Basically, a combination of two lauded "superstar" players whose styles and skillsets actually overlap by about 95% and don't complement each other at all. It's not just their overlapping game styles that make the biggest obstacle on the way to a possible success for this combo. Lebron and Wade also play similar styles of game but they had figured out a way to play together, and they even complement each other pretty well. Bron and Wade both sacrificed their own personal stats one way or another, to some extent, as well as their salaries in order to play together and to win championships, but there's no such motive for the hypothetic Kobe/Melo combo because Kobe already has 5 rings while Melo doesn't care about winning at all.

Now Howard has him in swats, but you would think Houston would be some sort of defensive juggernaut but they're not. Houston is next to last in the NBA, giving up 105.9ppg (v. Knicks surrendering only 99.3ppg). Melo's PER is higher as well.

Bottom line, Melo is basically giving New York 26/10 from his SF/PF position. That's big time. I'd gladly take that type of production on the Lakers. Especially as a stretch 4 in MDA's system.
