View Full Version : Spurs: Stop deflecting.

Lately the site has been spammed with a bunch of deflection threads (ranging from titles like 'what if Kobe was a fucking Spur', to 'Pau Gasol appreciation') started by Spurfan to dog Kobe's legacy. Yet, no one's had the balls to discuss the fact that is 5>4; Kobe over Tim. Not even a "2002 was rigged", or "game 7, '10 was rigged" comeback. You're in the 5-4 hole, and what do you do? Quit? Debate the 5-time NBA World Champion's legitimacy? Or how about, you know, actually thinking ahead: "How am I going to dig out of the one-down hole?" or "Is the 2014 'ship attainable?". For Christ's sake, do something about it.

So, with that being said, here's the direction I'm giving you, Spurfans: http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=37

Post-Shaq Era (2004 to 2007)When Shaq left for the Eastern Conference, LA stumbled considerably, going 121-125 over the next three seasons. When Kobe played, they were 111-111, and without him were 10-14. The Lakers suffered little dropoff without their star guard on the floor, much like during the Shaq Era.

Bynum-Gasol Era (2007 to 2009)Andrew Bynum came into his own during the ’07-08 season and gave LA a double-double center for 35 games. After he was lost for the season, the Grizzlies rather magnanimously sent Pau Gasol westward for a handful of beans. Both big men played a majority of this past season in the frontcourt with the severely underrated Lamar Odom; the trio averaged a spectacular 45 points and 26 rebounds. During these two seasons, the Lakers went 111-32 when either Bynum or Gasol played. Guess what their record was when neither of them appeared. I’ll give you a hint; they were consistently around .500 for the previous nine seasons when it was up to Kobe to win games. Well, they were 11-10.

Michael Jordan.
08-30-2013, 05:30 PM
A player who is truly great can pull his team above .500 without relying on a great frontcourt to bail him out. Bryant has never done this. LeBron James’ Cavaliers have been 211-117 (.643) over the past four years without anything resembling Shaq or the combination of Gasol/Bynum/Odom. Chris Paul’s Hornets have dramatically improved from 18-64 four years ago to 105-59 (.640) during the past two seasons, even with Tyson Chandler’s production falling off the table and David West’s output remaining relatively stagnant. Michael Jordan’s Bulls of the ‘90s had no real center to speak of, but he did quite well paired with Scottie Pippen’s production (22 and 7 from 1991 to 1998), which is slightly better than Odom’s (15 and 10 from 2004 to 2009).

Kirby was carried by Shaq, Pau, Phil, Bynum, Odom, Horry, Fisher, Stern, and the refs?

Correct....

No, it's because MJ knows that Kobe will never surpass him while he's worried that LeBron could legitimately retire with an argument for GOAT
Quite plausible tbh. However, Mike Miller and Ray Allen saved his ass two years in a row...

What I'll admit is millions of fans underrate Pip and give you all the props. Fact is, only thing you did better was score better than Pip. Pip was your best defender - bar none, best passer (although Kukoc came close), and arguably one of your team's best rebounders. He, more so than you, took out the opposing team's best perimeter player. He could guard 1-3s with ease and some 4s in a pinch. He was the reason you were able to put up numbers. Many of your points came thru Pip's assists.

Bottom line, Pip was the greatest defender I've ever seen. Great all around player too. He should get more props than he does around these parts.

if kobe wasn't allowed to play sidekick he'd be on his drive for 3, tbh. or if you look at it another way, if tim had the luxury of playing sidekick before taking over the reigns, and was able to coattail for 3 rings, he'd have 7 rings :lol

Spurs are relevant and favorites to make it back to the NBA Finals in the West. The Lakers are favorites to miss the playoffs. End of story :lmao

Well we're heading somewhere. Can you do something about the 5-4 hole, though?
