*A movie that's all that deserves a premiere and after party that's all that. Such was the case last night for "Hustle & Flow" which stars Terrence Dashon Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taraji P. Henson, Ludacris, Elise Neal and Paula Jai Parker. "H&F" tells the story of a smalltime Memphis hustler/pimp who's trying to turn his life around and follow his dream of becoming a rapper. (For more see today's Film Strip column.)
The film's premiere was held at the world famous Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Besides cast members Howard, Ludacris, Neal and Parker, the red carpet attracted Will Smith, Chris Rock, Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union, Regina King, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, NBA champion/San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker and his girlfriend actress Eva Longoria, among others. Also on the scene was real-life former pimp Bishop Magic Don Juan and his chalice.
After the screening which played to an enthusiastic overflow crowd, the after party was on and poppin' around the corner at the newly redesigned and jaw dropping Sunset Room. There, party peeps were treated to free drinks ... yep even the top-shelf stuff was flowing and in no time errybody's spirits were flying high. Oh yeah, did we mention that the food was catered by Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. So you know we got our grub on. It doesn't get any better. To cap off the evening, Memphis crunk producer/rapper/writer Al Kapone, who wrote & produced the songs in the movie, did his thing (along with the cast members) for the crowd.
All in all it was an evening that producer John Singleton, Paramount Classics Pictures and publicists Cassandra Butcher & Soni Ede can be proud of. They held it down and then some. "Hustle & Flow" opens tomorrow, Friday, July 22 in theaters throughout North America.
