Love to watch those SWAC/Div II/Division III/NAIA/MEAC games. There will usually be somebody out there who will get an NFL look. And they do stand out vs the competition. Imagine Danny Woodhead at Chadron State, hell, I don't even know where that is or what level they play at.
Terrance West has over 2000 yards rushing this season at Towson, saw him play for the first time this season (Junior). He's going to be a great NFL back and you heard about him...here..first. He's one of those 220 pounders with that speed/quicks/power/combo, yep the total package. He'll be on tv again Saturday check him out (probably on youtube).
Woodhead isn't the only solid current NFL back from RinkyDinky State. Chris Ivory is out of Tiffin and the Bill's Fred Jackson played at Coe.
In the history of pro football we've seen a lot of solid to great backs out of small schools.
Clem Daneils...first Raider 1000 yarder, Priarie View
Carl Garrett..."Rookie of the Year" for the Pats, New Mexico Highlands
Charley Tolar...first Oiler 1000er, NWLa.
Emerson Boozer...(Namath's running back in SBIII) Maryland Eastern Shore
Dick Bass...first Ram 1000er, U of Pacific
Stump Mitchell....The Citadel a 1000 yarder for the Cards.
Willie Galimore & Hewritt Dixon...Florida A&M
JD Smith...NCA&T a 1000 yarder for the Niners
Chris Warren...Furman a 1000 yarder for the Seahawks.
Timmy Brown....one of the first great all purpose backs was out of Ball St, he was an Eagle.
Christian "The Nigerian Nightmare" Okoye the great Chiefs back was out of Azusa Pacific.
Mercury Morris and Duane Thomas (there together) both played for West Texas State (a school that's had a dozen pro rasslers)
Mack "The Truck" Lee Hill and Robert "The Tank" Holmes played for Southern U and the Chiefs
Abner Haynes first Chief 1000 yarder. North Texas State.
Willie Ellison a 1000yarder for the Rams out of Texas Southern
Essex Johnson Grambling.
Sid Blanks Texas A&1 (Darrel Green)
Hall of Famers
Walter Payton...Jackson State
Ollie Matson...U of San Francisco...(Olympic 400m/4x4 medalist)
Joe "The Jet" Perry...Compton JC
Leroy Kelly...Morgan State
Marion Mottley...Nevada (considered by some to be the best footballer ever)
The first Cowboy to ever have a 1000 yard season was Calvin Hill out of Yale. The Raiders had Mark Van Eeghan and Marv Hubbard both 1000 yard rushers and both out of Colgate.
First NFL back out of the SWAC was Paul "Tank" Younger, he was a Ram, yep....Tank...fit perfectly. His runing mate there was "Deacon" Dan Towler another bruiser out of Washington and Jefferson (don't get anymore obscure than that)
