Not that he's replaceable, but that Brees contract is looking sorta burdensome
This isn't about Brees contract. His cap number isn't that high this upcoming season. They're just getting rid of older players who aren't productive as they were in years past and are trying to get younger. This actually may have more to do with Graham, but they're also trying to shore up other positions like the secondary and the o-line. Everyone they've cut so far didn't make much of an impact last season.

The New Orleans Saints have restructured cornerback Keenan Lewis' contract, according to a source, as the team is near the salary cap ceiling of $133 million for the 2014 season.
The Saints shifted some money around for Lewis to give them $1.2 million in salary cap savings in 2014 and $1 million in savings for 2015. The team turned $2.1 million into bonus money in 2014 to spread the cap hit.
Lewis' base salary dropped to $1 million in 2014 (originally $3.3 million) and $1.8 million in 2015 (originally $4.1 million). Lewis' cap numbers in 2016 and 2017 will hold an increase of $1.1 million in each season because of the restructuring.
Lewis didn't take a paycut with the restructuring.
The Saints now hold $3,089,212 in cap space, according to the NFLPA. This includes new contracts for wide receiver Joe Morgan and linebacker Ramon Humber, along with the extension to running back Pierre Thomas.

As the Saints and tight end Jimmy Graham (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/5842/jimmy-graham) continue to not have a long-term deal in place, the question becomes when the next real deadline applies for either side.
The next real deadline applies on or about April 22, when Graham must file a grievance regarding his designation as a tight end for franchise tag purposes.
Per a league source, the current expectation is that the Saints and Graham will finalize a long-term contract before Graham pulls the pin on a grievance grenade.
Once Graham files a grievance, the process will take on a life of its own, with more than $5 million turning on whether Graham lined up more as a receiver or a tight end for franchise tag purposes. At that point, Graham has nothing to lose by letting it ride — especially once the process becomes adversarial in an industry where the bright line of winning and losing looms over everything else.
Graham can make a strong case for consideration as a receiver for tag purposes. The Saints can make a compelling case, too, but they surely have no desire to draw battle lines with one of their best players. That’s why it makes plenty of sense to resolve the situation before it can take a potentially ugly turn.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/24/graham-deal-likely-before-april-22-grievance-deadline/
Good to see it won't drag on into the summer like it did with Brees.

Loomis: Saints' offseason going as planned
April, 14, 2014 Apr 14
8:00AM ET
By Mike Triplett (http://search.espn.go.com/mike-triplett/) | ESPN.com
From the outside looking in, the New Orleans Saints’ offseason has probably seemed a bit hectic.
The Saints have been full of surprises, from the big-name acquisitions of Jairus Byrd (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12613/jairus-byrd) and Champ Bailey (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/1758/champ-bailey) to the big-name departures of Darren Sproles (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8544/darren-sproles) and others.
http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2014/0310/nfl_u_mloomts_300x200.jpg (http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2014/0310/nfl_u_mloomts_600x400.jpg)
Based on reactions from fans and national analysts alike, the biggest head-scratcher of all has been the fact that the Saints keep adding ammo to the roster despite a tight squeeze against the salary cap.
But none of these moves have been made on the fly.
General manager Mickey Loomis insisted last week that just about every move the Saints made was part of a calculated plan.
“It’s not a process where all of a sudden there’s somebody [available] and you decide, ‘Hey, let’s go do this,’” Loomis said while speaking with reporters at LSU’s pro day.
“We have a short-term plan and a long-term plan,” Loomis continued. “And we come into each offseason with 19 or 20 or 25 different things that we want to get accomplished. And you just kind of go down the checklist. And obviously things come up that are unexpected, and you have to react to those. But for the most part, it’s a plan and an execution of the plan.
“So I would say it was kind of business as usual.”
Asked how many of those items the Saints have hit, Loomis said, “We’ve hit a lot of them. We always do. We don’t hit every item, but we hit almost all of them.”
(Click here for a recap (http://espn.go.com/blog/new-orleans-saints/post/_/id/6095/recapping-saints-dizzying-offseason) of all the Saints' moves as of the beginning of last week.)
The Saints are actually in great shape with the salary cap after agreeing to a pay cut with defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/9600/brodrick-bunkley) last week. They’re now $3.6 million under the cap, and they probably don’t have too many more expensive purchases left in their shopping cart.
New Orleans still has some noteworthy tasks left to complete. The biggest is signing tight end Jimmy Graham (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13232/jimmy-graham) to a long-term contract extension, but Loomis insisted that there is no immediate pressure to get that done. Graham's franchise tag figure is already counting $7.035 million against the Saints' salary cap, so they don't need to clear out any new cap space for him.
The Saints also need to find a new starting center after letting Brian de la Puente (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/11692/brian-de-la-puente) get away in free agency, though they like second-year pro Tim Lelito (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16146/tim-lelito)’s potential as a candidate for that role.
And there are a few other positions where New Orleans needs to get younger, including receiver, but most of those needs can be filled through the draft.
As Loomis suggested, we won’t know until the fall whether the Saints’ plan worked out. But so far, at least, everything is going as planned.
“I feel like we’ve executed our plan well,” Loomis said. “Whether that’s a good plan or not remains to be seen. But we feel like it is.”

No doubt he became shit in his latter years, but he did lead the team to their first ever playoff win and was pretty good before he tore his rotator cuff in 2002. He was never the same after that since he lost velocity from that cannon arm he had.
He led a great comeback in 2000 at San Fran. He was unreal that game throwing and running around. I thought he was the future after that season, but he never really progressed and got worse quickly after that shoulder injury.
He's arguably the second best QB in team history.
