2014 Fantasy Leagues Focus Group Thread

Gentlemen,

The 2013 season has concluded and I feel like we had a pretty good run for our inaugural season. However, it wasn't smooth sailing the whole time. We had trouble filling out the roster at the beginning and set a lot of shit at the eleventh hour. I want to avoid that next year. I'm a firm believer that a strong foundation builds you a pretty fucking good house. In the old thread, we already started proposing some changes to the league. To keep it more organized, I've started this thread. So far we have discussed the following:

-2013 owners remain in league unless they willingly separate.
-League dues raised from $25 to $100, with 7 of 12 owners already signed off.
-Elimination of lower-tier bonus points for 100 yard games (WR/RB) and 300 yard games (QB).
-Possible elimination of Points Per Reception concurrent to enabling of Partial Scoring (.10 per yard).
-Creation of a secondary high stakes league with a $400 buy in. Weekly prize of $100 to the player with the highest score. Proposal of $5 added to pot for each roster transaction by any owner. 4 of 12 owners signed off at present, first bulletpoint grandfathering in 2013 owners does not apply here.
-Floor is henceforth open to all other owners to propose stat changes and league settings.

If you have any proposals, voice them here. My role as commissioner is to keep people happy and stop people from trading Peyton Manning for Danny Woodhead and Darrius Heywar-Bey.

- Bonus points should be given for 4 touchdown games and 400 yard games for QBs, etc for other positions

- I'd like to see a penalty for QBs that throw at least 3 INTs, tbh..you should be punished for starting a QB that had a shitty game, even if he put up big yardage and a few TDs

fractional points should be added for sure. way less chance of a tie. also keeping the PPR at 1 point allows for a lot more options when drafting. Everyone benefits from the point the same but it also allows the shitty ass RB choices to be that much better. Sooo after getting to the airport too early and having nothing to do here's what needs to be voted on once we get 12:

1) Since we agree there should be PPR to some extent, there's no need to vote on that, we can just skip to whether or not it's 0.5 or 1.0 PPR.
2) Whether or not there should be fractional points

We should have two stages of voting for bonus/penalty points, the first stage for whether or not there should be bonus/penalty points for each of those things, and then a 2nd stage for what the points should be for all things where we voted yes. I agree with J.T. that 300+ yard passing games and 100+ rushing/receiving games are far too frequent and don't merit bonus points but we should still vote on it. Same with Harlem on QBs who throw 3+ INTs, that's a good idea.

To kind of piggy back on Harlem's idea on QB INT's....we made each INT -2 points this year. Seemed to work well, no complaints from anyone.

Picks are -3 in my league. Don't do fractional pts for passing or returning yds. 1 pt/20 yds passing seems to work well, 1 pt/10 yds returning. Make lost fumbles worth -2 or -3. FF's (regardless of recovery) should be +1-2 pts imo.

my input anyway, in my experience, especially in recent years, qb's put up monster points anyway. 25 passing yards per point, 6 for td's, -3 for INT's. i've also seen 4 for passing td's with -2 for INT's. either way, having 2 int's negate a TD seems to make sense. a 1 TD 2 INT game should not be a net positive imo

They already deposited the money in my bank account. Jewing a $5.00 fee was pretty lame but I'd have a hard time believing there's a 3rd party service like that that doesn't charge a withdrawal fee. The fee is well worth it so no one can complain there's internet faggotry going on.

The site did have a random message saying it can only disperse to US banks, so that's probably what happened with Harlem's payment. We can plan around that next year with paypal as the intermediary.

This is an impossible function to add into any of the scoring metrics provided by ESPN.com, Yahoo.com, or NFL.com. If this proposal receives a majority approval it will have to be done with a concurrent proposal to load all stat tracking and league scoring off-site with all numbers being crunched by hand.

Id like to take this chance to reiterate my intentions to stay in the league at the higher $100 dollar rate.

I vote yes to 1.0 PPR. anything less overly marginalizes runningbacks.

I vote Yes to fractional points because ties shouldnt be allowed in fantasy football for money, and all means should be taken to avoid them. Also, football is a game of inches and each yard counts.

6/3 TD/INT is a little high. I vote yes on the condition of keeping 300 yard bonus.

Keep the 100 yard RB bonus. Random RBs get hot every year and this helps keep them as relevant as possible. If you're really worried about too many bonuses being handed out, just lower the bonus point amount for 100/300 rushing/passing and keep the tiered system.

There should be negative points for fumbles if there are negative points for ints. As well as blocked kicks/punts/safeties

Im undecided but leaning toward yes about the $400 league. I would need the rules before deciding.

my experience in auction leagues have been that you get ridiculous steals for 3 dollars late in the draft... if you save yourself something like 15 for your last 5 spots you can be stacked if you pickem right.... but yeah i probably wouldn't throw money at an auction league tbh

Let's shoot for August 30th or 31st. That's Saturday and Sunday of the final week of preseason. If you're a 9-5 schmoe like most of the world, you'll have those days off anyway. If you're not a 9-5 schmoe, I just gave you about three entire months notice to ask for that weekend off. This allows for you to not get burned by anyone getting injured in preseason, because if someone on your fantasy team gets injured in Preseason Week 4, the fuck are you doing drafting practice squad players for your fantasy team?

I'll start trying to get the band back together after the NBA Finals are over since that's when most of the guys around here switch over to NFL mode. We'll finalize the proposed changes in this thread, determine if we need to activate anyone from the waiting list, etc. Should be much smoother getting things set up this year. Last year was a good dry run, but I think with a year of experience under our belts, we know what our league is all about and can just get down to business right away.

Now, as a failsafe to protect against 1st or 2nd place winning the 3rd place prize as well, if the 1st or 2nd place winner is also the Season Points Leader, the 3rd place prize would then revert to the 3rd place finisher. I proposed this earlier in this thread and it looks like only DOK and Lincoln responded to it. I'd like some more input on this from people before I put it up for a vote. -Forced Fumbles on defense is the one stat that is curiously absent on Yahoo. I added the -1 for the offensive player so two lost fumbles would cancel out a touchdown the same way two interceptions does for a QB. However, were we to enable IDP (Individual Defensive Players), forced fumbles IS a stat available to the individual.
-Not in favor of anything that awards more points than necessary to QB's considering most of them can throw 300 yards with their head in a bag.
-Individual scoring for return yards can be done. Make up your mind on "x" yards = 1 point. I'd say 20 is good.

Just want to reiterate that I can't add points for forced fumbles to a team defense even if the entire league voted in favor of it. We can change a recovered fumble to +3 for the team defense so if an offensive player lost the football, the team defense that recovered it was awarded the same amount.

Or just remove the -1 for the fumble itself since there is no forced fumble category on D/ST.

The way I was thinking is that we still do one payout at the end after figuring out how much money each person gets, that way we have the lowest amount of payouts possible. Even if weekly payouts were allowed, it would be dumb to do it weekly since leaguesafe dings you with a fee for every payout.

Also for the scoring settings post I made, all of the values in black text (or whatever your default text color is), are untouchable as we voted on them last year. We did discuss altering PPR and bonus point values earlier in the thread, which is why we are discussing them now. As I was going through the settings, the safety thing came to mind so I included that.

Next year we aren't doing this focus group thing. This is primarily because last year was our "dry run". After Week 1 begins, whatever's in the Yahoo settings is permanent for any future leagues. Unless we were to add IDP, which we would then have to vote on those scoring values but I doubt the inclusion of IDP will pass a vote (even though it's fun as hell).

1. I agree on points leaders. There should be no retribution in the annals of history for third place. However, if 1st or 2nd are points leaders i believe they SHOULD also win the points leaders pot. Its unfair to punish a dominator for dominating.

2. I agree on all scoring settings as currently constructed for red blue and purple.

3. I do agree that missed field goals should be negatively counted but it seems that wont pass the vote.

4. I agree on weekly point leaders. Leads to great monday night finishes.

imo just give -3 for a fumble lost, no points lost for fumbling. an interception is -3, a fumble lost should be -3. if we dont charge qb's negative points for bad passes that should have been picked off, why would we charge a running back for a fumble recovered by the offense anyway.

same goes for defense. 3 points for an interception, 3 points for a fumble recovery. a turnover is a turnover

Because there are only about 5 I trust to be sure things if healthy. IMO, if I can get more sure things at WR (where IMO there is less depth than people give credit to) I feel I can do ok with RB's who all have a shot to be top 15.

:lol I hope so. He was so bad last year it killed my team. TBH, I was waiting until the 6th RD+ for a QB and there was a run on them. I got RGIII in the 7th round and for that I felt he was worth the risk because if (and it's a big if) he can return to form, he's a top 5 QB I got in the 7th rd.

It was between him, romo or wilson and I chose him (plus guys like Cutler/Ben/McCown were available).

Due pretty much everybody but the commissioner getting shit hammered drunk because we started 90 minutes after the advertised time, people took like 5 minutes on each pick and we only finished 12 rounds. Yup, the more I look at it--or, the more I look at other teams--I think I made out alright, all things considered. I figure I'll get a good month out of McFadden before he goes down with his annual injury, maybe 2 games out of Ridley until he lands in BB's doghouse, 1 epic Amendola game before he shatters his collarbone drinking a cup of gatorade, and hopefully some patchwork performances from an aging Gore. A lot of frail bodies on that roster, but decent upside
