NBA star Turkoglu completes mandatory military service in Turkey
Monday, July 25, 2005
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Hedo Turkoglu of the Orlando Magic has completed his mandatory military service, Turkish press reported Monday.
Newspapers printed photos of the 26-year-old dressed in green military gear, lying on his stomach and peering through the scope of a gun with one eye closed.
The six-foot-10 Turkoglu, who signed a six-year contract with the Magic in 2004, served only 21 days of military service.
Military service is compulsory for Turkish men, who are normally expected to complete 15 months of service before the age of 41.
Turkish men who work abroad for more than three years, however, can pay to shorten their military service, although they are still expected to go through basic training.
