"This could be nothing more than a minor chest contusion, and maybe the Spurs (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/san-antonio-spurs) are just being extra cautious with their veteran big-man, but there is a rumor going around that Tim sustained a broken rib. If the spasms clear up and the MRI is negative, Tim could be back sometime during their West Coast trip that starts in LA tomorrow. If a rib is broken we can expect the Spurs to ease Duncan back to the lineup. Rib fractures usually take 4-6 weeks to heal."

Not trying to freak people out, but that makes me worried. How reliable do y'all consider Pounding the Rock? Are the "rumors" they hear just bullshit or do they actually have connections with the team?

Either way, I guess we'll figure out soon enough...

I think the spurs are just being cautious. I am hoping he is back tomorrow for the laker game.

Pounding the Rock is pretty reputable but they didn't name any sources and just called it a rumor. I wouldn't worry too much. Even if Duncan does end up missing 4-6 weeks, it wouldn't affect the Spurs too much. This is essentially the same team as last year's and Duncan should reintegrate just fine. Spurs are also still deep as hell so they can get by without Duncan for a while. Just think of it as giving Duncan more offseason rest.

If Tim does miss time, it means Baynes would get some minutes in which he could prove his value

I'm hoping he'll be okay soon but 4-6 weeks isn't the end of the world. Spurs will be fine regardless.

Yeah, 4-6 weeks isn't a deathspell for our season or anything...it'd definitely make things harder though in terms of staying on top of the West.

Who would get the nod to start if Duncan were to be out for significant time? Diaw? Bonner (hope to hell not, but he started almost the entire '08-09 season)?

Yes, it may be a blessing in disguise for the team in giving Baynes and Ayers some valuable experience.

All it means is Bonner will start.

Diaw would start next to Splitter

Not if Game 1 was any indication. Diaw does a better job coming off the bench anyways.

If he sits might be a silver lining- more rest. At his age playing 60 regular season games doesn't seem like a bad idea. Gives time to develop Baynes and Ayres.

I'm using last year as my example when Duncan was out with the bad knee.

We could lose all the games and we'd be fine. Which we won't. Good to get Timmy healthy with some extra time off.

PtR is quite respectable and does have ties with the team. I would think the rumor was speculation before the MRI.

Looking at the replay, Allen hit him high, which is usually the strongest, thickest bones in your rib cage, and rarely get broken. Mostly the lower rib cage is susceptible to fractures. There is spasm of the muscles, so I would hardly call this a Minor contusion.

Allen hit him square with the elbow, an acute hit like that usually will cause a deep contusion, which will take about a week to heal.

This is worrying about nothing until anything is reported. I doubt it's that serious.

It was a hard shot, and if landed in the right spot, could have cracked a rib. Even though I hope not, it also would not be too rough on us. You don't see too many broken ribs in basketball do you?
