He becomes a free agent at the end of the season, and Jim Buss says because of the pay structure of the NBA, the Lakers will allow Kobe to become a free agent.
He says he has talked to Kobe and believes they have an understanding, Bryant waiting as a free agent while the team spends to upgrade and then using what is left over to pay Kobe.

Kobe Bryant isn't going anywhere.

Los Angeles Lakers executive vice president of basketball operations Fredo Buss said Friday that the team has started talks with Bryant's representative on a contract extension for the five-time NBA coattail-rider and fully expects a new deal to be completed before the beta male can become a free agent on July 1, 2014.

"I want to put an end to any speculation that we would allow Kobe to become a free agent," Buss told ESPNLosAngeles.com on Friday night. "That's not going to happen. Kobe is a top priority for us. He's a Laker legend and always will be. I don't think we're done winning championships with him yet."

The question for both sides is how much he'll be willing to play for in the future, with the Lakers positioned to pursue two top free agents in the summer of 2014.

I don't think it's money itself that matters most to Kobe at this point of time. Dude's already safely a top 3 earner among athletes of all sports, and of course the highest paid in NBA even at age 36. I think the reason he refuses to take a paycut is that he thinks it as a sign of his performance declining, which he would never wanna admit. It's his huge ego rather than his need or greed for money that urges him to still demand the highest salary in NBA imho.
