Isn't it well spent?

Jimmy probably already tripled that figure in merchandise sales.

What it does show, however, is that Jimmy isn't committed to winning, putting profits above all else.

Expect him to blow payroll on Carmelo next year, another "superstar" who will move a ton of merch and sell tickets, especially when the Lakers PR department hypes the shit out of him next summer.

It's okay for the organization, but not the fans. The latter means nothing to every NBA team at the end of the day.

Kobe's market value is probably halved after this game against raptors imho. die hard kobe fans will still pay $$$ for his shoes and jerseys and the rights to continue licking his dick, while the bellweather fans are quitting his bandwagon already. Kobe used to be the hinge for this team in finance & popularity among fans while the team was underachieving for the past 2-3 years, but the hinge was snapped last night just as briskly as his achilles did earlier this year tbh.

Melo is not a winner. I don't think he can coexist with a half beta like Kobe. If Kobe hands over the reigns, he'll be Laker. But despite his age, Kobe has way too much ego for an athlete. Unlike other franchise players, he didn't even blink in his contract negotiations. Heck even Tom Brady (in his prime mind you) had the team's interest before his.
