, would pick the Spurs over playing in China.

I'm going on record and saying that I don't think Deshaun Thomas will never play a regular season game for the Spurs. He's not "long", and did FAR worse on the combine agility and sprints than DeJuan Blair did, so he'll never be able to defend either wing position. No defend, no play in SA.

Deshaun Thomas has decided to play in France and not Spain.

"In this business, you have to think about family (Thomas has a 17-month-old son). I still could have gone to (training camp) and tried to make the (Spurs’) roster, but with my son and a family to provide for, I had to look at that. And developing a year ain't going to hurt.

It was kind of tough, because I wanted to make the roster. But if training camp didn't go well, I’d be in the (NBA Development) League, and that (pays) like a part-time job." -Deshaun Thomas

Deshaun Thomas is a smart guy, because had he decided to play for the Austin Toros in the D-League Spurs' would have lost his rights to the team. Not only has Thomas' made a great financial decision on his part in playing in France, he's also protected himself from getting signed by another NBA team. It's also worth mentioning that he didn't have to do that, but that just shows that he wants to be a Spur. -TTSD

Nanterre is a nice place for Thomas to start his professional career. It's a small team based on good human values. They have the same same coach for over 25 years that is known to be a good teacher for young players. They also plays a quality offensive basketball.

Nanterre Euroleague season will be almost for sure be finished in December so there will have the possibility for Spurs to do like with Baynes and sign Thomas after that if he has been good in that first half of the season. Thomas will also be seen by a lot of NBA scouts with one of his teammate being the draft prospect Mam Jaiteh.

Good point, could really help him if he doesn't get on the Spurs roster next year (and they have 2 other SFs stashed in Europe so who knows).

I thought they should have given him the 15th spot but then again I feel like the way it turned out is good for his career.

The same two who were always going to play them: Ginobili and Green.

Thomas was never going to play ahead of Belinelli, nor is whatever scrub they bring in to provide depth at SF.

From Nanterre's official website:
http://www.jsfnanterre.com/actualite/basket/pro/2657/deshaune-thomas-rejoint-officiellement-la-jsf-nanterre

They gave some interesting details about Thomas:
- 2 Spanish, 1 Italian and 1 Russian teams were also after him but he picked Nanterre to play the Euroleague.
- After his first great SL games, Nanterre's coach tried to get him but he was out of reach because Spurs let him know that he could get their last roster spot.
- In mid August and with Spurs not offering Thomas enough guarantees that he would get the 15th roster spot, he decided to look at the overseas market.
- They said he will be there to work on some aspects of his game like his explosiveness, his speed and his versatility before trying again his chance in NBA.
- He will arrive in France in a week with his wife and his baby.

When you look back at his SL, Thomas had 3 very good games followed by 2 bad ones. These 2 bad games could have cost him a contract with some guaranteed money. This article also confirms what Thomas said to the Ohio medias that Spurs don't know what to do with their 15th roster spot for the moment.

Thomas says he’ll play in France

Deshaun Thomas, who left Ohio State with a year of eligibility remaining and was the 58th pick in the NBA draft, by the San Antonio Spurs, will play in France this season, he said today.

Earlier, Spanish and European basketball websites reported Thomas was close to signing with Estudiantes Madrid, which plays in Spain’s top league, the Liga Endesa.

But when first contacted this afternoon, Thomas said another opportunity had come up and he was considering it. While we were talking, Thomas took a call from his agent, J.R. Hensley, and said he had agreed to a contract to play for a team in Paris.

Thomas was not sure of the name of the team, and Hensley said last night that no agreement had been reached with anyone. “We are still evaluating all options,” Hensley said in a text message.

Thomas, the Big Ten scoring leader last season, played for the Spurs’ entry in the Las Vegas Summer League in July and averaged a team-high 12.4 points and 5 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per game. He made 41.4 percent of his field goal attempts, including 37.5 percent of his threes, in five games.

But the Spurs have a history of letting their draft picks, even first-rounders, gain more seasoning overseas before signing them or trading their negotiating rights. Barring a trade, they will retain exclusive rights to Thomas through at least the 2014 draft.

Thomas said he and Hensley spoke with the Spurs last week about offers Thomas had received from European teams.

“They didn’t know what they want to do with their 15 (roster) spots . . . and I needed to make a decision,” Thomas said.

“In this business, you have to think about family (Thomas has a 17-month-old son). I still could have gone to (training camp) and tried to make the (Spurs’) roster, but with my son and a family to provide for, I had to look at that. And developing a year ain’t going to hurt.

“It was kind of tough, because I wanted to make the roster. But if training camp didn’t go well, I’d probably be in the (NBA Development) League, and when you go in the D League, you need another part-time job.”

Despite the fact he will play overseas and not in the NBA next season, Thomas said he does not regret giving up his final season at Ohio State. He was philosophical, saying he puts his fate in God’s hands.

“God makes people who are very talented in this world not have things easy in life . . . to see how tough you are. Are you willing to keep fighting and doing what you’ve got to do?” Thomas said.

“If it takes a year to develop and get better, that’s what it takes. Some guys hang their head down and think it’s over, but it’s not. God put me in a great position to play overseas and develop another year and keep following my dreams.”

Deshaun Thomas

"Nanterre had a good program for me and it is a good step before joining the NBA. Pro A is a good competition and it will be interesting to play the Euroleague. I spoke with David (Lighty, himself a former Ohio State ed) the championship group. He told me they took good care of him, the great atmosphere in the team, he had a lot of fun during the season and the city was great. It will be a good challenge for a young player like me to play the Euroleague. My goal this season is going to be to get better and win games. With the Spurs are still in contact, they told me to continue to improve myself and focus on my game. "

Thomas is a pudgy slow shooter who can't defend any NBA position. There is a reason he was available at that point in the draft.

1 game does not make him a bust. He has long odds to make it, but if he gets good at 2-3 legit skills, he may be able to become a fringe nba player.

Scoring/shooting is where he excels at. He needs to make that deadly. Work on becoming a 3/4 combo player defensively.

Never going to be a starter caliber player. But hopefully he can carve out a decent career as a niche bench player.

He's a player who could look pretty good if he's put in good positions to succeed. So long as he's patient in Europe and doesn't force the Spurs' hand, I think they'll give him plenty of years to train and try to develop some NBA-caliber skills.

Spurs fans look at our low draft choices with optimism-- and forget the tremendous odds against players who are in the second round EVER becoming regular NBA contributors. Even the lower picks in Round 1 below 15 are not likely to stick.

Nanterre is playing its first game of the Euroleague season against CSKA Moscow right now. Thomas is coming off the bench.

Thomas checks in with 33 seconds left in the first quarter and promptly hits a three to close the quarter. Nanteree is up 21-11, playing with great energy.

Thomas only played about 5 minutes in the first half but managed to score 7 points. Nanterre have been looking to get him posts up in the mid post area letting him create 1 on 1. He is a bit unlucky to be playing behind Will Daniels who is their top scorer with 16 points so far.

DT scores on a tough shot down low off a broken play and draws a three point play opportunity but can't hit the FT. Nanterre has not looked for him at all this quarter which is kind of strange. The guards are jacking up too many shots.

Really good game offensively for Thomas showing a little bit of everything. Too bad the guards had to shoot that poorly. The upset was definitely possible. Nantere should find more time for Thomas in the rotation. Today, he definitely deserved more than the 15 minutes he got.

There is no NBA position he can defend.

I don't get why we just don't bring this guy back to be the back up SF? All we are looking for is a guy to play 5-10 minutes behind kawhi. and this guy does have an offensive game that is ready to play. he also has good length for defense.

That could still be an option down the line depending on how Nanterre does, if their season ends early like Baynes' team, we could bring him in.

He has length for defense but not the speed.

DT is a wing player who's draft combine jumping and agility numbers were worse than Blair's. He's too short to be a stretch 4, and too slow and plodding to be a 3. I think he has about a 5% chance of ever making our roster. There is just no NBA position he can defend. Offense is only half of the game.

he's 6-7, he has barely the length to guard sf, and not even the best ones . Considering his speed, it's almost impossible to think he'll be an nba player, but he can still work on his athleticism, leg strength and overall pace, if he combines it with a decent defensive iq, he could be an nba rotational player. It takes a lot of effort though. (i obviously don't even consider him as a pf, that's simply impossible no matter how hard the effort)

Tbh I don't know if he can play in the nba, I just like his skillset but I'm not sure. I think having him on the roster would be worth it just for having Kawhi work out with a great scorer who doesn't have the ability to get to the rim, basically the blueprint for him on the offensive end if he's gonna become an allstar.

All I can say about this analysis is Paul Pierce anyone. DeShaun Thomas has much athleticism as Paul Pierce did when he first came into the league. And like Pierce, Thomas is a scorer. I am not saying he is Paul Pierce, but not the most athletic SF have made it in the NBA, especially ones that can shoot the ball as well as Thomas.

Thomas went up against 1st and 2nd year NBA players in the Summer League and more than held his own.

I call bullshit. Pierce wasn't overly athletically gifted, but he's LeBron compared to Thomas. It seems like you didn't read the thread. DT posted WORSE combine agility and quickness numbers than Blair.

There is a reason he was available at 58, and it isn't because every GM missed once, and some twice on a legit American college prospect. He's as immobile as a rock out there.

The guy did fine in the summer league against guys that are currently playing in the NBA. Most here aren't talking about him being a star player, but just a role player to give spot up minutes and hit the open 15ft to 25ft jumpshot.

The video below is pretty much what you saw all Summer League. His jab step back jumper reminded me alot of Paul Pierce. Funny how you mention he was drafted at 58 and pretty much every analyst labeled Thomas as steal of the draft after his summer league performance.

I saw Thomas live in Friday vs. Budivelnik Kiev. 11 points in 16 minutes from the bench. He played as PF, but he don't looks like PF rather more like big SF, and during shootaround he was shooting a lot of threes. In game he made 1/5 3's. Coach did not trust a lot to Thomas. After 2 travel violation in a row Thomas went to the bench immediately.
Finish on the rim was nice with confidence.

I'm not very impressed with his game, tbh. I saw some games from Summer League, he looks great those games. But now I'm not sure he's ready for NBAhttp://cs311321.vk.me/v311321957/495e/J1uvRman0S8.jpg

So far Thomas has launched a ton of 3s. He already has 5 attempts and 2 makes in 9 minutes of play. Leads the team in scoring with 8 points at the half.

Solid 3rd quarter for him. He finally got some looks at the rim and scored all of his 6 points this quarter in the paint. Too bad Nanteree can't get any stops and the guards keep chucking pull up 3s.

Nanterre logically lost against a better team. Thomas had a good game offensively but I'm still amazed by his concrete feet. With as little lateral mobility combined with his limited size, I really don't know how he can make it in the NBA.
