Maggette was an exciting prospect back in 2008 or whenever it was the Spurs took a run at him. But this is a move that is 5 years too late. He's lost a step and is pushing 35.
For the minimum, I guess he wouldn't be the worst option for a backup SF or insurance policy ala T-Mac.

He could continue in T-Mac's footsteps working with Kawhi on ways to attack the basket. Though he may have lost a step, himself, he was scoring 15 with Charlotte a few years ago and I don't think he's anywhere near the crip that McGrady is (he was benched the entire season so it's kind of like he's pushing 34). :lol

Have you lost your mind?
Things are NOT JUST black or white as you would have us believe, there is a hell of a lot more gray area in life!
Thus if you believe in something Pop says, but not all of what he says, that does not make you a "Popsucker" or any other stupid derogatory name.
It just means you agree.
And all the rest that you happen to disagree with Pop on, you will just have to agree that you both disagree.
It isn't any more complicated than that, nor is it absolutist!
Got it now?
Somehow I think and sense there is a shred of common sense inside you somewhere, otherwise I wouldn't keep trying to get through to you.

I would be surprised if the Spurs didn't give Maggette a camp invite. They pursued him pretty hard about 4-5 years ago when he was a free agent and decided to sign with GS at the time.

I like this move better than the Sam Young move. At least Maggette can get to the free throw line and will not be a complete liability of offense. The Spurs offense is as fluid as it is because everyone on the floor can either penetrate or shoot the ball or play well in the pick n roll.

How can they have 16 players signed when they are only allowed 15?
Clearly one of these guaranteed contracts will have to be moved.
This strengthens my contention that Young was signed to use as trade filler.

Young's contract is not guaranteed.
Nearly every team in the NBA has more than 15 players under contract right now. Training camp invitees are signed to contracts. Nearly all of them have little or no guaranteed money.
Young will be trying to earn a spot on the roster.

I saw him play on TV that charity game yesterday with TP and he looked in decent shape. Now, I can't say more because it was a very low intensity game.
If Maggette can get back at the level he was a couple of years ago, he would be a very nice bench player. His good rebounding would especially be welcomed in small ball situation. That's a big if, but you never know...

Obviously, the Spurs will have to make a choice. Do they want a player who can hold the fort defensively (Young) or do they want a player who can generate offense, but can't play a lick of defense (maggette). Corey's also only played 50 games over the last 2 seasons. At 33, his body may be breaking down. He's not very good at knocking down three's either.

Or he is probably fresh considering he didn't get a lot of run on teams that were lottery bound and were looking to develop younger players. And Maggette has barely played in the playoffs so he shouldn't have a lot of wear and tear. Also he is a good guy who would take a small role and playing for a contender could motivate him even more. I know in Detroit he was talking with their management about a future role so obviously he has a good head on his shoulders and seems to be in great physical shape. If given the opportunity to play 15 minutes a game I am confident he will contribute. I like Young on defense, but just watching him in the playoffs for Indy last season he is a liability on offense.

Intriguing as well. Let's wait and see if he can still delivers like how he played before. If he could regain his shooting and low-post scoring, he's not a bad option like MWP-ish type of offense though his defense is questionable. He could be nice in small ball.

Disliking Maggette on the basis that he's been somewhat overrated/overpaid is perfectly reasonable. By ramp, he's hovered around -2 for the last 4 years. That's not good. It's also not worthless.
Replacement level is normally-3/-3.5, so a -2 player has some value. Gary Neal has been a -3.5 or so player throughout his career, and Gary Neal is not completely useless. Maggette is OK for the minimum.

Although I really want defensive minded wing players that can also shoot the three and get to the rim, I guess you can't be too choosey with that 15 roster spot ;), I'm still very intrigued by Maggette. I really like that he is someone that can get to the free throw line on the offensive end. That's something we need more of too, someone that can draw fouls and get to the free throw line, so I like that aspect of his game. To make the team though, he's going to have to put a lot more effort in on the defensive end and show that he wants that spot.
Also, wasn't Chip Engellend his shooting coach at one point when he played for the Clippers?

He may be the last player signed, hence, the 15th roster spot, but he won't be getting 15th roster spot minutes. He'll get more minutes than Mills, Baynes and De Crapo and will most likely be a fixture in the rotation by mid season.

the area in KL's game that has the most room for improvement is likely initiating contact and getting to the line.
few players in the last decade have been better than Maggette in doing that.
so, even if Maggette is only here for camp, he might be able to provide a crucial step in Kawhi's development to an all star player.
btw. I didn't know he was so close with Tony. some years ago there were reports that he is best friend with Kobe. if he is in fact a great locker room guy and mentor, it doesn't hurt, even if the Spurs don't exactly lack quality locker room presence. you can't have to much good mood during camp, much like you can't have to much depth.
so or so, like I said in the other thread, I see Nando as the odd man out. even if neither Maggette or Young stay. the ball handling department got slightly stronger with Beli, this will cost Nando some minutes, the assumed improvement of Joseph takes some more. I also don't see much future for Nando with the Spurs. Nando's future is Europe, where he still can build a nice career. (and make more money in the long run).
predicition: if Nando get's an offer he likes in Europe, he will ask the Spurs for a buy out. Nando will just take care to not lose money during that process.

I suspect he has virtually no chance to make the team and that this is born out of (minor) curiosity, but mostly courtesy, because they've liked him for a long time and he's long been regarded as a high character type.
As far as him potentially becoming a part of the front office, I'm pretty sure they've yet to name a replacement for Marks, who ran the Toros last year. Who knows if they think he'd be ready for that though.
