I would say he is in quite decent shape:

Speaking of Sam Young, if you wanted to know what type of shape he is in:

Hmm, does this signal a trade of some of the Spurs' other bench players?

I can't see them committing to 15 roster spots this early.

I'm not surprised at all. Could be another Jim Boylen connection.

Most likely just a training camp roster invite.

No, his contract is likely mostly non-guaranteed and he will fight with other players for that 15th spot during training camp.

Decent pickup, should be a serviceable backup behind Kawhi for 10-15 minutes a night. Could've done worse

Yeah I'm thinking this too. I'm intrigued by the signing. At least the Spurs have a backup SF for now, though Young wouldn't be my first choice.

Imagine if Blair was still on the team. Pitt reunion.

Now, if he makes the team we can see him throw DeJuan's shot attempts in the stands as a Spur. That was some of the most embarrassing aspects of that loss to Memphis in '11.

Was hoping for a backup 3 with more perimeter scoring and size, but with the slim options available Sam Young is likely their best choice. They could still find some other players that may beat Sam out for the final roster spot. He'll need to play well in camp and during the pre-season.

What's the point of signing a guy to non-guaranteed contract just to fight with other camp invitees for the 15th roster spot? They should have just invited him to camp like all the rest.

I knew they wouldn't go after a player like Peitrus. RC is all about lightning in the bottle and fly pigs rather than proven talent.

I like it. Not a very flashy signing, but I've liked Young ever since he killed us in that Memphis series.

He is also coming from a system that is structured similarly to the Spurs, and has the connection with Boylen and Pendergraph/Ayers.

Pretty damn good for a 15th spot, considering that spot is usually saved for the Malik Hairstons and James White!s of the league.

All they really need with this last spot is a good SF defender who can hit open 3s. Not sure if Young is that. I remember seeing him in flashes at Memphis and Indiana. Didn't make an impression on me.

His jump shot % have fluctuated but I think Chip can work with his form, similar to what he did with Kawhi. (His hands are too close together, he needs to move his off hand more to the side of the ball).

I'm wondering if hitting 3-pointers is actually a priority for the Spurs, considering that it's the 15th spot, who will not receive much playing time. I'm thinking that the Spurs are valuing his defense more than his ability to learn to make perimeter shots.

+1. I was thinking the same thing. I LOVE this signing. He is a pretty damn good option to back up Kawhi for 10-15 mins a night. I've always loved his toughness and energy he brings on defense. Another big reason I like the move is because the guy has been in big time playoff games being with the Grizzlies and Pacers. Good stuff by R.C and company...:tu

Signing Young or not doesn't change the fact they'll still have 4 PG's, none of which can play SF. The fact that both Mills and De Colo are still here makes it more likely they won't be traded anytime soon.

It's not an issue of having 4 PGs. It's an issue of having 15 players.

Signing Young takes them to the maximum roster size, which makes future moves move difficult. The Spurs are not known for committing to 15 players this early in the season, so if Young gets kept, I'm anticipating a move to free up one more spot.

Mills/De Colo might be kept if the Spurs don't take on more players. If they do, all bets are off.

this was by far the best option that was left. I do like it!
Young is tough, strong, physical and a pro. he gives the Spur's roster a nice balance regarding their defensive needs.
at 28 Young isn't a spring chicken any more. but Bruce was already 30, when he joined the Spurs. if Young can develop his corner shot a bit, he might even have a long term future with the Spurs, considering the Spurs have a long term solution for the starter SF in Kawhi and will only need a relieable back up, who is happy with some 10-15 MPG.

I'm surprised dude hasn't got a guaranteed offer by some team. Hope he plays well and sticks with the Spurs.

He'd provide a great defensive option off the bench and allow them to mix and match depending on the opponent : CoJo-Manu-Young would be great defensively and allow Manu to spare his energy for offense. Belinelli-Manu-Young would be very good offensively without sacrificing too much on defense. Doesn't bode well for Patty and Nando, though.

TBH, Sam Young pissed me off every time he came in to the game (exactly the way I felt whenever Manu came in) for the Pacers against the Heat because his offense was so terrible. I'm ok with the signing though. If he can develop a consistent spot up three point shot under Chipp Engelland then he might be another underrated signing.

Sam Young's numbers aren't that great. They are typical srcub numbers although he did have a couple of decent years in college. I hope this move pans out. He really needs a consistent jump shot and better court vision. Since players have the habit of playing their best years while wearing a Spurs jersey, lets hope the same can be said of this dude.

What kind of defense can Young play. I'm not going to sugarcoat this, but I thought that this guy was a straight up scrub that had one good series against a banged up and depleted Spurs team. I'm willing to give him a chance if he can play decent defense and is willing to put in the work to improve on offense.

I don't think there has been a single wing who got significant playing time with Spurs this last decade without being able to hit a 3 pointer. Now, it's sure that if he doesn't play, it won't matter what he can or can't do.

Another thing to consider....Young is only 27. He's only been in the league 4 years. There are plenty of players that don't really catch on until that point of their career, whether it is due to physical reasons, mental reasons, environmental reasons, or some combination thereof. He's definitely shown flashes of talent, but obviously not consistently enough. There is always that chance that the Spurs system and organization will provide the right chemistry for Young to bloom as a player and take on a bigger role.

Then again, there is also the chance that he doesn't make it past training camp, warms the bench, or is delegated to garbage cleanup.

i don't care that the 15th spot is full. beli, young, jeff fill in where the bench has question marks. mills and bonner fill in for a shooting slump. if a good waiver opens up or somebody stands out in preseason... the spurs can move bonner or mills for a magic bean. i love the depth on this years roster! i think these spurs can finish the job against miami. but i wouldn't be surprised to see indiana, brooklyn, or chicago.

Hard to believe Sam Young is the same age Richard Jefferson was when Spurs first acquired him (28),

Anyways, I was skeptical at first but now I like this signing. Leonard and Young should be a scary duo, assuming Leonard develops into a legit offensive player this season.

He'll be in the rotation. Ginobili isn't exactly playing tons of minutes anymore, just half a game's worth. Kawhi also plays some time at PF when we go small. One is not a hater if he reasonably doesn't expect a role player he's watched all year last year, isn't going to make a major impact this year. You guys throw that term around way too loosely.

Bonner actually did pretty well as a spot or situational player. That is probably what he should have been all along, but the Spurs had to play him more than they should have because they didn't have the right personnel.

So tbh, I think Manu will take some PG time, Leonard will take some PF time like they always have even though you probably don't think of them as PF and PG players, and there's where your extra minutes come from. After all, we don't exactly have a real backup to Parker and our "real" big man rotation only consists of three guys (Duncan, Splitter, Diaw) and some patchwork dudes (Bonner, Baynes). I like it too, and if they keep both Maggette and Young then small ball becomes a decent option as well. I agree with you on the variability of the players, the Spurs IMHO have one of the most flexible teams in the league allowing Pop to experiment depending on match ups and especially to sustitute when someone is having an off night or injured.
I also hope for good things out of Beli as well as an improvement from Manu.
But if they opt to keep both SFs then they will have to get rid obf someone as you well know, most probably one of their guards. I like Mills but with Brown at Philly it seems like the Spur thing to do to send him there although they don't need any PGs.
Don't forget, the Spurs also like to keep a spot open throughout the season to keep some flexibility in order to snag someone they might like or try out on 10 day contracts.

Yeah, I'm a lot happier with the team now that we've added these two guys than I was after the initial free agent signings were over. I still kinda don't like how we didn't add another playmaker, but maybe one of our PGs can step up. Joseph maybe?

Not 100% on who they'd get rid of if they kept both guys. I guess in all likelihood they won't keep both. . .but I would rather do without one of the PGs than not have Young and Magette (assuming they're cheap and ready to go). I would like to keep Mills though, I think he has potential. At worst he's a good shooter who's pretty quick. At best he might end up as a JJ Barea-esque "lightning in a bottle" type guy who goes from "eh" to savior because he got hot at the right time.

Kk, the more I read about Kabongo, the more I like him. You should check him out if you get the chance.
And to tell you the truth, I am not really sold on Young or Maggette, they both have too many downsides.
The Spurs may decide not to sign either and see who is available before the season starts or during the season before the trade deadline.

I've bought it up before, but no ones seems to listen or didn't bother reading it. Someone (don't recall who it was) said a few weeks ago said that both Tim and Tony asked the Spurs front office to keep Mills around for longer than this upcoming season.

Do you guys think that there is any truth to that? If so, how are we supposed to trade him if both those guys want him on the team? I thought Mills, Decolo and possibly Joseph are guys that the Spurs would want to move, so not sure what I think about it if Tim and Tony don't want Mills traded.

I remember you mentioning this. So I did a little research and tried to find the reference, but had no luck finding it.
If you have any clues as to where to look I would really like to know.

I think it was an Australian poster who said it. It was definitely someone on this site. He said he heard it when Patrick was in Australia recently. I'd like to read it again too. I thought he was someone we should look at trading, but not sure what to think about it if both Tim and TP really want him to stay on the team.

take it with a grain of salt. better two grains. a comment like maybe "I have a good relationship with Tim and Tony" is quickly turned into something completly different, especially by local media or local fans.

remember that both of Tim's reportedly best friends on the team were traded. (Antonio Daniels in 2002 and Malik Rose in 2005). could have Tim vetoed such a move? sure he could. did he? no. he understands better than any player, what the business is about. if Pop and RC decide to move Mills, (b/c they need the roster spot, for example) neither Tim nor Tony will do anything to block this move.

I found the post. Not sure who Benfti's source is, but here it is anyway :

I was told from a very source the other day that TP and timmy have asked RC to see that Patty remain a spur after this season. Testament to his standing in the inner sanctum

I can further that. My source is an agent. Also there is several comments made by Tony and Tim on Australian TV (a show that is airing again on Thursday, which i will record
and upload) which fell into line with what the agent told me as to their respective opinions on Mills as a player and a person

Well, if they like him that much, then I am willing to give him another chance.

The main problem I have with him is his defense. He was just as bad, if not worse than Neal when it came to losing three point shooters and being stuck in no mans land, which in turn led to huge runs from other teams. That last regular season game against Golden State, they completely buried us when he had defensive lapses and left their shooters wide open, time after time after time. After that game I just wasn't happy with him at all. He really needs to work on his rotations and awareness if he is to stay on the team. I think he will come around on offense, but defense is where he needs a lot of work.

Thanks for posting and telling us where your info came from.

I'll check into him now, I heard about him recently but I won't lie. . .I've never heard of him before then.

I'm seeing some shit about him being on the Miami Heat summer league team and being "friends with James". Why didn't they want him? The skills they talk about seem enticing and what the Spurs look for, but why would Miami pass up on a freebie like that? Entirely set on Chalmbers and Cole, or is there more to it?

As for Magette. . .yeah I'm not sold on him, but Young I really want. Assuming he ends up being a decent 3pt shooter playing off of our better players (should be open a lot like all our SFs end up being with Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili demanding so much attention), his added defense off the bench is one of the two things we were really missing last year. That and a 3rd playmaker, which we won't be getting. . .but it's nice to only have one particular weakness. Most teams have a lot more than we do.

The opinions are pretty equally divided as to who might be the better fit for the Spurs between Cojo and Kabongo.
However, Kabongo wins the name contest hands down! :lol

Perhaps our standards are just a bit high. A 13th or 14th man on your roster isn't going to be perfect. If he's a good fit that your core players like, and he can drop 60 total points in B2B games, AND will play for the minimum, or close to it, you re-sign him.

he'll never play if he's on the roster all season. pop will keep him on the end of the bench until he complains and is eventually cut.

Hi mate, I didn't want you to go to the trouble to upload the video, but if you could, I'm now even more interested in seeing what the comments from Tim and Tony were, as people are still saying that he should be traded.

Surely Maggette could beat out Young in a backup SF battle in training camp? Anyone heard how the SF spot is going?

Knowing Pop, Young will probably win it.

Free agent Sam Young has signed a contract with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League in a deal that contains an NBA escape clause, agent Joel Bell told RealGM.
“Sam had other options, but this one made the most sense and will pay him as the highest player in the league,” Bell said.
