True shooting percentage is a measure of scoring efficiency that takes into account 2-point field goals, 3-point field goals and free throws. Bryant’s true shooting percentage was .525, the lowest of his career and the second-worst rate among the 14 qualified players averaging at least 20 points.
In fact, since the 1979-80 season, only Allen Iverson (three times) and Jerry Stackhouse (once) have averaged at least 28 points with a lower true shooting percentage.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:11 PM
The major problem for Bryant has been his 3-point shooting. Bryant was averaging five 3-point attempts a game, and his 3-point field-goal percentage was .286.
That figure was the third-lowest 3-point field-goal percentage in the league among qualified players, and would be the third-worst rate in N.B.A. history among players averaging at least four 3-point attempts.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:13 PM
His shooting woes are so problematic to his performances that Bryant's offensive rating this season of 104 points produced per 100 possessions is his lowest since his rookie season and his win shares per 48 minutes (.157) are the fifth-lowest of his 15-year career and his worst mark in that category since the 2004-05 season.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:14 PM
Using Basketball-Reference's win shares per 48 minutes statistic, which is vastly superior to PER since it does not reward production totals over efficiency, finds that Bryant is not even in the top 20, and he only shows up as 17th in win shares (4.7) because of all the minutes he has played this year.

The Lakers just beat the Warriors in overtime, 118-115. Here’s the box score (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278118). Listed as the “top performer” of the game by ESPN is Kobe Bryant, who had a line of 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. Great game, right?
Wrong. Bryant got his 34 points by making 16 out of a whopping 41 shots. With his 41 shots, Bryant shot a grand total of one free throw in the game. Bryant’s shooting percentages are historically average; his value as an offensive player comes from getting to the free throw line early and often. If Bryant doesn’t make his way to the free throw line, he’s not a good player.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:21 PM
After 79 games and with the Lakers on the edge of a playoff berth, holding a one-game lead over Utah for the No. 8 spot in the West with only three left to play, Bryant's teammates don't seem to be content to just feed the "All hail Kobe, the living legend" propaganda machine and ride his coattails into the playoffs.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:21 PM
"It's bittersweet," Pau Gasol (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/996/pau-gasol) said when asked about Bryant's dominating performance against the Blazers, in which he played all 48 minutes in a non-overtime road game for the first time in his career. "Because, I think it's spectacular and it's very impressive and it's remarkable to be able to play 48 minutes and score 47 points. That's incredible. On the other hand, I'm a player that likes to see a little bit more ball movement and better balance. I've always been [like that]. That's just how I perceive this game.
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:23 PM
"[When] Kobe is on the weak side, he needs to start paying attention to where the ball is and not be flying around, thinking he's some stealth bomber where he can get steals nonstop," said Horry.
The Lakers (17-21) have struggled this season as a team to play defense, and Horry put a sizable share of the blame on Bryant.
"That's the only reason you won two games, you solved the problem," continued Horry, speaking of Bryant's move to covering point guards Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks.

To put that number in context, Allen Iverson’s usage rate at his ball-dominating peak was 37.8% (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/iversal01.html). In other words, when the Lakers are in trouble in the fourth quarter, Kobe — a guy whose teammates have included Shaq, Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard and Steve Nash — becomes a bigger ballhog than Allen Iverson was in the era in which the 76ers officially changed the name of their team to “Allen Iverson and Eleven Random Guys Named Bill.”
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:29 PM
“Bryant works in grand scale. He’s not a man prone to subtlety or to easily admitting defeat. And so, a mighty eight times in the final three minutes, the Lakers entrusted their offense to him, flying solo, almost always against Iguodala, with other Lakers in great position to score: Matt Barnes cutting hard to the hoop, Pau Gasol calling for the ball with deep post position solo-covered by a point guard, Derek Fisher alone on the perimeter — and not even getting a look.” –Abbott (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7649571/nba-kobe-bryant-not-money-think-espn-magazine)
Michael Jordan.
08-29-2013, 03:30 PM
They prefer Kobe’s 21.95 Player Efficiency Rating (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics) (17th in the league) to Bynum’s 23 Player Efficiency Rating (10th in the league). Bynum’s number of field goal attempts drop in the fourth quarter, and not because his performance declines. Every team has a limited number of field goal attempts per quarter that must be distributed amongst its players. More shots for Kobe means fewer shots for Bynum. Henry Abbott calls Bynum the “most exasperated player (http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/41901/the-exasperation-of-andrew-bynum)” because Bynum recognizes that his talent is being underutilized and that his team would have better chances of winning if it relied less on hero ball.

Without Kobe, the Lakers are 43-21 (including 0-1 in playoffs), as of Feb 1, 2012.
That includes a game where he played only 1 minute, as well as a game he played 6 minutes (going 1 for 2, scoring 2 pts total)

Take Phil Jackson’s words:
“Kobe’s defense, to be accurate, has faltered in recent years, despite his presence on the league’s all-defensive team. The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense.

Kobe also plays clutch D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRzgjfqWIOI
From 1998-99 to 2000-01, Shaq made the most shots in the league each year despite never ranking in the top three for field goal attempts, and made 57.2 percent or more of his shots. And that shooting percentage isbelow his career average, a 58.2 percent mark that is the NBA's all-time lead. (And those years were also Kobe's best shooting years. Maybe having Shaq around helped?)
And while Bill Simmons will probably tell jokes about Kobe's 6-for-24 clunker against the Celtics in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals until he can no longer tell jokes, Gasol coming up big against the Kendrick Perkins-less C's in the final two games of the series (17 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists in Game 6, which saw Perkins play just over six minutes, and a 19-18 in Game 7) was what helped the Lakers come back from a 3-2 hole, and he was even better in Games 1 (23 and 14) and 2 (25-8 and six blocks). Kobe's best two scoring games that series (38 points in Game 5, and 33 in Game 4) both came in losses.
“Jordan was also more naturally inclined to let the game come to him and not overplay his hand, whereas Kobe tends to force the action, especially when the game isn’t going his way. When his shot is off, Kobe will pound away relentlessly until his luck turns. Michael, on the other hand, would shift his attention to defense or passing or setting screens to help the team win the game.”
-PJ
The first table includes 15 active players who have attempted at least 650 "clutch" shots since the 2000-01 season. Again, for this set, ‘clutch' is defined as "the shots that occur during the 4th quarter or overtime, with less than five minutes remaining, and neither team ahead by more than five points". Playoffs are included.

I love it how you are going out of your way to try and discredit Kobe. No one on this board, including Lakers Fans will say Kobe > MJ overall. Sure, I think there are some things I think Kobe did better, but collectively MJ > Kobe. So when I see 95% of your 1,828 posts is rehashing stuff that we already knew about Kobe, it's kind of meh tbh. I mean, tell us something we don't already know.
But...something that most fans don't know about you is that you are on the wrong end of the 6-:lol Green and White stick. And I'm gonna keep calling you out on it. Matter of fact, I think I'll start calling you "Bird shit!" :rollin :lmao :rollin

Lol no one is going out of their way, son. I simply show facts why Kobe Bean Bryant is simply the most overrated player to ever walk the face of the earth. (Not clutch, doesn't have a great impact on team wins, very average player without a great big) You choose to ignore them which is fine, I would too if I was a Kobe stan. And it is pretty obvious that you are SALTY. You can't beat the ring argument which your faggot fanbase is notorious for. You really can't beat any argument. Which is why you can't come up with anything better than Boston. You're stuck at 5 and ya ain't going nowhere. You're helpless. I don't blame you. Your favorite player is nothing more than just average player whose weaknesses are covered up by dominant post presence. But be mad at your idol for being overrated. Not MJ. Now, let us proceed.

Actually, only Boston can bring up any ring smack, tbqh. Yours all have an asterisk due to Bird taking your cookie - leading you to being 0 for the '80s. :lol
It's funny how because I defend Kobe (a Laker) now he's my idol. That's rich. I've talked shit on him just as much as I've given him props. It's called not being a fair weather fan.
You can overrate Kobe if you wish, and this is the perfect forum to do it, but it is futile. Facts are there is nothing that MJ could do that Kobe wouldn't be able to do playing in your era. Your competition (Reggie Miller, Drexler, Dumars, Thunder Dan, Jeff Hornacek - to name a few) pales in comparison to the Kobe has battled tooth and nail for 17 years. Case in point, LBJ, Wade, Vincanity, Ray Allen - just to name a few, are all better than your competition. Even in his 17th year he was still kicking ass until his Achilles blew out.
It's cool though. Have your fun. The fact is the Lakers franchise helped save the NBA. Everytime MJ put on his jersey, he had a little reminder of Laker greatness in the form of the Logo to remind him that he should pay homage. That goes for Tammy, _irk, and any other star. Remember that son.
:lol at your ring smack, when you didn't win shit against any of the legendary teams. Zilch. Nada. Zerro. The GOAT, owned by Bird. A player Magic waxed twice in the Finals. Yet you are the GOAT? :rolleyes

In 2004-05, Kobe logged 40.7 minutes per game for one of the 40 worst defensive teams in league history, with the Lakers' defense somehow getting 2.4 points worse when he was on the floor. That touched off an eight-year stretch over which Bryant still garnered seven All-Defense selections despite the Lakers being little more than an average defensive team -- and actually playing one point per 100 possessions worse defensively with Bryant in the game.
While not exactly on the same level as Derek Jeter's host of ill-gotten Gold Gloves, Bryant's annual All-Defense recognition seems more and more like a legacy pick with each passing year. Adjusted plus/minus suggests he's no more than an average defender at this stage of his career, and at age 34 his best defensive days are likely in the rearview mirror. Bryant ranks among the NBA's all-time great players, and is still one of its best offensive threats, but his defensive impact has been overstated for years.
Michael Jordan.
09-06-2013, 10:18 AM
Even with all the star power on his team in the last 4 seasons Kobe has only averaged 4.4 assists per game. Kobe does not pass enough, and even when he does he’s not very good at getting open shots for teammates.

This drives home the proof that there truly is not much of a competition in this comparison. Jordan has more titles, but more importantly he demolishes Kobe in Finals MVPs which is a much more telling tale of a great champion. Why? For three of Kobe’s championship titles he wasn’t even the best player on his team. Seriously, it’s like saying Derek Fisher’s five titles (all won as a teammate of Kobe Bryant) are equal to Kobe’s when comparing a player’s legacy.
Michael Jordan.
09-06-2013, 10:22 AM
Then comes the Defensive Player of the Year award differential. Clearly, Jordan was a shut-down defender. And not only do I think that Kobe is an overrated defender, but so does his former coach, Phil Jackson. To quote the 11-time champion Zen Master on Kobe’s All-Defense First Team awards: “The voters have been seduced by his remarkable athleticism and spectacular steals, but he hasn’t played sound, fundamental defense.”

And what about those scoring titles? Kobe is supposed to be the greatest scorer in the league right? For one, two players, one of which has been in the league far shorter than Kobe, have more scoring titles than he does. Yup, Allen Iverson and Kevin Durant both reigned supreme as the NBA’s leading scorer three times each during Kobe’s career. So there could even be a debate if Kobe is the best scorer of his own generation!
Michael Jordan.
09-06-2013, 10:25 AM
One’s performance in playoffs is “clutch” in the sense that it provides a glimpse into whether or not you can get it done in the games that matter most. Jordan’s six Finals MVPs to Kobe’s two only begin to tell the story. If you look at the greatest playoff performances of all time (http://www.basesandbaskets.com/2012/11/greatest-nba-playoff-performances-of.html), Kobe has a grand total of zero in the top 10 compared to Jordan’s three which include the renowned “Flu Game,” as well as the 63 point game and the free throw jumper over Bryon Russell to seal the 1998 NBA Finals win for the Bulls. Not sold? Well, ESPN (http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2012/story/_/id/8068148/nba-playoffs-top-25-performances-ever) only gives Kobe one top-25 playoff performance all time (Jordan’s name appears eight times).
Michael Jordan.
09-06-2013, 10:26 AM
Chasing 23 (http://chasing23.com/michael-jordan-game-winning-shots/) lists every single clutch shot of Jordan’s career, where clutch is defined as “shot attempts made with the intent to either win or tie the game within the final 24 seconds, during which a player’s team is either tied or trails by three or fewer points.” The final verdict Jordan is 9 of 18 in such situations—or an astounding 50 percent. How about Kobe? A similar study (http://chasing23.com/kobe-bryant-vs-lebron-james-game-winning-shots/) finds Kobe with an unimpressive 7 of 27, or 26 percent.
In other words, Jordan is about twice as good as Kobe in last-second shot situations.
Michael Jordan.
09-06-2013, 10:26 AM
Kobe is a great player and deserves to be on the same playing field as some of the greatest of all time, but the reality is that he is significantly inferior to Jordan. Stats, awards, clutch performing, it all points in the same direction: Kobe vs. Jordan may be a comparison, but it is not a very competitive one.
So, Kobe may believe that he has no rivals (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/7640850/los-angeles-lakers-kobe-bryant-says-had-no-rivals-16-year-nba-career) in the today’s game, but if he was playing in Jordan’s era, the great Air Jordan would express similar sentiments regarding Kobe.

With his final missed FGA on Tuesday night against HOU (came with 2:27 left in the 4th quarter), Kobe Bryant missed his 15,296th career field goal attempt and passed John Havlicek for the most field goal attempts missed in NBA history if you combine regular season and postseason numbers.
Michael Jordan.
11-03-2013, 07:23 PM
When you compare his FG% to other elite scorers; both past and present, it’s shocking to see how low is FG% is. Additionally 60% of Bryant’s 50 point games have come against bottom 10 defenses in the league. While Kobe is to be commended for taking advantage against poor teams it’s important to put these 50-point out bursts into perspective when comparing them to other player’s 50-point games.
Michael Jordan.
11-03-2013, 07:23 PM
There are only 13 games in NBA history where someone has scored 50 points or more on sub 50% shooting, Kobe is responsible for 7 of those 13 games.
Michael Jordan.
11-03-2013, 07:24 PM
