I do think he deserves a backup center minutes at 15-20 mins though

It depends on a couple of things. The biggest would seem to be Jeff Ayres.

Those two will duke it out to be the 4th big, and that player will likely get those minutes. Duncan/Splitter/Diaw are pretty well set as our top 3. Bonner is the 6th big. Now we're fighting over the scraps.

As the season progresses obviously things can shift. But that's how I see it for the season start.

I think they'll go to Ayres more than Baynes, but he'll definitely get a lot of minutes depending on the buildup of the team they'll be facing. But I think he'll definitely get consistent playing time as opposed to last year..

I really like the flexibility we have with the second unit bigs. Bonner, Baynes and Ayres can be helpful against the different challenges other teams present ... Playing time might be spread and Pop might even consider to give Tiago a day off in a b2b

It's amazing how folks still don't understand how Pop runs the team with regard to minutes, especially with bench players. He uses the merit system. Everyone starts even and then they get the minutes they earn by performance in practice and in the games. No one gets a pass based on years in the league or salary or whatever. Jax apparently never understood that past heroics or skill levels determined the minutes he played---and he's gone.

If Baynes should suddenly begin to take his game to a higher level, he will be rewarded with more minutes. If he demonstrates he can play center better than Splitter, he will begin to take those minutes. Probably not going to happen, but it could thanks to Pop's meritocracy. If it comes down to a competition between Ayres and Diaw or Baynes, it will benefit all of them to have to work hard and produce.

Completely wrong, Splitter much like Jefferson before him is "protected" because he has a lot years left on a big money contract and benching him would destroy his trade value...

He was earning minutes when the Spurs thought they could just play offense. Once they had their defensive renaissance, not so much.

I don't know that you can say with certainty that Ayers is better. He's been a 7mpg end of the bench guy his whole career so it's not as if he has the skins on the wall to prove it.. Baynes ceiling moving forward is higher.

Ayres looked much inferior in the Hawks game. He looked shitty even if it was a down game for him.

If this were true Jefferson wouldn't have played past year 1 with the Spurs. Pop plays the guys that he thinks execute the defense first, and the offense as an afterthought. Even if Baynes plays well, he'll get benched if he isn't executing the system. RJ continued to get minutes because he did exactly what he was told to do, often to a point of weakness.
