Oklahoma GOP tax cut axes tornado shelters after storms killed seven students in 2013

A plan to put shelters in schools after seven children died in 2013 from a series of devastating tornadoes has been scrapped because Republican leaders are pushing for corporate tax cuts instead.

The Associated Press reported on Monday (http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/24407520-418/plan-for-school-tornado-shelters-thwarted-by-oklahoma-tax-cut.html) that Gov. Mary Fallin (R) and other lawmakers have called to eliminate a so-called franchise tax that forces corporations to pay $1.25 for every $1,000 invested in the state.

The tax had been temporarily suspended in 2010, but Democratic state Rep. Joe Dorman had called on using the $40 million annual revenue it would generate to fund the tornado shelters.

“That just seemed like the best place to draw the money without hurting the budget,” Dorman told the AP.

Republican leaders, however, have argued that it’s more important to attract businesses to the state by cutting taxes.

When will demonrats stop playing politics?

Brad Henry (D) was the governor, and the senate was also demonrat controlled when they suspended the tax. Now that republicans are in control, they cry foul.

Taxing a corporation based off how much it invests in the state rather than its income in the state is pretty retarded. They should scrap shit like "franchise taxes" altogether and replace them with a corporate income tax that's not a total joke.

I agree to some extent. that extra tax is a part of the decision businesses use as to where to locate, or relocate. That's why I say we shouldn't tax production at all. tax consumption instead.

So OK Repugs would rather cut taxes for their corporate contributors than build tornado shelters for schools? And WC says it's the Dems fault.
