Parker = the professor
Timmy = Main Event
Ginobili = AO

This is kind of stretch since no one plays defense and has no outside shot, but are comparable based on style.

AND 1 mixes it up in South Texas
Joe Ruiz / Managing Editor

SAN ANTONIO — More than 100 basketball players withstood temperatures in the high 90s Monday afternoon for an opportunity to represent Team San Antonio in the AND1 Mix Tape Tour at the SBC Center.

Participants ranging in age from young teenagers to adults dribbled through their legs and smacked their opponents’ heads in jest — all in an attempt to impress the judges for one of four spots on the team — along with a chance to join the AND1 Mix Tape Tour in a reality television format and subject themselves to possibly being knocked off by the next town’s best streetballer.

After watching a few of the competitors, John “Helicopter” Humphrey, one of the players on the AND1 team, didn’t think any of the San Antonio contingent could compete for his job.

“They don’t have the heart and the dedication,” Helicopter said. “They’re in it for the show and not for the love of the game. The love of the game will win every time.”

The 24-year-old baller from North Carolina earned his spot on the tour and his nickname with his high-flying, acrobatic dunks.

While most casual observers of AND1 believe the game is solely focused on entertainment rather than basketball, many of those on the tour believe their fundamentals are what will help them improve their skills and chances of joining the NBA, which is where most of the AND1 players are trying to go.

“Part of my game is that I don’t have any fanciness; my game is totally fundamentally sound,” Cardell “Ballaholic” Butler said. “I just go out and play basketball; all that takes a lot out, and plus, if you don’t make the basket … it messes up your game because you don’t want to do something you never do.”

Ballaholic joined the tour after the first stop on the 2005 tour in Oakland, Calif., and was a finalist in last year’s tour.

Out of the 100-plus contenders, 20 made the initial cut, including 14-year-old Charles Johnson, who goes by C.J. on the streets.

“My dad taught me (basketball), but I like to watch (Orlando Magic guard) Steve Francis, Hot Sauce, AO and all of them and just try to learn all of their moves. I just want to play in the SBC Center and play well. The Professor’s not ready for me,” Johnson said, referring to AND1 Mix Tape players Philip “Hot Sauce” Champion, Aaron “AO” Owens and Grayson “Professor” Boucher.

While C.J. was unable to make the final three (three players were selected by judges, the fourth player won a skills competition), he did perform in a dribble contest prior the game.

Cory Stredic, a 6-foot-4, 320-pound forward/center earn-
ed a spot on Team SA by accomplishing two things with his large frame.

“I wanted to crossover, then I wanted to dunk; I did that,” Stredic said. “I want to crossover and dunk now that I’m in the building.”

The big man accomplished both in his time on the floor during AND1’s 101-90 defeat of Team SA.

The crowd of 4,990 watched Team SA play a physical game throughout, knocking a number of the AND1 team members to the floor, but the blue-and-silver-clad bunch played stronger defense in the second half to overcome their four-point halftime deficit by causing a number of steals and blocking shots to take advantage of their fast-break abilities.

One of the more popular players on the tour is Dennis “Spyda” Chism out of Atlanta. Spyda joined the Mix Tape team after winning the overall contest last season.

“It’s entertainment for the crowd, but we don’t like to lose,” Spyda said. “It’s just not AND1 to lose. If we lose, we beat ourselves. We can’t let the opposing team beat us.”

The rigors of the tour can take their toll on the players, especially since the tour travels across the country by bus.

“It’s very tough both mentally and physically,” he said. “If you don’t have both of those things together, you’re going to break down. You’re not going to do what you do. My motto is ‘Spyda does what Spyda do,’ and what it takes to do both is focus.”

The tour is also being filmed for production of the fourth season of Streetball, which airs late Tuesday evenings on ESPN2.

I went to the And 1 event here in SA and found it to be quite entertaining. I definately wouldn't call what they do basketball but its a good show. I enjoyed AO, Baby Shaq, Spyda, and The Professor. I liked the local kid Circus too.

If they had to play under NBA rules against a technically sound team of kids with similar ability they would be wiping them off the floor though.

Actually, I talked with Spyda about that a lot. He specifically said he wasn't pining for a move to the NBA.

When I asked him why, he just said that he was having too much fun on the AND1 tour and that when his skills wouldn't let him play as well as he wanted anymore, he'd be happy to go home (to Atlanta, IIRC) and play video games and take care of his family.

The two guys that got picked up in the first few stops in this year's tour have high aspirations for the NBA (Ballaholic and 757).

Did ballaholic go to college?

I think he played college ball and participated in a dunk contest. Purdue?

Not sure, but if he has college experience he might make it, he's as good as a scorer as 757.

True, but I don't think they're trying to "compete" in a sense with the NBA. The AND1 people know what they do and embrace it - unlike the XFL, for instance.

And Ballaholic (and a little from 757) was playing good defense and did a lot of the little things on offense.

If he did five "flashy" things during that game, it was too many.

Kinda off topic, but I think that the xfl would have worked had they had another 2-4 weeks to practice. There were a lot of broken plays when I watched it and everyone just looked like they weren't used to the playbook and their teammates.

I would have been into it but it was just bad football. Kinda reminds of some of the bowl games in college where they don't play for 4+ weeks.

I watch it a couple of times a year when they show 4 or 5 shows at once...it was on tonight as a matter of fact.

I don't know why anyone would hate on those guys...they play hard, they take pride in what they do, and they aren't spoiled millionaires...

If you long for the old days when guys played for the love of the game...these are your type of guys right here...the modern day ABA...the NBA before it was bigtime.

IMO, the reason most of these guys aren't in the NBA is because they lack size. I think Bruce Bowen or Manu would be a C on most of these teams. They don't lack talent...most of these guys can jump out of the damn gym and what they do becomes more impressive when you realize their average height is about 6'1.

Tonight they showed a game in Phoenix, one in Houston, and the one in SA...

Amare Stoudamire was at the Phoenix game...he seemed to be having a good time...it's hard to dislike Amare, even if he is cocky. I like him.

One of the guys(AO) called out Mike James and he actually played against the And1 team in the Houston game...

Isn't he under contract to the Rockets? How did he pull that off?

His team barely won and AO held his own against him(I think that guy is the most likely to make it to the NBA...the others are mostly little guys that play like bigmen).

I was disappointed in the SA game...no Spurs were there. I guess because they are all sick of basketball and on vacation lmao.

I'd like to see Manu show up at one of those games...I bet they'd get a kick out of it, and Manu would make them look stupid if they tried that showy dribble stuff.

Again, I think AO is the best one...he's just a cut above all the other guys in terms of talent.

Supposedly the professor guy turned down a basketball scholarship to try out for the streetball contract...he says he wants to play in the NBA eventually...but at 5'9 he's just too small and too slow to make it in the NBA IMO.

They have a running clock and no fouls (stoppage for fouls, a foul results in taking the ball out or in the case of an "and 1", the point is immediately rewarded).

Reason I bring that up is it's very easy to say they don't play defense, et al., but while there wasn't a set defense (like an NBA team), a number of the individual players attempt defense in hopes of embarrasing the opposition.

But what I don't like on the basketball court is when you get a couple of guys who come and try to ball like And1 and then get away with traveling, carrying, double-dribbling, etc. just because it looks cool. Maybe in a pick up game...ok...but when I play in tournements and all they have is a "court moniter" who doesn't know anything about basketball, I hate that shit.

Yeah And1 travels, we all know and if you don't take it for entertainment, then you don't get the point of it. Its not supposed to be true basketball. They have a guy on the court screaming in the microphone the whole time. I like watching it to see interviews of some the guys that claim they could be in the league or whatever. They do give props to NBA players though and Mike James did get shown up by AO in that game, but thats how ESPN cut it, who knows what really happened the whole game. I respect James for even going out there though because most NBA players would not do that for fear of getting embarrassed. Its a different brand of basketball out there. You can't imagine Kyle Korver or Bruce Bowen playing out there but in a system those guys are good NBA players.
