This might reach 2 pages by series end, but doubtful. Scherzer is dealing early on--7 K's through 3. Boston with 0 runs and 1 hit through 12 innings thus far

Holy hell Boston, are ya'll really gonna go scoreless 2 games in a row? What's worse is their pitching has been phenomenal

Congrats to the Boston Red Sox for getting on the scoreboard. Only down 2-0, with 3 guaranteed appearances of Verlander/Scherzer left if you happen to go the distance.

That sucked. Would have been nice going back to Detroit up 2-0.

Will be interesting how this affects both teams. I expect the starting pitching to continue to perform well. But now Boston has life. Might need Verlander to go 9 innings next game.

You sure Jimmy L won't pull Verlander in the 8th at 110 pitches, despite being able to throw 135 in April?

If JV says he can go in the 9th, I think Leyland would give him the opportunity to do it, particularly with the way the bullpen and even Benoit have been shaky.

In game 5 against Oakland, JV himself said he was gassed after the 8th in the post game. Probably because every pitch was stressful with the season on the line and the offense not giving him much run support. JV is the one guy Leyland would allow to pitch into the 120s as long as he's pitching well and he says he can go. And Leyland shouldn't trust anyone in the bullpen right now.

Absolutely should have thrown him a first pitch change-up. First pitch fastball right down the middle of the plate was something Ortiz was geared up for. In fact, I might have just pitched around Ortiz in that situation. Walking in a run doesn't hurt the Tigers. But most people can't fathom the idea of walking in a run and bringing up the go-ahead run to the plate. I'd still have considered it, and at the very least not give Ortiz one good pitch to hit and roll the dice with Napoli.

If you look at the posted replay of the home run the speed of the pitch was only 86 MPH.
He probably was throwing a change up or a splitter. If that was his fast ball it sucks

100% agreed. They don't even have to make it obvious. Have Leyland or the PC go out there and tell him to make Papi chase shit out of the zone. If he stays disciplined and forces the walk, so be it. Then it's just 5-2.

My bad. Didn't notice that. Didn't pay attention to the pitch speed.

Then it was a horribly located splitter. Way too much plate. Way too high for an offspeed pitch.

It looks like Papi went out and reached for it. He had enough bat speed to
get out there just enough. Even so Hunter made a hell of a try for the ball.
It was that close.

I guess we disagree. To me it looks like the pitch is tailing away to the right side
of the strike zone if not out of it.

The ball Ortiz homered looked like a good pitch low and away. It's not like he was hanging curveballs over the plate. Throwing only garbage out of the strike zone is playing not to lose. It was a good pitch and just better hitting.

This series sucks...I was right about the AL last week in the Rays thread--the AL playoff teams are boring as shit this year. Like them or hate them, the Rangers, Yanks, Angels, etc are all interesting to watch and would be better draws. Definitely pulling for the Dodgers or Cards to win it all.

We knew that he was suspended for ped's but it won't do any good to get butthurt over it.
There is reports that some of the Red Sox players though Peralta should not have been
allowed to play. But we all know it was commissioner Bud who said it was ok to play.

JamStone

Up and down but competitive series so far. In reality, the first three games of the series, either team could have easily won. The series could be 3-1 for either team and heck the Tigers could have taken all 4 games already. But that's what happens with two good teams who are grinding out each game. This series has been very unpredictable from jumpstreet. Jon Lester and the Red Sox at home for game 1 against the Tigers 3rd starter (albeit very good too) in Sanchez. And the Tigers take it 1-0. Scherzer pitches a gem only to watch the Tigers bullpen blow a 4 run lead. Maybe the Tigers bullpen isn't all that great but you still expect the back-end to hold a 4 run lead in the 8th inning. Tigers all set up in game 3 with Verlander at home and he gets outdueled by the resurrected corpse of John Lackey. And then yesterday, again very unpredictable. Peavy, a veteran tough-as-nails pitcher, walks 3 guys in one inning to open the gates and sure-gloved Pedroia miffs on a double-play ball that would have ended the inning and prevented 4 runs.

Lots of ups and downs, highs and lows, oddities and great pitching. And here we are at 2-2. Whoever wins game 5 obviously has the edge. It will be extremely difficult for the Tigers to win games 6 & 7 in Boston. But on the other hand, it will be extremely difficult for the Red Sox to beat BOTH Scherzer and Verlander for a second time this series. Big game tonight.

Nolan was a baseball guy and he gave the Rangers cred that they needed. They
