Rudy Gay has a 19 million player option next year :lol

I don't absolutely hate it for the Kings though. They obviously fucked up signing Vazquez when Isaiah Thomas is clearly the best point guard on the team, and I've been criticizing them all season for continuing to give that fuck John Salmons 25+ minutes per game. Patterson and Hayes were just taking space as well.

Ujiri is a genius, tbh..trading Bargnani and Gay in the same year is legendary, tbh..

Next move will be to fire Casey in the off-season and find a trade for Fat Lowry..

Raptors have been significantly worse when Gay is on the floor, tbh..

This trade doesn't change anything from a tank perspective, and aids in building for the future..

tbqh my first impression was it was bad but not THAT bad, but thats just because i've been confused at the playing time vazquez and salmons were getting, so unloading them made sense. the longer i thought about rudy faggot though, the more i hate the move.

HarlemHeat37
12-08-2013, 08:17 PM
It's not a bad trade for Sacramento, tbh..

Rudy Gay is the perfect player to acquire if you're trying to tank while simultaneously camouflaging your intentions towards your casual fans, tbh..there are still many people that believe Gay is a good basketball player and continue to neglect his actual contributions and abilities..

They didn't lose any notable assets, and Gay will allow them to continue tanking..his contract also expires following next year IIRC..it's a good PR move and it could help add some buzz with the casual fans in Sacramento..

Knowing Gay, though, he'll probably improve his play and help Sacramento win enough games to reach the 10th or 11th seed, essentially killing their tanking plan, tbh:lol..he's the face of mediocrity..

It's really not that big of a deal either way IMO (for the Kings). They can make a playoff push this year (although we all know Gay isn't as good as he was ever advertised) & Gay's contract is only one more year past this year. It's not a Joe Johnson type contract (and that's assuming he's opting in which he likely will).

If he opts out, they actually came out ahead, although that is extremely unlikely. Even if he doesn't, assuming they extended the QO's to PP & GV with Hayes' 6M guaranteed, they are only adding about 6M in additional salary for one year. It's really not that big of a deal IMO. They lose their cap space flexibility more than likely for one year, but if they didn't like that FA class, nothing wrong with trying to swing for the fences on a one year deal.

spurraider21
12-08-2013, 08:29 PM
salmons is the 34 year old fuck who hasn't been good for 3 years and was still getting 25 minutes a game on a team with young guys begging for minutes. his ass needed to be dumped a while back, or at least benched

DPG21920
12-08-2013, 08:30 PM
For TOR it makes sense obviously. If they can maximize cap space (if they renounce PP & GV, waive Salmons for his 1M only guarantee) they gained ~13M next year in cap space. Plus, Gay was the epitome of everything wrong with TOR and previous management.

PP and GV are also decent little prospects/players, so maybe they could be had for cheap as bench pieces which isn't bad either. But they should trade DeRozan too.

I don't see why Sacramento would do this, lol Raptors are becoming a respectable franchise with these kinds of trades, Ujiri really is a boss.

Absolutely agree - said so all last year when he was putting up those numbers. However, they may view him as a decent prospect, especially if they view him as a bench player/limited role guy vs a starter.

Really no such thing as an un-tradeable contract in the NBA since there will be Billy King type GMs in the league to bail teams out tbh. But to be able to trade Bargs and Rudy within months should be enough for GM of the year IMO. Huge props to Ujiri.

More time for Jonas and Ross should help as well. Keep Casey around until the end of the season to ensure the tank for Wiggins + extra cap space and Raptors' future looks MUCH better tbh.

DPG21920
12-08-2013, 10:20 PM
IMO it's not that hard to trade guys with short term contracts, even if they are overpaid. Especially if they possess any skill at all and are at all marketable to the casual fan.

I get why TOR did the move, but they didn't get some haul. No really great prospects or picks. Just cap space. It's not that amazing of a deal, although it's a good one. The Bargs trade was better because he got a first rounder, but Bargs contract isn't a long one either. I will wait to see what he does with the cap space/picks before really lauding him. But as of now, he's done a very smart and disciplined job.

Not giving up any picks/notable prospects is pretty impressive considering most teams would demand that when taking on a bloated contract.

Not even a bad deal for the Kings at first glance IMO but Boogie and Gay on the same team should be interesting to say the least tbh. Also, Rudy strikes me as the type of guy dumb enough to decline the option for next season and chase a long term contract from a team like the Lakers tbh.

That's my point - it's really not bloated when it's just for one year and especially when it's possible he could opt out. If he opts out, that's a huge win for the Kings. They would have actually cleared more cap space than TOR if Gay opts out (I cannot imagine he would do that though). Usually, when you are salary dumping "the better player" you don't have to give up picks as well. You normally get them (like in the Bargnani trade).

Construction of their new arena will probably happen twice as fast with Rudy Gay providing so many bricks.

Still hard to believe that Memphis give Rudy Gay a max contract.
In 2009 Gay's side wanted 5 years $60 million, the Grizzlies wanted to pay 5 years $50 million so no deal was done that year.

One year later when he was a restricted free agent, and for some reason Heisley and company panicked and gave him 5 years and i think $84 million (don't remember the exact number, but I do know it was in the 80s) before there was even an offer from another team. I thought Rudy played alright in 09-10, but it's not like the guy played out of his mind or anything.

FWIW I think that Rudy peaked in 2008 tbh.

when rudy gay was the best player in memphis, many people thought he would join the Lakers (following Pau's path) since the grizzlies were widely considered a feeder team to the Lakers. Lakers can still get Rudy gay imho, as a plan B if their plan A (Melo) fails. Melo and Gay play similar styles of game imho, never play D and can't pass for shit.
