I'd have thought The Black Keys too mainstream to be hipster.

In any case, they, Beirut, Sleigh Bells, and Edward Sharpe are still in heavy rotation on my iPod.

Worst? Hipster?
A little redundant, ay?

Hipster is such a stupid/misused term, anyway. I maintain hipsterism has more to do with why you like or don't like things than it does with what you like or don't like.

1. Joy Division.

They were a proto-goth band before they were hipster darlings.

Fun is a hipster band? I thought they were one of those universally reviled, "everybody hates them but somehow they dominate the radio" type of band in the vein of Nickelback (not in music style, just in universal hatred)

^Pretty good...working my way down to there from the Rip Tide album tbh. I recognize a couple of their songs already but just never knew who the artist was.

I've heard of all of them, but I never listened to White Rabbits, Pompaloose (outside of the commercials), tune yards, and Edward Sharpe. Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, and TV on the Radio have earned my respect. Arcade Fire gets a lot of love, but they have some great songs and some shitty songs, too. That's why I can never get behind them. Half their songs are great, and the other half are annoying.

I'm still not sure how we're defining these as hipster bands. Is it because they're supposedly made up of hipsters, or because hipsters supposedly like them?

I like half of these bands. One they should have included was Of Monsters and Men. I've never seen them, but if any band's music sounds like it was recorded by people trying to sound literary while also playing their instruments on unicycles, it's them.

Woo-hoo 33 and not a bit hipster. I don't recognize any of these bands.
But then again, I like relaxed fit men's jeans, so this should come as no surprise

In the article, "hipster" seems to be synonymous with "annoys the LA Weekly writing staff for various and sundry reasons."

It's not like "hipster" has any meaning anymore. People basically define it as "something I don't like, never heard of or both".

CuckingFunt
12-22-2013, 09:57 PM
Not sure "hipster" ever had any meaning beyond that.

I was calling people hipsters before the term got so mainstream and vague.

Arcade Fire is 'hipster'? Maybe because I'm Canadian but they've always felt kinda mainstream.

Not an exclusive definition but any band with over five members, male and female, all white with beards and sundresses who yell "Hey!" a lot during their songs = hipster.

:lol perfect!

I would also add they have 1 or more members whose sole job is to prance around and hit 2 sticks together.

The Shins are a hipster fav? I was listening to them when I was a teenager (I am 36 now).

Joy Division hipster too? They were old when I was a kid...lol...

I have heard of two bands on that list, but couldnt tell you any songs from any of them.

I consider hipster anybody that is my age, but still dresses and acts like they are not. Mid thirties dudes who wear arcade fire shirts and skinny jeans with pencil mustaches and fedoras...or whatever...

Considering how the douchebags from the Black Keys carry on, i would say they meet your definition to a tee.

The main thing I learned in this thread is that hipster is Mono's favorite word.

Arcade Fire is Richard Jefferson's favorite band, so that must mean whoever listens to them is not only a hipster, but gay as well.
