When will you people learn that it is a FACT that the states with the toughest gun control laws have the fewest gun deaths? You can't stop people from being bad or crazy, you can only control what means they have to exercise those "qualities".

http://www.examiner.com/article/exclusive-states-with-toughest-gun-laws-have-triple-the-amount-of-gun-deaths
July 13, 2013
The ten states given the highest ratings by the Brady Campaign for having the most stringent gun control legislation have about triple the amount of gun deaths compared to the ten states that have the least restrictive gun legislation, according to data compiled by the Examiner.
Using data from Slate, who has been tracking gun deaths in America since the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Examiner also found that the Brady Campaign's highest rated state for having the most restrictive gun legislation, California, also had the highest number of gun deaths (677) since the Sandy Hook shooting.
Using Slate's figures, the Examiner tallied the numbers of gun deaths for each state, and compared them to rankings by the Brady Campaign, which gives scores by state for the most versus the least restrictive gun control laws. Notably, their scores do not include legislation passed in the past year. The Brady Campaign used data from the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence to determine state rankings.
The top ten states with the most restrictive gun laws had 2,002 gun deaths, versus the ten states with the least restrictive gun laws, which totaled 696 gun deaths. The state with the fewest restrictions on firearms (and therefore the lowest scored), Utah, has had 29 gun deaths since Sandy Hook.
If the top state for gun deaths, California, is removed entirely from the equation, the total number of gun deaths would fall to 1,325 for the states with the most stringent gun control laws, which is still a significant difference from the tally of 696 gun deaths from the top ten least restrictive gun states.
Slate's tally includes people killed by police, suicide, or criminals killed by their potential victims all in one big category. Famously, one of the people listed on Slate’s piece was Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose name was read as a "gun violence victim" during a gun control rally sponsored by “Mayors Against Illegal Guns."
According to their most recent update (in mid-June), Slate determined that 6,095 people have been killed via firearm since Sandy Hook (and the author of the Slate piece believes the actual figure is higher, as “roughly 60 percent of deaths by gun are due to suicides,” which are rarely reported as news).
Using these sources alone, it seems that if there is any correlation to “gun deaths” and gun control laws, at the very least, it would be that the most stringent gun control legislation does not make gun deaths go down.
The focus on “gun crime” alone encourages trends related to violent crime to be ignored, such as criminal history, gang involvement, mental health history, age, gender, race, socioeconomic factors as well as proximity to urban areas. Indeed, Slate includes gender and age in their study, but dismisses these other factors.
While the figures here do not account for population (obviously, densely populated areas would be much more likely to result in more violent crime), the figures do indicate that there are other trends worth exploring if the real goal is to reduce violent crime.

Well, obviously the two cases are quite different.
The Trayvon Martin case was cold-blooded murder by a white-hispanic racial profiler.
In contrast, this shooting of Chris Lane had to do with global warming and lax gun control laws.

naw the racism was pure and unfiltered. nothing about it was manufactured. the lack of empathy, comments, blogs and interviews exposed the racism. the zimmerman supporters didn't hide their racism or racial stereotypes, one of the biggest being demonizing trayvon into a cold hearted thug that deserved to die. these 3 kids who killed Mr. Lane are actual thugs, not the make believe typical black thug persona created for trayvon.
Oh and another favorite saying was 'they'll stop talking about trayvon days after the verdict' welp, its been over a month and his name is still ringing and the zimmerman supporters keep bringing it up:p:

I certainly don't see the double standard. I think you misinterpreted the whole Trayvon story as some kind of national outcry against white-on-black violence. It wasn't. It was a nuanced story about a man who chased after a "suspicious looking" kid and ended up killing him, then was let off the hook and later found innocent of the charges because Florida state law allows you to shoot someone if you feel threatened. It divided the country, and black America was understandably more sympathetic to the Trayvon side because it was certainly fair to ask what exactly was suspicious about Trayvon Martin that night.
There may have been racism in the Chris Lane murder and the Memphis murder, but everyone pretty much unanimously agrees that these people are murderers and should be punished accordingly. Justice has been served. There's no controversy. Unless you think there is some sort of black-on-white crime epidemic that is being underreported by the national media, leading to a national ignorance of the threat posed by black people.

The ten states given the highest ratings by the Brady Campaign for having the most stringent gun control legislation have about triple the amount of gun deaths compared to the ten states that have the least restrictive gun legislation, according to data compiled by the Examiner.
This isn't entirely accurate either. There seems to be little effect of using the Brady score. It actually has a very close following to the percentage of Latino plus Blacks. Check out these two charts:

Edwards and Chancey Allen Luna, 16, who is also black, were charged with first-degree murder. At the police station, Edwards danced while they were booking him, said Duncan Police Chief Daniel P. Ford. "He thought it was cool," Ford said.
Michael Dewayne Jones, 17, who is white, was charged with lesser counts — accessory to the murder and use of a vehicle in discharge of weapon. According to court documents, Jones was the driver and told police he knew who shot Lane but was worried he'd "get killed" if he snitched.
The three alleged assailants came from what is known as the gritty part of town; a prosecutor called them "thugs." Lane had been visiting his girlfriend's family in Duncan's north end, a prim neighborhood with brick homes and big yards.

The argument is that in reality there is more black on white murders but the media sensationalizes any time it's white on black. Much like how liberals accuse conservatives on sensationalizing Muslim Terrorist.
As far as our drug laws, I'm open to hearing evidence that shows black drug offenders receive unequal punishment to white drug offenders. If that's the case I'm in on trying to fix it, but as far as racial violence it's a real possibility that blacks may be the biggest offenders.

I suspected this to be true. One of my passions is life is to help ex-convicts wipe the slate clean. Carnegie Mellon conducted a study that showed ex-convicts who remained clean for 7 years were no more likely to commit a crime than the general population. Yet, we banish ex-cons to a lifetime of employment discrimination. The inability for ex-cons to redeem themselves disproportionately, and unfairly, affects minorities.
scott
08-24-2013, 11:28 AM
I think what the study seems to overlook is the quality of legal representation available to defendants. My guess (just a guess, not verified) is that caucasian offenders have better legal representation (as a result of them being more likely to have the financial resources available for better legal representation) and thus more favorable sentencing.

If George Zimmerman had been arrested and convicted of murdering Trayvon Martin, like Chris Lane's killers were and will be, there would have been a lot less national media "sensationalism" as you put it. If George Zimmerman had been arrested and convicted of murdering Trayvon Martin, like Chris Lane's killers were and will be, there would have been a lot less national media "sensationalism" as you put it. The controversy stemmed from a good portion of the country feeling that justice was not being served. And media coverage is not justice.

Again, I'm not interested in perception but care most about reality and what the data has to say.
Not all murders are racially motivated. I don't doubt there is more black on white crime in general due to the disparity in economic situations. That being said, I gave you some very prominent examples of clear cut racially motivated (even if systematic) crimes. You're going to have to wait decades after events like this before the perceptions around them fade. I would argue that the reality behind them needs to change first, too. And maybe thats happening and maybe its not. We'll only know further on down the line.

(KMOV) – Police are hoping surveillance video will help catch four suspects after a hot dog vender was robbed and attacked with a stolen hammer at a Ferguson Home Depot on Wednesday.
Authorities said the hot dog vendor was standing at the front entrance of the Home Depot in the 10900 block of New Halls Ferry Rd. around 3 p.m. when four shoplifters walked by and swiped his cell phone.
Police said the vendor chased them out of the store, but was struck in the head with a hammer one of the suspects had stolen. The suspects then got in a car and drove away.
The bloodied victim was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities were looking at surveillance video to help identify the suspects.

You prove my point here. You seem to state that policy and public opinion should be dictated by the isolated killing of 1 black man vs the killing of thousands of innocent people because the offenders in the former were white. You sound like you're justifying the perception of white people caused by Rodney King and Jasper incidents because, well, it only affects white people. IMO nothing can be further from the trust since your political party would not survive without the general belief by latinos, blacks, and guilt ridden whites that there's a war on blacks by whites. That negatively affects everyone, since as you admitted, the public is being swayed more by false perception rather than fact.
