T-Shirt Condemned: "New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico"

The Anti-Defamation League has asked retailer Urban Outfitters to stop selling a T-shirt that reads: "New Mexico, Cleaner than Regular Mexico."

"This is saying that the country of Mexico is a dirty place," said Barry Morrison, regional director of the civil rights group. "Dirty can be interpreted figuratively and literally."

The group wants the Philadelphia-based retailer to get rid of all its inventory.

Urban Outfitters did not immediately return calls for comment Friday. The retailer, which targets 18- to 30-year-olds, has run into similar controversy before.

Two years ago, it stopped selling a game called "Ghettopoly" after protests by black civil rights leaders. Last year, it halted sales of a T-shirt that read "Everyone Loves A Jewish Girl," surrounded by dollar signs, after the Anti-Defamation League objected.

A "Voting is for Old People" T-shirt angered pro-voting groups.

Urban Outfitters operates 77 stores in the United States, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. This year, first-quarter profits rose by 60 percent to $27.4 million, compared to the same period a year ago.

Where does Urban Outfitters come up with these stupid mottos for their T-shirts?

What do liberals have to do with this? If a company made a shirt bashing Conservatives or a Conservative Commentator or a Conservative belief, would there be an outrage?

I just think this is bad business sense...probably near the stupid category.

I have some interesting mottos for Urban Outfitters' new T-shirts. Maybe with these, they can offend more people and therefore sell more shirts. There's always people that find the outrageous and offensive funny (remember the Migra video?):

"Americans, we are really stupid, we re-elected Bush"

"Stinking inmigrant, don't set foot in our land. This is Europe and you are not welcome"

"I'm a Muslim: Run you fool, I have a heavy jacket, it's summer and I'm 'loaded' "

"This is Texas: We even execute the mentally challenged"

"Hitler was on to something"

"I'm past flag burning and on to flag shitting"

"Canadians are so fucking boring, they invented curling"

"The KKK are good folks"

"We don't know if Uruguay is in LatAm or in Africa, we are gringos!"

"Metric system is for suckas, we like: inches, feet, miles, ounces, gallons, farenheit, yards, acres"

"Come to Paris, but if you don't speak French: FUCK YOU!"

"Who can be so stupid as to enjoy watching pro wreslting?" (this one is meant to ofend whottt)

"Who needs those stinking beaners, lets seal the border!"

"We are Americans, simple people, but if you piss us off, we'll invade your country and claim that 'we have liberated you' "

Feel free to chime in with some more ingenious mottos for UO.

I don't understand why the above statement is offensive. I enjoy refering to SI as "commie measurements". :lol

What's wrong with the British System? The UK never should have gave up on their own system (they still haven't in some regards), and now that sanctions have been lifted on Libya we don't have to worry about conversions to pesky metric! Metric sucks for anything industrial in the US, we have our own standardized sizes.

The whole World uses the metric system, a much simpler system, but the US (and Britain, although they moved to World standards now) uses its own special measuring systems.

Let’s see. When measuring distances in the American system you use: inches, feet, yards?, miles.

So let me get this straight. 1 foot is equivalent to 12 inches and 1 yard is 3 feet. Now 1 mile is 1,760 yards. Very simple, indeed.

In the metric system, distances are measured in centimeters, meters and kilometers. 1 meter = 100 centimeters. 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters. Straightforward.

When measuring mass, you guys use lbs, ounces and tons. 1 lb = 16 ounces and 1 ton = 2,000 lbs.

The World uses 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams; 1 metric ton = 1,000 kilograms. Again, straightforward.

When measuring volume, Americans use gallons, quarts, pints, cups, tablespoons, teaspoons . . . fuck this is easy to remember!

On the other hand, the World uses 1 liter = 1,000 cubic centimeters.

Then there’s other units which I dare not to ask about, such as stones, fathoms, rods, drams, grains, etc.

Temperature: The World uses degrees Celsius, Americans invented degrees Fahrenheit. In degrees Celsius, the water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees. In degrees Fahrenheit, it freezes 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees.

Conclusion: Metric system is based on multiples of 10, simple. American measuring systems are all over the fucking place.

You tell me which one is simpler.

Oh, metric is much simpler. But ask the average American how much a kilogram of an item is vs. a pound of that same item? Not many would know that a kilo is 2.2 lbs-mass, because kilograms measure mass and lbs measure force. If you think SI is so much superior, I would ask you why there are units such as kilograms-force? The average layperson does not ever consider such units. But you have to realize that the metric system was devised because the countries in Europe were in close approximation to each other and common measures were needed for trade. America was quite isolated at the time, and already tied into the British measurements. Continued isolation of the US made the system firmly entrenched nationwide, and that was multiplied many times over when the American system of manufacturing came about.

If you want further complication, the original surveys of some property in my home county of Gonzales, Texas was done back in the late 1820's when Texas was part of Mexico and is in Spanish imperial yards, or varas. We are stuck with any measurement system that is referenced officially. If you can't do a simple conversion, I'm not sure that I want to buy anything from you, anyway.

And since when is the US ever going to adopt something that the French came up with? They won't even drink French wine anymore. :lol

Hey, butthole, if you weren't so busy off trying to save the whales or something you would know that the Rankine scale is an absolute temperature scale with the same size units as Fahrenheit.

An absolute-temperature scale in which a measurement interval equals a Fahrenheit degree and in which zero degrees is equal to -459.67 degrees F (-273.16 degrees C). Named for William J.M. Rankine, a Scottish physicist.

It is also named for a Scot and not some fairy Englishman. :lol

The same reason you wouldn't use Celcius for Kelvin. Some thermodynamic computations (such as those involving the Ideal Gas Law) require an absolute basis of temperature, not one based on the freezing and boiling points of one liquid.
