But, wasn't there a scientific consensus that sharks don't get cancer?
Falsification is a bitch.

that's near adelaide...
interestingly enough there's a mining boom going on there and a cage diving center at port lincoln nearby that chums the water to attract the sharks.
i wonder if the chum is contaminated with something...or it could be due to the increased human activity in the area. there are also seals in the area that eat local shit.

There is no scientific evidence that shark cartilage is useful in treating or preventing cancer or other diseases.[1][2] Controlled trials have shown no benefit to shark cartilage supplements,[3] and shark cartilage contains potentially toxic compounds linked to Alzheimer disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.[4][5] However, shark cartilage supplements remain popular on the basis of the misconception that sharks do not get cancer, popularized in the 1992 best-selling book Sharks Don't Get Cancer.
So No there was/is not.
But there are marine myths that are popular.

Reminds me of that movie where Samuel J Jackson tells all the scientists trapped underwater "WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT" right before the shark comes out of nowhere and eats him.
They were researching a cure for Alzheimers using shark dna, iirc.
