Ayres was his biological father's last name, and his stepfather (Pendergraph) is no longer part of him or his mother's life. He decided to change the name around the time him and his wife had their kid in the summer.

He had actually thought about changing it as far back as the end of HS, but he didn't want to mess up his recruiting. Same thing when he entered the NBA.
