Is this the best opening to a World Cup in the modern era of football? It's been the most entertaining I've seen, although I've only seen them from 98 onwards.

It's been pretty good, tbh... I think soccer is evening out everywhere, and you get great matchups... I've been watching since '82 and this one has a lot of goals in the early round...

A Chinese football fan has reportedly died after staying up on successive nights to watch the World Cup.

The 25-year-old man from Suzhou, near Shanghai, was found in front of his TV hours after the Netherlands beat Spain 5-1 in their first round game on Friday, which finished at around 5am Chinese time, and doctors said his death could have been caused by sleep deprivation.

The time difference between Suzhou and Brazil is 11 hours, meaning fans have to stay up through the night to follow the World Cup, and it appears this particular enthusiast took things a little too far.

According to the Xinhua news agency, doctors said the death was related to an excessive lack of sleep, but couldn't be sure whether it was sheer exhaustion or a possible heart attack.

So one side of the bracket is shaping up to be clearly tougher

Brazil
2nd place Chile
Colombia
Italy / Uruguay
France
1st place Germany

Vs

1st place Netherlands
Argentina
Belgium
2nd place USA

It's crucial for USA to win the group as they would be underdogs versus Belgium (instead of Russia/Korea) but if you're Germany, do you almost prefer the USA to beat Portugal and draw in the finale? Thus finishing 2nd

In what sense of the word 'culture' is Seven Nation Army? They have been just as boisterous as any of the non-whites and let's not forget the hooliganism. Which, though, isn't much of an issue these days still was mostly perpetuated by the whites. Who cares what they do--it's about having fun and cheering for your team. Not some quite bullshit like this is Wimbledon. Might as well take up tennis if you want that uppity white nonsense shit.

I'm partial to the light blue striped jerseys. The white shorts may be a bit much but its pretty cool gear. Yeah, they wore the darker kits in the previous WC. The all white, though, it kinda not their style though.

Who sings Seven Nation Army? Which nation

I would find their behavior obnoxious & it would affect my experience if I were at the game sitting next to them. Which is what South Africa was like since local population takes a portion of each match

England was the first then I heard it during the German Match and Netherlands when they were waxing Spain. I give you the vuvuzela was a terrible thing and that would've pissed me off--but that wasn't a black thing alone. Everyone was blowing into those horns. I like it when the fans sing their native songs whether its the Indomitable Lions or the Albiceleste supporters. I think the horns do put me in partial agreement but I don't think it should matter. These people are dropping hundreds upon thousands to be at the game and as long as they aren't stabbing each other or really being aggressive in the way of how they support their teams, then fuck it.

Yeah, I know it's the classic ARG colors, but I find the solid blue so much better this year:

It is just weird that they never wear them at all this year while other teams seem to alternate their jerseys game by game.

Didn't realize how often they wore solid blue in the past tournaments.

If you honestly don't think that a loud, constantly droning noise wouldn't affect the players then I don't know what to say. It clearly would affect communication, which in a team game is obviously crucial.

I don't see how this is hard to comprehend. It also made it nearly impossible to watch with any sound.

America has only two elite teams: Brazil and Argentina. When those two fail to meet expectations is normal for the latter stages to not have American teams. But it's not a matter of quality, is a matter of quantity. No matter how much Europe sucks they will always have the majority of teams in the latter stages just based on the numbers of teams they can get into the tournament.

Look at the 3 worst calls of the Tournament
- Fred penalty vs Croatia
- Dzeko's disallowed goal
- Italian red card

All of these directly effected qualifying for Europe. Portugal is in the toughest group. The only obvious chokes are England & Spain. If Swizz & Russia qualify, I'll call it even.

South America benefits from no border changes. Europe is constantly changing (IE Yugoslavia) new teams rise & old teams fall. It's a huge advantage to be able to pencil in a World Cup appearance every 4 years. Financial commitment and national backing.
There are still many quality teams watching from home
- Norway
- Sweden
- Slovakia
- Turkey
- Czech Republic
- Ukraine
- Hungary
- Bulgaria
- Poland

and many more

Euro's pretty easy qualifying schedule. Most matches are played in non-hostile enviroments, at sea level and pretty much in the same weather conditions you'd expect back home (some exceptions like Russia, but they're a minority). And you usually get 1, 2 or even 3 punching bags in the group to rest key players and concentrate on the team whose challenging your spot.

In the Americas you get absolutely hostile crowds throwing all kinds of shit on your players from papers and coins to fireworks and knives; parking outside your hotel to make noise to avoid the players getting a good night sleep and throwing rocks at the team bus. Refs also feel the pressure, you must play with absolute concentration or the slightest contact could be a penalty or a red card. And nevermind playing in spots like La Paz, Quito or Barranquilla with alttitude and heat. If they complain about Brazil, they should try Venezuela away, they'd probably be crawling 15 minutes into the match. For all their techo-savvy coaching staffs, they should try to play with the ball and forget about their robotic training :lol

And the distances to cover are far greater in the Americas. You have +5 hours flights. Most European nations are the size of my backyard :lol. You'd have to get a Group with Portugal, Iceland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Finland, Azerbaijan and Malta to start comparing. But the standard wouldn't be even close with all those minnows there.

I achnolwedge the hostile crowd, conditions and field quality. This is true.

Overall, I think South America has made big strides since 2006. We shall see how this translates in 2018 @ Putinland.

My point about South America is in modern times it's always been 9 nations. They know each other well. You don't have any up & coming nations like Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia or Estonia etc. It's difficult when you only qualify once every 12 years. To maintain financial & general public backing. Of the 36 UEFA teams ranked in the FIFA 70, only 6 qualify every single time. That's a lot of turnover.

Sidenote: Your description of Europe being "size of my backyard" makes it more impressive. Imagine Yugoslavia still being around, Germany being combined with Austria & Liechtstein, Czech + Slovakia, Russia still having Ukraine & Georgia, Poland + Lithuania. Finland with Estonia & Latvia. UK having Ireland, Scotland & Wales. ETC. These teams would be even better

Yes, but again, last world cup, after the group stage, everyone was talking about how dominant the American countries were, yet only one American team reached the semis... and it was fucking Uruguay going through the easiest path in the history of WCs. I mean, in 2010 the (American countries in round of 16)/(total of American countries in WC) ratio was much higher than the European ratio. This time history is repeating itself. Everyone is saying "this is South America, South America over Europe blah blah blah" but I only see Colombia or Chile getting to semis but failing to go further because they are much weaker mentally and physically, and play worse football than Netherlands and Germany. One out of four semi finalists is not a good thing. No finalist in South America will be much worse. Europeans will end up laughing at the American continent.

I expect a Germany-Holland final, tbh. But that doesn't take away from the fact that Europe underachieved on this World Cup. Teams like Spain, Italy and England getting eliminated in the first round is a huge failure. Compare that to South America's 5 of 6 teams already qualified with the chance of the 6th one to qualify too and it's already a success. Europe usually fields three times as many teams as any other confederation and have 6 of the 8 historically elite teams of course they're going to get the most amount of teams in the latter stages but that doesn't mean they do well on a particular World Cup it just mean that there are way too many countries jammed toghether on that little continent, tbh.

You are very biased tbh. Listing any of those teams are quality teams is a bit of a joke tbh. In this world cup, there are more good teams from americas than from europe, there's no question, and those teams are (not shockingly) playing far better than their european counterparts. With that said, only brasil and argentina are in the level of germany and netherlands, 2 and 2 for real contenders.

Norway - 8
Sweden - 13
Slovakia - 18
Turkey - 16
Czech Republic - 23
Ukraine - 26
Hungary - 27
Bulgaria - 28
Poland - 36

As a reference point: Belgium is #22. If none of those teams are quality, then 2/3 of the entire World Cup Tournament isn't either. Most if not all those teams would qualify in every region except for Europe & South America

1. Brazil vs Netherlands
2. Argentina vs Germany
3. Colombia vs France
4. Chile vs Belgium
5. Uruguay vs Greece
6. Ecuador vs Russia

I'll leave out Italy although they played South American #5 to an even match. In those 6 matches, I'll take Europe in atleast 4 of the matches. England & Portugal are the European bottom feeders in this Tournament and they still played USA & Uruguay very well. If Swizz & Russia make the Knockout Stage, then Europe will have performed decently.
- England bombed
- Spain finished 3rd in a very tough Group
- Everyone else has played nearly on Par

If no more than 1 South American team cracks the Semi-Final then how impressive was it all? I had Chile making the Knockout Stage and Ecuador is a surprise. Why should I be impressed by South Americans performance so far? Conmebol is the big winner thus far. USA & Mexico benefit from having a cake walk to Qualifying every 4 years. You think Klinsmann would have joined USA if they had to qualify from Europe? No. Because these teams would qualify only every 8-12 years.

It depends on the group you get. The qualifying system in Europe sucks, some shitty teams get a laughably easy group and qualify while better ones get knocked out because of bad luck with the draw. I pretty much doubt a team like Greece for example (which has a 50/50 chance to make it to quarters here, unbelievable) would have qualified to the WC playing in South America but a team like Sweden might.

Group E

- Albania
- Cyprus

Group B

- Czech
- Bulgaria
- Armenia
- Malta

Group H
- England
- Ukraine
- Montenegro
- Poland
- Moldova

Winner qualifies automatically. 2nd place team goes into Playoffs. I think those groups are pretty even. The gap between the 2nd & 3rd team isn't large. 4th Place teams of Norway, Bulgaria & Poland is pretty solid.
