:pop:
“Would he have been smart enough to get us out of that quagmire? It sort of started with him in office, but we’ll never know. “No wonder we don’t trust our government. What we got was a bunch of lies from politicians. It was just a series of ideologue misjudgments and the lies on top of that. “I think that was the beginning of the downfall, really, of our country. We lost the trust we had gained through the second World War, and our economic stability and, all of a sudden, it all started going downhill. “What I always think about is what would have happened with the damned Vietnam war. That’s always a big question.”

Hard to say. JFK just broke Vietnam the month he was killed by backing the coup against Diem and he was going to have to buy it all throughout the next election year. There is no way he could have left the south without any help for a full year. The republicans would have had a field day with that. But would it have been full military action? If he could have avoided it, maybe but it's hard to see the south's surviving a year without it.

JFK was not a legally elected president who lost the popular vote and stole Illinois and West Va. He probably would have been impeached in his second term. He was a dangerous and incompetent president. The worst president since Buchanan. Maybe Wilson. One gave us the US Civil War, the other WWI.
( I know I know...this one is pretty fucking bad but lets play it out....)

True, JFK did receive help from the Mafia in the West Virginia primary, and the Mafia delivered him the votes he needed in Chicago and Cook county to win the Presidency.
Highly doubtful he would have been impeached in his second admin. Hid approval rating peaked at 70%. Now LBJ would not have been on the 1964 ticket, would likely have been indicted on criminal charges of bribery and corruption and likely convicted and imprisoned.
JFK dangerous and incompetent? I guess that depends on one's definition. If fucking every woman around and being subject to blackmail, then yes stupid and incompetent. If turning on the Mafia and fucking them, yes that is dangerous. But not following the very insane, dangerous advice of Gen. Curtis LeMay to nuke the Soviet Union, that was wise.
The worst President since Buchanan? For a President that only served 2 years 10 months and basically had no meaningful legislation passed, it seems hard to classify him as the worst----or best President----as some have done.
No Vietnam would have turned Peter Holt into AJ Soprano
But yea the war was pretty shitty, add Nixon later and the USA politicians destroyed their trust with us and worldwide
