Mills really wants to take a shit and Cojo wasn't using the pot. All hail the new backup point/instant offense 3rd guard!

Do we need to schedule a ceremony for the passing of the waving towel to down (or is it up?) to Corey?

I watched the end of the Knicks game and cringed each time Neal brought the ball up (Knight got hurt; Gary did lead the Bucks in scoring and assists). Mills could well be a nice upgrade over him if he plays a lick of D.

Weird thing is that even though Neal lead the team in field goal attempts, he also lead the team with 5 assists. That has to be a career high for him.

Exactly. Quick release, ice water 3's. He'll hit 'em when they count.

No more a point guard than Neal was, but that's not the role either was filling.

Always been a fan strictly because his positive attitude is infectious. After leading the Olympics in points, everyone knew he was a potential offensive threat. Throw in his excellent shape and extra effort on D, and you have CoJo worried about his position again. Good. Let those two hungry dogs continue to compete for that backup PG bone.

Damn this team is deep.

I was just thinking how I was one of the main guys banging on the table for Jarrett Jack in the offseason. While watching the Cavs game I am wondering if Patty might not be a better player this season. His energy, his shooting and especially his defense. He might be just as good at a fraction of the price and none of the headaches. But as far as the church go I was a Peppermint Patty guy since he was just waving the towel.

Thanks for posting!

This off-season Mills was blown away when the Spurs asked him to join their delegation which pitched the club to the NBA's top free agent, forward-centre LaMarcus Aldridge, who was also Mills' former teammate in Portland.
Aldridge was won over by the Spurs and has joined the club on a long-term deal.
"I was in the mix for that deal which was a good experience actually to be involved with it and see what goes on," Mills said.
"The role I have now with the Spurs has grown and not just by my teammates but the whole organisation and I'm realising it now where I don't think I did before."

We know Mills is capable of filling a role when healthy. The question I have is whether he may be replaced by one of the new younger guys like Forbes with a good shot and a little more height. Then maybe we could trade him to a team that would give us a good draft choice. I doubt we'd get value for him in a trade for another player.

I'm not advocating a trade because personally, I like the guy a lot because he's a great character guy, a deadly shooter when on and always gives max effort. This is one of those tough FO decisions in trying to balance out the team with some of our options we have with the young players we're bringing to camp.

Forbes wont even make the cut. But I can play along.

Pretend we lose Patty.

Can Forbes score at an NBA level?

Can he score off the dribble like Patty?

Is he a spot up shooter or scorer?

Does he have Playoff experience?

How much time does he need to gel with the system and players?(two separate things)

What intangibles does Forbes bring?

Does he hound like Patty?

I can go on and on tbh...

It makes almost negative sense to trade AWAY a player. The Spurs only do that in extreme circumstances (Jefferson and De Colo and Splitter/Diaw, but I don't count those two). They'll trade FOR players using some of their current players (Hill for Kawhi, with Splitter for LMA and Diaw for Gasol feeling more appropriate here). Even if Forbes is good, I don't see them moving Patty. They have decent control over Bryn for four to seven years if he makes the team. They don't need to rush him into the rotation, and they aren't trading away a rotation player to give a 16th man a slot. But if the Spurs decided they needed to acquire another player (and I actually can't think right now -- on paper, they don't have any spot in the rotation for another need), then them liking Forbes would definitely make it easier to trade away Mills (who's easily the most tradeable of the rotation guys at this point).

The most tradeable especially in a contract season making 3plus mil a year and could net alot more than that next season with the salary cap rising again. It's a lose lose for the Spurs. If he plays well and gets his stroke back this season we could lose him to a team that overpays. If he struggles again then Spurs could have the option to trade him before the deadline. But do you really think he is capable of taking a huge paycut to stay with this team though? They're not trading away Parker and if Murray shows some promise during this season i can certainly see them trading away Mills before the deadline.

No way in hell the team trades mills at deadline. Lets play again

Lets assume Murray is going God Mode.

We trade Patty.

What happens if Tony gets injured. What happens if Murray gets injured.

None of those players provide stroking from 3. :lol

What happens when Tony is struggling and vice versa?

You got no options. I mean this is all assuming Murray goes beastmode. Spurs are not known for trading pieces they need for some unknown.

Well that certainly all depends on what their target is next summer. If by somehow they win the chip and want to keep the band together then yes, but if they don't and if the target is Paul or someone else, wouldn't Mills be the odd man out? The only reason i see the Spurs trying to keep him is if he himself goes beastmode regardless of the outcome and if Murray doesn't show enough during his rookie season.

I am actually inclined to believe Patty is a priority for PATFO to re-sign. Just Pop and his schitck with veterans and Manu retiring. If we think about it, next season once Manu (likely) retires it truly will be a new era for the bench. I doubt PATFO wants to go there without Patty, so I am counting Patty as a must keep.

Then there is Dedmon, who if he becomes a solid contributor is probably a must keep as well.

As we have chatted about, the last guy in priority is probably JSimms. It makes no sense to trade him out while they are still trying to win with a 39 yr old SG in an important bench role, but then the offseason is different. He needs to have a great season and emerge as a rotation player to be retained, which means they will give him his chance this season.

I agree with Chinook here:
I think they are perfectly willing to pay Mills what it takes to keep him next summer., but I admit you have planted the seed of doubt in me Emperor, concerning how Murray emerging changes the picture, but as Mills plays as a SG anyways, Murray can be a ball handler in the bench next to Mills, if it comes to Pop wanting to open up time for Dijon to develop into a starting role eventually and two years from now the Spurs could be a very different team.

I don't think free agency is in the cards next summer. They've spent too much money already.
hhhmm You think the plan is to resign their guys this next offseason and to grow internally the rookies and young players they have?
