View Full Version : Lakers: Why didn't the Lakers just heist some idiot GM for their young talent via a Kobe...

trade?

Look, I'm not gonna sit here and shit on the Mamba, but Kobe makes no sense in a run-and-gun system. Now with his vertical and quickness all but shot, Kobe can only operate from the post. Sadly, Kobe's style of game is becoming archaic in the new "speed kills" NBA, as pretty much all post-player's games are. Bigs are now used to "space the floor" for guard/wing penetration (look how many 7 footers now need to have a jumpshot).

I know Jimbo licks his lips over the merch the Kobe brand moves, but Lakers fans, at least the ones I know, will not tolerate losing for very long until they start calling for heads to roll. And this Lakers team as currently constructed is an abomination of mixed match parts. And no, Carmelo won't save jackshit.

The smart move would've been to trade Kobe to a middling franchise for draft picks/young talent. Some owner/GM would've taken Kobe, busted Achilles or not, just on his name alone and for the potential ticket/merchandise sales, which dipshit Buss is milking Kobe for.

New school Lakers fans (e.g., LG Posters) will reason that Kobe's contract was a well deserved severance for the 5 rings he won, paid out of love and loyalty (no, Buss gave Kobe that contract because of how much the Kobe brand is worth, at the expense of winning, which should have Lakers fans in an outrage). Old school Lakers fans, who have seen greats come and go, aren't about that shit and can see the writing on the wall.

Kobe really is dead weight, even if regains some of this old form. His game is at odds with the way D'Antoni wants to play and the direction the NBA has taken in the last few years that has all but marginalized the post-game.

If the Lakers were willing to move Kobe (and Gasol) at the right time for the right players, they would be gunning for the playoffs (or at least have some lottery picks to look forward to). But Jimbo put the dollar above all else, and preferred a "star-studded" roster to one that would actually make sense for the coach he hand-picked.

You know some GM out there would've bit.

Hell, if I was the owner of the Bucks or something, I'd give Kobe 25 million a year to sell 100 million worth of merch to bean3rs and chinks, and fill the arena every night.

Then you'd just be the new Fredo or Dolan, tbh.... winning sells more reliably than anything else, tbh....

Kobe has a no trade clause. If there was some scrub team that was actually dumb enough to send talent and picks for Kobe, I'm sure that wouldn't exactly be one of the team's on Kobe's list he'd waive the NTC for

Of course. But I own the Bucks. And since my franchise never wins, Kobe and the profit he'd bring would be like dropping mana from heaven into my bank account.

Well I look at it like the Lakers had two choices. One was to keep Kobe, pay him at absurd amount and just get through the season. That choice would have them making a decent profit. The other choice was to release Kobe, get pretty much shit for that money and still have a poor season regardless except now they lose a lot of money in merchandising. There's just no decent talent available right now and trying to get into the draft lottery and hoping to get good talent is a crap shoot at best. It is certainly not worth the Kobe brand name.

whats the point of the rapists selling 100m of merchandise if he doesnt get a % of it? hence the lakers dont even get the whole thing, when its equally divided among the teams in teh league revenue sharing....

There is a lot of other merchandise that Kobe sells. You have to think of the TV contract as well. The Lakers want to continue to provide something for that other than a group of scrubs.

You have 6, we have Kobe. If I could switch places I'd stay with Kobe. It does no good to trade him on speculation, only on reality. And at reality we won't want to trade him, OR, nobody will want him. No, we have to see this to the end. There is no sense in trading Bryant on speculation in a league that is buried in symbolism. Bryant has done it. Every living soul save Bryant, Nowitski the Spurs and Heat have been shining shoes and cashing checks their entire career.

You exhaust the contracts, sit down with the money and spread it out on the table next to the list. Don't fuck it up though, there are no more do-overs. Cuban saw to that.

***In the meantime? I'll handle the 28 others.

Let us proceed...

midnightpulp, and exactly when was the last time the Lakers made the smart move? It's almost as if after the veto, everything went downhill in decision making (I'll give some credit in getting rid of Bynum for the chance of obtaining Dwight long term...both are cancers tbh)

I'm just an average 'quasi logical' NBA fan and even I would have

1) Hired Phil Jackson, he would have easily helped mature Dwight. Phil's speciality is in gaining confidence from immature morons like this and making something special out of them,

2) Start building the bench and rebuilding the starters as well, surround Dwight with some niece young pieces.

3) Aim for 2014-2015. With a 'mature' Dwight with proper coaching and a shot at Kevin Durant and a few more peices+ Phil Jackson, the team would have been primed for a championship.

I dont like Dwight but I know Phil could have helped him calm the F down with his tactics. Overall, I think Jim Buss is an idiot and only thinking of the $.

Jackson didn't want to coach. He didn't want to coach the last 2 seasons he coached.
Howard is a loser. He's been loitering the NBA for almost decade and still hasn't found his game.

Of course you think Jim Buss is an idiot because Media has bull whipped you there. But, without Jim Buss we're short 2 and sittin' at 14 and 4-3 respectifively. Jim Buss insisted on drafting Bynum. Jim Buss insisted on not trading Bynum when Kobe demanded it.

I find it commendable that you stay loyal to people who made key decisions (or plays, as in the case of players) that contributed Lakers' championships, but ever since Buss made the wise decision to draft Bynum, he's been stuck-on-stupid ever since.

No. Jim Buss also was adamant that he would not trade Bynum when Kobe insisted.

See, you piss away 2 NBA Titles like they're nothing, like they grow on trees. It's so stupid it's amazing. It'd be like me casting Pop out the fucking door because he was made to go to your trophy case, unlock it, take your 5th NBA Title out and surrender to NBA Officials last June.

No, he didn't. He wanted a year-to-year contract. He didn't want to do some road games. He wanted to bring Shaw in as his assistant head coach. If he wanted to coach he'd be coaching. He wants to dabble and play games. We can't do it no more. The rules have changed.

Talk about not buying into the media. Those were all false reports instigated by Jim Buss. Jimmy is clearly the kid from Gladiator that kills his father to take over. He saw that Phil (Russell Crowe) and Jeanie ( the princess) were due to take over his crown and he ridded that process ASAP.

These poor decisions are what ultimately led to all these uncharacteristic changes and les we forget 'the begging'

True, Phil was definitely finding some creative ways and asking for unrealistic conditions to coach the Lakers. I mean, it was suggested that Phil would coach the team from a video conference during half time, and he was asking for a piece of ownership, Phil was done after the sweep in 2010 :lol

Oh, it's false when it's reported against your grain. But, it's the truth when it's reported to your specs. Boiled down:::you can dish it, but, you can't take it.

All those issues that I lodged had been rearing their heads in the preceding years:::he didn't want to travel. he didn't want to sign a long term contract. he wanted to groom Shaw. That was fine when we could cover our ass at 2 to 1 on the penalty for the luxury tax. No big deal. At 7 to 1 it's untenable. There is no room for silly errors that can be easily avoided. Things can't be like they were when the old man was alive and vibrant and the CBA was our security blanket. You need to face that reality. All Laker fans do. We're one of 30 nowPERIOD

I know he has that. But there are ways to convince him to opt out. Appeal to his narcissism. Jimmy could tell him the Lakers are going be in rebuilding mode for the next few years and he deserves to play for a "contender" (some fringe playoff team in the East, like the Hawks or Philly) in his final years.

I'm not even hating here. Kobe makes no sense in D'Antoni's system at this stage of his career. You guys need a young, quick PG, and a stretch 4.

Some dipshit GM would've taken the bait.

Anyhow, I'm just spitballing. I know a move like this would never happen in a million years. But the Lakers do need to shed all their shitbags (Nash, Blake, Gasol, Kaman, and Kobe).

I've admired him as a player since he was 17 and appreciate everything he has done for my favorite team. This new CBA has changed the game for the foreseeable future. He's worth well over $200M (after taxes) so it's not like he needed $48M. He could have taken $10M (or so) per instead of 38.7% of the expected $62M cap.

He was part of the negotiations that led the NBA players out of the lockout - so he knew what was forthcoming. This new CBA is basically neutering that $5M TWC deal the Lakers struck. The new CBA has leveled the playing field quite a bit. Just look at us: all that money and we're playing with a bunch of minimum players that are logging major minutes whereas on most teams they'd only play garbage minutes at best.

He wants #6 so bad but he wasn't willing to sacrifice to help the Lakers field a team that could help him get it. I'm not giving him a pass on this one. Name on the front Cubby. Not the back.
