View Full Version : Would a 2014 LOB really erase what was already lost?

When you think about the finals in 2013, I used to think winning one more for Timmy this year would erase last year's heartbreak... but would it really?
Think about the circumstances. We were undefeated in the finals going into 2013. We were looked at as the squad that always found a way to win the title and were "unbeatable" due to our fundamentals and the, even then older Timmy Duncan playing clutch as hell in the finals. We would have been 5-0 in the finals, with Duncan and Pop leading the way. Ginobili and Parker would have had their fourth. A dynasty would have been solidified. LeBron would have been 1-3 in the finals, and wouldn't have been this polarizing figure like he is now. LeBron would never be placed ahead of Timmy D in the all-time rankings.
Duncan would have been going for his 6th title this year, tying MJ.
Duncan, Ginobili and Parker each had their fantastic game in the finals (Duncan's being emotional). Once I saw him drop 25 points like we've seen him do all too many times in clutch games, I thought it was over.
So my question to you is, does the 2014 title (if we win) really make up for what was lost in 2013?
To me it is so much more than the title, but that our big 3's legacy was actually damaged a good bit. Not the same being 5-0 in the finals as it is being 4-1.

no, nothing will erase the pain of losing the 2013 finals even if the Spurs went on to win back to back titles. However its over, its done with, there is nothing any of us can do to change it, the only thing you can do is move forward and try and win it all this year. I believe this Spurs team is doing that

What pisses me off even more is that the Spurs had the chance to stop all of the LBJ ****sucking. Can't even turn on the TV without seeing about 45 different LBJ commercials. Makes me sick.

Yeah, it'll help. 5-1 is way better than 4-1, especially considering Kobe has five

99 didn't erase the heartache of watching the Rockets hoist the trophy in the mid nineties. A LOB this year would be tremendous but I don't think I'll ever be able to watch a replay of the end of game 6 without feeling at least a little punch in the gut.

For us as fans yes, but for other fans of other teams in sports I am sure they can relate to something similar if they are fans enough.
I won't forget it but a trophy sure as HELL would go a long ways of easing that sting up.

That would have been a threepeat! If you want to feel even worse if Manu doesn't foul Dirk on that play (I know Manu went off and the only reason we had the lead late but) the Spurs could and probably would have won 4 damn titles in a row :( I seriously doubt we beat the Pistons that year though becuase they were on a flat out roll (We did not have Nazr yet who helped alot vs them or Barry) so the Spurs would probably have lost a finals alot earlier and they would probably just have threepeated after. 4 titles in a row was definitely possible though.

What was "lost" in the NBA is the common occurrence. It's what happens to 29 out of 30 teams every season.
IMO, what needs to be appreciated is the uncommon, or, in other words, what was won... which is no slouch :lobt2::lobt2::lobt2::lobt2:

Yep. To think nearly a decade later we'd still be competing for a title with the same core is just amazing. Some don't know how good we've had it man. Whether we win another one or not, i've been spoiled as a fan to have a team that knows how to play basketball the right way.

Technically, the Spurs should have 8 titles: 99, 03-07, 12 and 13.
Nothing in life ever works out the way it ideally should. 4 out of 8 isn't bad. One more would be perfect closure.

Last year is honestly devestating if you think about it, but I choose not to. I didn't look at NBA very much at all until august last year, it just stung. But winning it this year would more than make up for it. It would probably be our most emotional championship yet and, considering the advanced age of our big 3, probably our hardest.

AS a fan know it will not and I admit it has faded some but it still stings when I think about sports. If it ruins your daily life or part of it you have problems though.
No, and a win is extremely unlikely as constructed, the other contenders are running a train on the Spurs if you haven't noticed, and Chuckbrook is healthy...

C'mon guys: I think that it's time that we stop feeling sorry for ourselves because the Spurs didn't win last year's Finals. I mean, it sucks that our team didn't come out on top, but that series was, as a pure basketball fan, an absolute joy to watch. When Game 7 ended, I was sad that the Spurs didn't win, but I was almost as sad that the series was over: I wanted more of Spurs vs. Heat awesomeness! I know that I'm not the only one on this board that has good memories from watching that series, and if you don't have the same feelings as I do, you still have four titles to look back on fondly.
And as for the original question, yes, it would take some sting out; a title for your favorite team always does. I just hope that it's a Finals rematch.

It may but still won't forget that Game 6. Even if we one next year, we'll still say that Timmy should've 6. Worst is, we may not win it next year.
Yeah I agree it's one of the painful loss in sports history. I wished Heat had blown-out the Spurs in Games 6 & 7. The fact that we are free throw and rebound away, it really can't get out of my head. I may be "emo" or "drama queen" but seeing Duncan losing like that, it breaks my heart. Spurs has been part of my childhood life. They always brings hope every year no matter, they teach us to believe despite of having big limitations. I learned how to love basketball because of the Spurs, heck in a way Spurs taught me how to play basketball fundamentally (because I'm not gifted in terms of athleticism). I even won individual awards in a amateur league because of them.

It was absolutely devastating. Duncan had 21 points and 21 rebounds. His last shot was the definition of clutch. Fishers shot shouldn't have counted. If Ray Allen needs .3 seconds to get a shot off how could Fisher get a shot off in .4 while needing to turn to get his shot off. Even though it was the second round, it was nearly as crushing of a defeat as game 6.
We would have taken a 3-2 lead heading to L.A. If we would of closed out we would have played Minnesota and Detroit (who we beat the following season in the Finals).

IMHO, last season's Finals loss wasn't as bad as .4 because the Heat were the favorites and they beat the Spurs fair and square. That "miracle" .4 shot in 2004 should not have counted. It was total BS. At least the Pistons assraped the Lakers in the Finals that year, so Fisher's shot ended up being meaningless for the Lakers in the end.

Funny stat I read on here a while back was that no team that beat the Spurs in the playoffs went on to won the championship. up until this June ofc

.04 is noone's fault. we were cheated. if u look at that play frame by frame, they didn't start the clock until fisher had released the ball from his hands. in .4 seconds, he was able to catch the ball, turn around and THEN fade away. shit is impossible. go ahead and look at the play in slow motion. we would have gone up 3-2, won game 6 after that, beat the shit out of the timberwolves and beat the pistons..

I can't stop watching the end of Game 6. Last night I watched the last 5 minutes of regulation. Several things I noticed:
1) We had 5.6 seconds to drive full court and win it at the buzzer. Tim Duncan was wide-open running down the lane while Tony Parker was busy dribbling down to the corner and throwing up a prayer. Admittedly it would have been a risky pass to make, but if he had got it to TD, TD would have laid it in or dunked it for the Championship.
2) Ginobili shot his first free throw that he missed REALLY FAST when we were just up 3. On the second one, he took his time and drained it, but it was shocking to see how casual he shot the first one. Leonard missed his first free-throw too, but took his time, and didn't miss nearly as badly as Ginobili missed his. It was as if Ginobili thought we had already won...
3) Leonard HAD that rebound that the Heat eventually got and which led to the Lebron 3 to get it to 94-92. But Boris Diaw knocked it out of his hands. It's hard to be mad at Diaw for going after a rebound, but there's no way Leonard doesn't secure it if Diaw doesn't interfere. And it was Leonard's rebound, as he had boxed out Wade and was in position. Diaw came flying in from under the basket to try to get it.
4) Danny Green was under the basket when Bosh rebounded the missed Lebron 3 and kicked it out to Allen for the game tying 3. Basically, he just watched Lebron shoot and just stood there, not even thinking to box out Bosh or even try to secure the rebound.
5) Ray Allen DID travel on the game tying 3. He took 3, count em, 3 steps back to get to the 3 point line and get set. There's no 'technically' about it. He 100% did travel.
Fuck, I hate threads like this. Reminds me of an agonizing three week span this summer tbh.

I do not know if we beat the Pistons TBH! We needed Nazr and Barry the next year to beat them in 7. The Pistons team in 04 was actually on their top level and better than the 05 team IMO, they were at their peak and would not be easy to beat by any means the way they were playing. It is possible but we had TRASHO and who else out there to spell Tony? We got alot better with Nazr and Barry a year later.

I tried that in a video game a few times, that shot to catch and shoot like he did is impossible, period. I think outside of LA fans will agree with that. What he did with the turn and shoot motion is just not possible, period.

You all need to get LAID. Pansies all of you. At the end of the day, you just hope that your team competes to the best of their ability, and whatever happens...happens. We may not like the result, but that's SPORT for you. The favorites don't always win, neither does the best team. It just works out that way sometimes.
Should they get 5, I'm happy as hell, because when I first became a Spurs fan, no one thought they'd win 1, the fact that they got 4 and STILL got a chance to win 5 in the Duncan era, is bad ass.
