Have Local Schools Become Supply Nazis?

Fernandez Elementary School specifies in its school supply list that parents bring 'number two pencils NOT MADE IN CHINA.' Boone Elementary says not any kind of glue will do, students must bring ELMER'S BRAND glue.

So what's the deal? Why have area school districts suddenly turned into supply Nazis?

Many parents say school districts who have become very nit picky when telling parents what they should have for their kids on the first day of school need to get a life.

"You know what, a school supply is a school supply, and I'll buy whatever I want," one woman with kids in the Northside School District told 1200 WOAI news.

Others said they're amazed that the lists of school supplies are so long. Some elementary schools have placed twenty items on their lists of supplies.

"I don't recall going out with my parents to buy this many school supplies when I was in school," said one woman in the New Braunfels ISD. "It was just pencils, paper, and rulers."

But the schools districts say there is method to their nit picking madness. Pascual Gonzales of Northside says many of the specific requirements were included in response to parents requests.

"Parents want to know specifically what they need to provide their child with as far as school supplies go," he said.

"You need to remember, when we ask for a 'spiral notebook,' that could be a fifty page book, that could be a 500 page book."

He says the lists are often meant to discourage students trying to top one another with the most brightly decorated notebooks or biggest calculators. And he says requests for specific types of glue are in there for very real reasons.

"Glue is not glue. There is all different kinds. And obviously the teachers and the schools have decided that they don't want the type of glue that runs off the paper and runs onto the desks or onto the students' clothing."

Gonzales and other school officials say they will not punish or send home students who appear in clash August 22nd with Borden's glue instead of Elmers.

"We'll work with them," he said.

whne i went to school (in another state) all i needed was a backpack, notebooks or trapper keeper, folders and pencils.

hell, if I ran out of pencils I could get more from the teacher. the school provided everythign else.

Meanwhile my 7yr old brother just got his list and I was looking over it... he has to bring his own markers, crayons, scissors, glue (2 kinds), pencil boxes, sharpeners, 2 boxes of pencils, notebooks, notebook paper, construction paper, hole punch..... etc etc etc. OMG. I'm gonna spend so much dough on this crap that I'll end up gettign his school clothes form the Goodwill.

That's just bullshit. If the schools want to demand a certain brand, they can supply it for the kids. Maybe the schools would like to collect a small, reasonable fee and they can do the supply shopping. I'm sure there are quite a few parents who would be happy to give up the supply shopping trip.

I don't even disagree all that much with the problem of schools having to require certain items, but the schools can't pay for extra classes, much less supplies for every student.

Now, I really dislike NISD, I mean really, and I don't necessarily believe that there's a dick-wagging contest going on between who's noteobok is better.

Does the list specifically state that outrageously designed notebooks are not allowed? I doubt it.

Pascual talks out of his ass with everybody; the media, the district, employees and parents. I can't wait for the day that he has to resign based on some NISD scandal.

My major problem with this story is the lack of objectivity in the reporting. It's not helping the cause of dispelling bias or sensationalism when people see this from their TV news stations.

Some of them do, but it's not by setting the supply lists. That's done by the grade's teachers as a whole.

I'm not speaking for the district, but every chinese pencil I ever used was wax and would break fairly easily.

So much for impartiality in covering a news story, huh?I see the point the school is conveying by not having one student have better supplies than another. But that seems a bit obnoxious I dont remember being in school telling another kid he got his glue from the dollar store.

I went to the school I used to work at and the list doesn't seem to be too picky IMO.

The PDF is funky, so it won't let me copy directly from it without formatting issues.

The fact that kids may judge each other by what kind of school supplies they have is ridiculous. So what if my kid has "RoseArt" markers and crayons and not "Crayola"?
This year my oldest daughter doesn't have to wear uniforms and the big battle of the "in" clothing has started.
You all know my cheap ass and the fact that some kids are "label freaks" is alarming because I don't give a whoot about brands. I don't need to wear Tommy, Sean Jean, Nike, Adidas, IPod, American Eagle or what ever other Mall store kids shop at these days.

I tell her to be herself and not to give in to the label freaks. But I know there will be peer pressure and maybe some teasing but I think I'm doing the right thing.

Sure, if you want to buy a supplement.

But the argument by some is that humans aren't supposed to drink milk. I guess we're supposed to eat an assload of green vegetables, then, because calcium citrate tablets weren't around 6,000 years ago.

Well, a 1/2 cup of broccoli has about 1/8 the calcium as an 8 oz glass of milk, 300mg to about 38mg. As much as I would like everyone to eat a trailerload of pecans each, they have a lot more zinc in them than calcium.

The specifying of certain brands is very simple. Those brands WORK! I'm sure people with parents or even the average person in here that has walkded down a school supply isle know the amount of CRAP that is out there. There are tons of brands and gimmiky supplies that are really just junk. There are parents out there that don't really look into what they buy for their kids and end up getting a bunch of either crappily made or poorly designed stuff that just ends up being a big hassle for the teachers. So the districts make lists and specify a certain brand or type of supply so this doesn't happen again and again. Elmers glue works, and sure there are other brands that do too. The problem is when a kid comes to class with some weird brand of sparkle glitter glue shit that either doesn't come out of the bottle right, or stains the hell out of everything it touches. Scissors that don't cut, markers that dry out, backpacks that fall apart, are all examples of why certain brands are listed. Now certainly parents can make up their own minds on what to buy, but what is the horror over taking some good advice from some people who have seen this year after year? Buy what ever you want, but when little Jimmy or Sally come home crying that the Mother's Day card they made you self destructed because of some shitty glow in the dark, glitter, scratch and sniff glue you bought them didn't work worth a damn, don't start complaining. Elmers was on the list.

Actually they do....well, the PTA at my kids' school does it. You just put your name on the list and pay whatever the price was, and they'll have it in your child's teacher's room by the first day of school.

Just an FYI to those bitching about HAVING to get ELMER'S glue:

They are FIVE FOR A DOLLAR.

The funny thing is that the list will always ask for the size that is not on sale. They ask for the 8 oz bottle of glue that costs almost $2. I buy the 4 oz on sale for 0.25 and give my kid 2 bottles. Crayons too......they ask for the 16 count which is $1.00 and the 24 count is on sale for 0.25. So I send my kid to school with extra crayons.
