Some people prefer high temps, loud fans, stutter, microstutter, coil whine, shitty drivers, crappy tech that kills frames (TressFX), and features that never pan out (Mantle). "Always Settle" tbh.

:wow:( I was under the impression that AMD still wins on performance per dollar though right? and they've been better with the drivers recently too right?

Yeah, I was fucking w/ the AMD users.

Price per dollar is definitely in favor of the red team. The R9290 has some great benchmark numbers, and a hacker has devised a way to turn it into the "X" overclocked version. At the same time it runs at 90 degrees C, and the fan sounds like a jet engine. I personally don't have any experience w/ the AMD drivers but some of the other tech forums I frequent constantly have people complaining of piss poor drivers, stutter, or micro stutter, even after the driver update release that AMD claims fixed all issues.

I have Nvidia, and I haven't experienced any temp or driver issues. My card overclocked to 1225 Mhz runs at 65 degrees. The fan isn't silent, but nothing too serious. Not to mention PhysX when implemented correctly, looks amazing. TressFX on the other hand looks like shit, and drops frames by 30 in Tomb Raider. Maybe another dev can figure out how to implement it correctly, but until then it sucks IMO.

I was thinking... is next week (Black Friday or Cyber Monday) the best time to build a PC ? A PC that normally would be $700 for like $500? I know it's hard to know without knowing the prices, but has anyone here ever built a PC through discounted Black Friday prices and got a lot of value for their buck?

Built last December, I think. Not for gaming. I just picked the things I wanted, and got some really good deals too.

Case: Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl
Power Supply: SeaSonic SS-400FL
Motherboard: MSI FM2-A85XA-G65
Processor: AMD A10-5800K
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master GeminII S524
Memory: G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB DDR3-1866
Storage: Samsung 830 SSD (64 GB), WD VelociRaptor (500 GB)
Optical Drive: Sony Optiarc DVD/CD Writer
Monitor: ASUS PB238Q

Plus a cheap keyboard/mouse combo (temporary), which is surprisingly decent (Logitech mk120).

Not necessarily the best time to build the PC, but a great time to pick up a GPU and a processor at the least. I bought 150.00 RAM for 89.00 last BF, and I saw equally awesome deals for other shit on Cyber Monday. Shoot me a PM with whatever deal you find on either day, I'll help you w/ whatever you thinking about picking up.

Motherboards are cheap to begin with. ASRock Z77 for 84.99 here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157325

That will get you the popular Z77 chipset great for easy overclocking of the processor, plus the 1155 socket that will work w/ the 3570k.

This has always baffled me. What games do you play where the sound isn't exponentially louder than the noise coming from your case? I can't say I've ever been playing Battlefield or Sleeping Dogs or Deus Ex and been like, "man, I wish I could hear these explosions over the sound of my fans."

Also, FWIW, I've been with AMD since my 8800 GTS (and 3 of my friends who were running the same card) launched themselves within 3 months of each other and NVidia refused to admit a problem with the card design.

Never had a SINGLE issue with AMD cards that weren't related to poor coding on the game's part.

That said, BF4 is crashing like a mofo right now. xD

I can't say I've ever been playing Battlefield or Sleeping Dogs or Deus Ex and been like, "man, I wish I could hear these explosions over the sound of my fans." I don't know how to explain it. It's just annoying. I have a reference model 680 and my fan curve is set to be 5% higher than the current temp (for example 50 degrees = 55% fan) and when even at 70% fan it just bugs me. Also keep in mind, people aren't always going to have speakers on high volume, or want to wear headphones. I can only imagine a card running "normally" according to AMD at 90 degrees, it's basically now a GPU/space heater tbh.

That said, BF4 is crashing like a mofo right now. xD Screw NVIDIA, always work with the manufacturer. EVGA has the BEST damn customer service I've probably ever dealt with. The "Step Up" program allows you to swap out the GPU you bought assuming a better model launches within 6 months of purchase, and they will also send you a new replacement card prior to getting the faulty one back from the consumer.

Any idea of the cause of the BF4 crashes? VRAM maybe? Is your 7950 a 2GB or a 3GB? Settings too high? Have you tried running as an admin, or disabling any overlay programs like Precision X (gives me problems on a few games, namely modded Skyrim and Deadpool) or MSI afterburner?

NVidia's recall history is quite extensive too. All products will have their problems, but based on reading years of people's posts on tech websites, AMD users seem to have quite a bit more problems.

Hurried code. They pushed it through too fast. BF4 crashes a lot for *everyone* AFAIK. Though I played yesterday and I think I only had one crash the entire time, so it seems to be abating slightly.

First, no such thing as future proofing. Second, if you're not a gamer having your PC refreshed is much easier. Shit, an SSD with your OS freshly installed on it will make you feel like you have a brand new PC. Things get more difficult to refresh for gaming purposes as you may have to upgrade the processor, and to upgrade the processor you need to upgrade the board, and the new board requires different RAM, and so on.

So I would have to build a rig as large as a safety vault for this setup to be possible?

ElNono

Actually, I take that back, but you'll need LGA2011 processors (Sandy/Ivy Bridge E)... something like this would seemingly work then:

How much will a 128GB RAM and an 8TB SSD + 8TB HDD config cost? Well give me the same GPU as yours since I assume that's for the latest games...

Can a motherboard take all these specs?I actually had a friend pick the parts and build it for me, since I know fuck all about computers. I just gave him a budget to work with. I wanted him to future proof it, but, I can't say with absolute certainty that the money was allocated correctly.

Pushing 4K resolution, or dual screen 4K is dependent on the graphics cards, not RAM. 128 GB RAM is not realistic.

A dual monitor 4k setup would run great with 3 or 4 way SLI Titan Blacks, and a 4770K and 8-16 GB RAM.

Once I saw him talking about a motherboard that fits 4 processors I stopped reading. All you need is a motherboard with the features you want, that is capable of tri or quad even SLI. You're gonna need graphics cards that have a ton of VRAM, and the Titan Black's have 6 GB's of it.

Not sure there are any Crysis 3 mods.. it looks fucking amazing as is though.. here are my recommendations top to bottom

1. Skyrim with a SHIT TON of mods - a year later I am still modding this shit. Check the video below, this is the ENB I use, it's the shit. If you add me on Steam, I can help you get your mods started.
2. Crysis 3
3. Arma 3
4. BF4
5. Metro Last Light
6. Tomb Raider
7. The Witcher 2 (should be able to run with ubersampling on)
8. Far Cry 3
9. Splinter Cell Blacklist

I actually had a friend pick the parts and build it for me, since I know fuck all about computers. I just gave him a budget to work with. I wanted him to future proof it, but, I can't say with absolute certainty that the money was allocated correctly.

No such thing as future proofing, but your rig is god damn near it. You will be good for at least 5 years before games start pushing it, IMO. Are those 780's 3GB versions? That might be your only issue if you start pushing higher resolutions.

lists the specs of a machine to play all out max settings or a machine to play on 4k tv

It depends on your definition of max settings, and the framerate you prefer to play at. I personally am spoiled at 60 FPS or better, and can't stand the choppiness of anything less than 60 FPS. Also, anti-aliasing is a huge performance hit, and sometimes isn't worth it. So assuming max settings means AA in it's highest setting..

Max settings at 1080p locked in at 60 FPS or better can be achieved currently on like 98% of current games with a current quad core i5 or better, or the AMD equivalent and a 780/780Ti or AMD equivalent.

I have a 2GB GTX 680 (overclocked) and 3570k (overclocked to 4.5 Ghz) and I run all games at 60 FPS / 1080p, and the only setting I may ever have to turn down to ahcieve that is AA. I am unable to completely max out games like Assassin's Creed 4 (unoptimzed POS though), Tomb Raider (TressFX is a fucking huge resource hog for realistic hair physics), Far Cry to name a few. On a 23" monitor, AA is not as important so I just adjust to get 60 FPS.

Here are some 4K benchmarks for you to take a look at. One thing to keep in mind is the tester used anti-aliasing, which is pointless considering 4K resolution is so damn high to begin with.

Yeah, those pics are fucking unbelievable. For the record the FPS that guy was getting was in the low teens or less, that lush grass and trees mod combined with an ENB mod is a killer to the framerates. They are beautiful to look at though. At this age I don't have the attention span to play for very long, but when a game is that good to look at, it really keeps me engaged. I have some sick screenshots I've taken too (minus lush grash and trees)..

Yeah, Ubisoft Kiev is notoriously bad at optimization of PC ports. Far Cry 3 was wonderfully optimized on PC, and had all the DX11 bells and whistles that the consoles didn't. AC4 was the same way..was hardly an improvement over the graphics of AC Revelations, yet struggles to stay locked at 60 FPS on a 680 and 3570k.

By the time it releases quadcore i7 and R9 290 will probably be lower midrange considering Intel is moving their i5 and i7 lines to hexacores this year and Nvidia is doing a shrink to 12nm lithography with Volta, which will probably be out this year too.
