Same thing happened when Krispy Kreme first came to Austin. Fat fags were driving up north to get some and bring them back down. Then they opened in town and the fat tubs went even more crazy. Now? Meh. Overrated.
Yeah, I'm just getting it to see what the big deal is tbh. If I don't like it I probably won't go back. I remember people making a big deal of Chris Madrids so I went but didn't really think it lived up to the hype--haven't gone back.

In-N-Out is a cult thing here in Cali--It's rather good for the price you pay as you can safely buy three combo meals and spend less than $20. I live down the street from one of the original In-N-Outs and you can wait upwards to 30 mins at the place. I normally go with the Animal Style w/circle onion and chopped banana peppers. I would choose it over Five Guys and any other moderately priced fast food, but it wouldn't be the first choice of burger if I had to pick. That would go to Father's Office, Umami, or Slater's 50/50. Congregation Ale House has a Kobe beef or Wagyu beef burger that is definitely worth the try.

Yeah, I don't get it. I love Whataburger. I tried In N Out and thought it was okay but absolutely nothing to write home about. It's just another fast food burger. I've heard of G Burger in the O.C., but I haven't been out there yet. I would also recommend The Counter, too. The Habit could be compared to your guys' Whataburger, I think? I would recommend going to Father's Office and Umami first and Slater's 50/50 if you're really hungry or are planning on working out hard if you're in the SoCal area. They use a burger which is 50% beef (sirloin and other types) and 50% bacon ground up. You also have a plethora of custom-made sauce and toppings that you can add to really give you indigestion and a coronary!

Tried the In n Out that just opened on Airport Blvd in Austin last night around 7:30. Had it when I've been out west - was looking forward to a high quality burger. Was disappointed. Fries tasted like the shoestring potatoes you get in a can / pringles (reconstituted, not real), burger was burnt. Lettuce was yellow and bitter. This burger would have had trouble beating DQ, much less whataburger or pterrys.
Tried it again w/ a friend today. Burger was better, but something is still off about the fries.

'Well Done' means crispy to the point they're not the typical In-N-Out fries. I don't particularly like the fries normally from In-N-Out so I usually get them well done with cheese on them or I just share with my other half.

It was a wife & husband thing for the first 45-50 years and when they both died, there was a huge war over who'd have control since the couple didn't have any biological kids. I believe it was between the niece and CFO and they're varying ideas of how the corporation should head in the 21st century. The niece wanted to expand eastward and make it a national chain and the CFO had the vision of keeping the In-N-Out a western chain with the emphasis on California being the hub and main point of its existence. It got pretty heated and went through lawsuits and I believe the niece won out and so you have the expansion of the name. Which, I am sure, has made the product less the once proud icon of California living and another branch of chain manifestation that seems to be archaic with a trend of restaurants seeking to be smaller in scale.

In N Out fries are lousy. I'll have to try them well done with the cheese & peppers though. That doesn't sound too bad. Surprised to hear the quality of their burger was so shitty at that Austin location. Sad if expansion kills the golden goose with them. They resisted expansion so long, but I think the owner died 2-3 years ago and the kids took over, and I'd hate to see them end up like the Lakers did when the same shit happened tbh.
My order was perfect on friday at 5. Shit was delicious

I'll try them well done next time. Funny though - when I was in LA I never specified well done and every time they were about as perfect as that type of fry could be.

I think it depends on when you get 'em--I have gotten the fries during the dinner rush and they don't seem to be on point. However, getting them late (a sin; I know) after like 11pm here in Cali they're way better.

In general I've only ever had optimal In-N-Out fries in Southern California locations. My old Pasadena In-N-Out had the best fries ever; perfect and super fresh. Ordering them well done seems to make up for a lot of sins, but the fries definitely have been the thing to suffer most from the chain's expansion.

After trying In-n-out multiple times, at different times of day, and varying up the order (trying animal style burger, well done fries, no cheese to taste the flavor of the burger better, etc), I'm out. It's just not as good as I remember in LA. Tonight the tomatoes were mealy, the lettuce was bitter and yellow, and the fries still taste like something out of a can. After 5 visits, the only thing I've had that I want to have again is the vanilla shake.
P. Terry's Burger Stand (they're only in Austin but are a similar, simple menu burger concept with about half a dozen locations) outclasses In-n-out in just about every way. It is a tastier burger: bigger patty, better quality toppings, wheat bun option. Thin cut, skin-on fries that actually taste like fried potatoes. A ground chicken burger and a veggie burger that are both excellent as well. And the Maine Root milkshake can hold it's own against the In-n-out shake.
I'll still swing by In-n-out when I'm in LA, but they can't deliver anything better than an average burger experience in Austin.
It's a burger. Have never understood how people can seriously dissect fast food tbh.

Speaking of In-N-Out.....I read that the tentative location here in SA is at 410 and McCullough, across from Northstar Mall (the strip center where TGIF and Sam Ash are). That makes no sense at all to me with the kind of traffic In-N-Out generates---that has to be one of the shittiest parking lots in all of SA to begin with; I just can't see it without razing the entire strip center first.

Without one of those kids/Jim we're light 2 NBA World Titles. This morning you're light 1. tee, hee.
& I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with In&Out

I still just go to Short Stop on their special days -- combo for under $5 and no maddening wait. Folks here have gone overboard with supposedly fancy burgers.

In-N-Out is far from fancy--but it isn't worth the wait regardless.

I think their system is shit, just have a regular waitstaff. Too many businesses these days cultivate lines to show how popular they are.

Coincidentally I was at HopDoddy in Dallas this weekend. Great burger, fries AND Maine Root craft sodas! The wait on Sunday afternoon was not bad.

It's strange to me that a hamburger joint would choose not to serve all their fries well done. I mean why would anyone want under done fries? Unless in this case "well done" means "over done", then yea, it's a matter of taste.
Apparently you've never heard of "shoestring potatoes" which are quite popular in stores across the nation.

Yes I've heard of shoestring potatoes :rolleyes. But what does that have to do with the level of "doneness"? Any shape/cut of potato can be overdone, underdone or well done.

Super crispy (and super greasy I might add), to the point of ridiculous IMHO.
But it all goes to show, since they are well liked, that one persons poison is another persons pie.
"Doneness" is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, the mouth of the taster.
:lol
Personally, I can't stand the taste or consistency of how frozen fried potatoes come out. I prefer fresh cut and long French fries like you get at places like Chester's or Chris Madrids.
That is the way I make them at home.

I'm not a big fan of a fancy burger. Nothing makes me crazier than eating a meal with a bunch of pretentious hipsters (which is why I avoid Torchy's Tacos here as well - their slogan might as well be "We fry avocado for hipster douchebags"). And if I'm going to wait for a burger, it will be at Counter Cafe, Chris Madrid's or the original Fuddruckers (if it's still there - haven't been in years).
However, I do think it's worth discussing a burger chain that has built it's reputation on an affordable, very high quality product; and if that product actually delivers. Comparing it to a local Austin chain that is also passionate about quality and affordability (as I know Patrick Terry is) I also think has merit.

Yeah, I am much more likely to go to the sit-down P-Terry's on Parmer or outside on Lamar when I'm there. I just really hate waiting around in my car.
The Torchy's up here on Spicewood Springs is relatively hipster free, thank God.

Really? I'll have to give it a try. I honestly was so turned off by the atmosphere last time I was at one I'm sure it lowered my opinion of the food. It's going to be hard to dislodge TacoDeli as my favorite breakfast / lunch taco joint, but I'll give that Torchy's a shot.

You been to the Veracruz trailer on Caesar Chavez? It's quite good, excellent tacos but they can be overzealous with cilantro (i am one of the 30% who tastes it as soap.

The only decent place I've found to eat good Mexican food in Austin is Dario's on East 6th St.
