Just got home from the game. Great win that hopefully will set the tone for the season.
A few thoughts:
I'm done with Mark Ingram and I think it's time that the Saints admit that he is a bust. He was supposed to be "healthy, motivated, and revamped" this season. Bullshit, he is still horrible and every time he was given the ball it was like throwing the down away.
Too many FG's and not enough TD's by the offense. That was the only reason the Saints didn't win more comfortably. I'm really not worried about that though. The offense will be fine.
The decision by Sean Payton to go for it on 4th and inches in the first quarter of the game was dumb, and the play call we even dumber. When you need 6 inches or less, sneak the damn ball. Don't call a running play that starts 5 yards behind the line of scrimmage. It's hard to question Sean Payton though. He moved to 12-3 against the Falcons. Props to the D though for holding the Falcons to a FG on that possession.
That was the best pass rush I've seen from a Saints D since the Super Bowl season. Still need to stop giving up the big plays, but the fact that they held the Falcons to 17 points is good.
lol Matt Ryan and lol the horrible Falcons fans that made the trip. They are by far the least intelligent and worst fans in all of the NFL.
I just saw that everyone else in the division lost. So the Saints are alone in 1st place. Happiness ensues!

I'm glad he redeemed himself. Props to the D for giving him a chance. It doesn't matter how you win a road division game in the rain, just get the W and get home.
Ingram remains garbage.
BRHornet45
09-15-2013, 07:55 PM
that's all that matters. dude completed 75% of his passes last week against the Falcons. so what if he had an off game today on the road? shit happens.
what matters is that in clutch time he delivered like he always does.
mad props to Rob Ryan though. this defense is getting better and better.

Keenan Lewis has been our best and most consistent cover corner all year. He got burned once or twice early in the season, but after that he has been great. Also, our safties Jenkins and Vaccaro have been great this year. But now we are short 1 really good second CB.

Same with Eric Reid on the 49ers--that has to be concerning for any fans of the Saints and 49ers...or, for any football fan with the way they are concerning themselves with the concussion and CTE issue.

The offense worried me tonight because I wasn't sure if the o-line could handle their front. But they were great and the WRs got open. Also impressed with the secondary tonight. They helped the front four with some of those sacks.

No doubt, next week is definitely the season and should be treated as such. It's pretty much a playoff game. Win, and we clinch the division, the #2 seed, and a 1st round bye. Lose, and we will likely be one and done in the playoffs.
Also, it would mean being able to rest the starters in week 17.

His play-calling was even worse today in the first 3 quarters. Saints ran the ball easily down their throats and he didn't call enough running plays and let Brees struggle with his decision-making and behind poor blocking. This loss is on Payton.

sons here is the bottom line. the Saints are still going to finish the season 11-5. the ending to the season has certainly been disappointing, but shit happens. look at the Ravens last year who lost 4 out of their final 5 regular season games, the pathetic regular season Giants who finished their season 9-7 and went on the win it all, etc.. the playoffs are what matters.
I have absolutely no idea why the Saints who have been one of the best NFL road teams in years past are such shit this season on the road. they outplayed both New England and Carolina on the road this year and lost both games the exact same way with pitiful play calling and time management in the final minutes of each game. this year is far from done however and the playoffs are right around the corner.

They weren't that great on the road in 2011 either even though they finished 5-3, but those wins were against crappy teams like Carolina, Jacksonville, and Minnesota and a very close win against a solid 9-7 Tennessee, and an OT win at Atlanta which was the turning point of that season. But all of those wins outside of the Minny came were very close and Minny was just an awful team that season starting a rookie Christian Ponder.
The problems this season on the road is mostly on the offense. They're not consistent whether its Brees, the pass-blocking or Payton's play-calling. The last two weeks and the Jets game were mostly due to bad play-calling by Payton. He gets too cute at times instead of keeping it simple. Today was another example where Ingram was dominating on the ground and only got 13 carries even though the pass-blocking was bad and Brees decision making was awful. His two careless interceptions cost the team 10 points. But the play-calling is on Payton as well. He knows the o-line isn't good yet he doesn't try to take pressure off of them by running the football. The only road game where the offense played well was at Chicago. Even with the late collapses at New England and Carolina, the defense has been solid to good on the road with the exception of at Seattle and the run defense at the Jets.
I think the Saints can win some road games in the playoffs, but they're easily capable of being one and done. And honestly, it wouldn't surprise if they pulled a choke job against Tampa next week. That would be a devastating loss, but this loss was devastating as well.

son regardless they had put up the second best road record in the NFL over the last 5-6 years before this year. a win is a win. plus no team actually plays better on the road than they do at home (consistently). I mean hell look at this season for other examples of good teams not playing well on the road as well. the Saints are not alone ...
Bengals: 3-5 on the road (10-5 overall)
Patriots: 4-4 on the road (11-4 overall)
last year's Super Bowl winners are 2-5 on the road, etc.

well sons another regular season is in the books. we had our ups, we had our downs, but overall a damn good year. from the Goodell Agenda 7-9 season last year, to 11-5 this year. I'll take it.
the offense was solid, the defense has drastically improved, and we put 5 players into the Pro Bowl. Brees broke more records as usual and had his fourth 5,000 passing yard season (to put that into perspective only 8 times has a player reached 5,000 yards and Brees has half of them). Jimmy Graham stunted his ass off most of the year as well leading tight ends in receiving yards, receptions, and leading the entire NFL in touchdowns.
depending on the outcome tonight it looks like we'll be playing either Dallas of Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs.

It was encouraging to see Dallas able to put pressure on Foles all night. Our front 4 should be able to get to him rather easily.

We're gonna have a hard time stopping McCoy while Philly spreads out the defense. Our LBs aren't particularly great. The front 4 will need to bring pressure because the secondary is decimated. I expect Harper to get beat for a couple of TDs.
The key will be Brees and the offense moving the ball down the field, controlling the clock and scoring points. No excuse not to score points this game. Need to run the ball early and often since the o-line doesn't show up on the road. I think the team needs to rush close to 150 yards to win easily. Anything less will make it close.

Funny thing is there have been 4 different QBs during those 5 games. McNabb was in two of them, Garcia was in the playoff game, Kolb started in the 2009 blowout, and Vick last season.

Easy win. Total yards were 434-256 in favor of the Saints. That's total domination.
The only reason that the score was close was because of 2 early turnovers and the Keenan Lewis injury. And we had to overcome Avante, which was definitely the toughest hurdle.
If we can rush the ball like we did tonight, and if Lewis can play, we have a shot in Seattle.

It was 4th overall, but not what we saw in 2009 and 2011. Big reason was the o-line play. They will get better. Sure up the o-line and secondary and this team will be hard to beat next season.

the offensive line is about the only thing that needs to be fixed on the offense. I know many are quick to bash Ingram (myself included at times), but the offensive line was atrocious for most of this season. Ingram had a terrible and game changing fumble today that may cost him his job. however he had shit to work with for most of the season. I'm fine either way with whatever they decide to do with him.
I think we lose Lance Moore as well. he is due $3.8M next season and he didn't produce much this season. I know he was hurt a good chunk of the year and did deliver a few good catches towards the end of the season, but depending on how the money gets spread around to improve the line I'm not sure they will be willing to spend $3.8M on a 31 year old receiver.

I agree about Moore. He's replaceable.
Ingram was a bust overall but he played really well in the 2nd half of the season. He's not as versatile as Pierre, but he's a better rusher at this point.

well Ingram only cost $712,000 this year. not sure what his contract calls for next season, but it can't be much more than that if he is still in his rookie contract.
like I said though ... I could careless what they do with him. it wasn't always his fault when the running game sucked when you consider the shitty offensive line, but he also didn't do enough this season for me to argue for him.

I have never seen Sean Payton get so conservative with his play calling as he did this season. his conservative play calling pretty much single handily lost both the New England and Carolina games. both of those losses were on Sean in my opinion. that turns what should have been a 13-3 season and locking up the division and home field advantage into an 11-5 season fighting on the road.

I feel like this was another wasted season just like 2011. This team was good enough to make a Super Bowl run with an elite QB and a top 5 defense. However choke losses at New England and Carolina and bad road losses to the Rams and Jets cost them homefield. This team could beat anyone on a neutral field. Even today at Seattle they out gained the Seahawks 409 to 277 in yards. Had 25 first downs compared to their 13. They sacked Wilson 3 times and held them to barely over a 100 yards passing. Yet they got in the Seahawks 30 three times without any points and didn't run the ball enough when needed.

Agreed. Payton relied too heavily on the defense at the end of those games instead of stepping on the team's throats when he should have. I'm still not sure if we would have been able to go to Seattle and win in the NFC Championship game even if we had gone 13-3 and gotten the bye and a home game.
This Saints team just didn't play good enough on the road this season, plain and simple. We only averaged 19 ppg on the road.

We couldn't afford to fall behind 16-0. But even though we did, if Graham makes his 2 FGs, we are only down 2 points at the end instead of 8, Colston steps out of bounds there and we kick the game winning FG. Definitely frustrating.

I think the future is bright though because of our talented defense moving forward.
Today was a winnable game. They moved the ball well throughout but couldn't score points. Defense was strong overall, the offense ran the ball well, but they got mistakes were costly throughout that cost them points.
Bad punt and Bush's penalty give the Seahawks 3 points.
Missed FG leads to another FG for the Hawks where they only drove 34 yards.
Ingram fumble sets up a touchdown.
Disasterous series after Meachem bomb ends with zero points.

Yeah the Rams were a lot better than their record. But the way the Saints lost was terrible. Turnovers, missed FGs, poor tackling. Ugly performance. Same with the Jets game. Just terrible overall. And then choking away games at New England and Carolina. Frustrating.
I dont feel feel bad about both losses at Seattle, though today was frustrating since it ended the season.

We couldn't afford to fall behind 16-0. But even though we did, if Graham makes his 2 FGs, we are only down 2 points at the end instead of 8, Colston steps out of bounds there and we kick the game winning FG. Definitely frustrating.
I didn't expect t him to make the 2nd FG since the weather was crazy at the point, but the first FG miss hurt since it would have made the game tied at 3. Still they series was ended with questionable play-calling. After running the ball well to get inside the Hawks 30, the line was stacked on 1st and 10 so why not do play-action? Also, screens never worked yet they kept calling it all game. And in the end, 43 pass plays to 25 runs wasn't gonna get it down against that defense. The game wasn't a blowout. They had enough time to stick with the running game.

Seattle still has a lot to prove though. they need to prove that they can win big games outside of that stadium of theirs. they more than likely will be in the Super Bowl this year and I can tell you one thing .... that gimmick QB of theirs is going to have to do more than 9 of 18 and 103 yards.

The end of the season is hard any way you slice it, unless you're at the bottom of the barrel, and were throttled all season long. The Rams have a way of making you look pretty bad once the pass rush gets going. We know 1st hand. And, if we ended the season on the road in the dome, I probably would share the same sentiment. I don't think anything will ever hurt as badly as that 2011 49ers game. Gregg William gave that game away and we were a shoe-in to make the Super Bowl as we would have hosted a Giants team in the dome that we absolutely crushed a few weeks before. My primary concern is San Frans ability to run the ball. They have the weapons on the outside as well, and any mistake could just end the game against that defense. I'll be more sure of our odds if Percy passes protocol. You guys could have just changed things even if you're out of the tournament from here on out.

But Kaep sucks in the pocket regardless of who he throws to. Your guys will lock up their guys force Kaep to make some tough throws. Gore may get his, but it's easier to cheat the run against Kaep compared to Brees. Kaep has been terrible against good defenses. Well both games the Saints dominated and crushed the Panthers in the Dome while barely losing at Carolina. The Saints ran the ball well today, but also have a bigger advantage in the passing game. Panthers won't be able to pass the ball regardless of how well they run it. Saints ran well over 100 yards today and have a bigger threat in the passing game.

cam newton is hot and cold and i agree it would be tough for him to play well against Seattle... but it's not impossible and he can easily run circles around their D. you out of all people should not question newton's clutch ability. he is not as bad as you are making him out to be.

Whats the difference between limiting and asking how they will score? How will they score? Seattle is fast enough defensively to keep Cam in the pocket and he won't have any open receivers. How will he score?
Saints are more of a complete team than the Panthers. There's a reason why the Saints crushed the Panthers at home and barely lost on the road despite dominating in yardage and time of possession. It was just a choke job with blown coverages that cost the Saints the game. The Saints are more dangerous since they have a strong defense and play makers on offense.

You should be more confident. Your team popped them in the mouth earlier at their place and now they gotta come to your house. Their QB will struggle tomorrow. I like the idea of a QB getting 15 million per. Preferably 12 million. I'd really like if the QB's salary (If he is a good QB) was no greater than 13% of what the team will spend. So, I think we spent about 124 million this season. Going forward, I would prefer Wilson's contract to be between 12.5 and 16.12 million based on that 124 million dollar number once he's due. Although I have to be completely honest, I'd rather not spend over 15 million. The difference between 15 and 17 million can easily be 4 players, any one of which that could have a major impact on your team.
I think the current per year contract Brady is on is reasonable, and should be the model. Although, I'm not sure what kind of bonus he received, and what effect that had on the cap of N.E.

He'll probably file a grievance to get the WR money. The tags are based on where you play on the field, not what the team calls you. So if he can prove he took more snaps split out and/or in the slot than he did at TE, he'll have a strong case to get the full $13.2 Million.

^ I can't imagine much value for Thomas or Moore at this point in their career.
I don't want to lose Sproles though. When he and Graham are both in the game together, our offense just seems to thrive.

Sproles wasn't that great in the second half of the season. He's 31, not nearly as explosive as two years ago, terrible in the return game and cost around 5 million next season. He struggled in the second half of the season with his knee injury. I don't trust him as much as I use to.

This kind of move shows why this organization has been one of the most consistent since 2006. This wasn't an easy decision but the team had to do what they felt was best. I doubt Sproles will come back cheaper and if he can stay healthy, he's still a weapon. Time will tell if he can come back to his 2011 form. I already miss him.

Not that he's replaceable, but that Brees contract is looking sorta burdensome

Because if the larger than expected raise in the salary cap his contract doesn't have as much to do with it as you would think..they just didnt wanna pay what they were owed or at the level they were owed
