More Ayers. More small ball with Leonard at the 4 I'm guessing.

Maybe Thomas will get a shot after all.

Is Ayres really that bad? He's garbage on offense but still not that bad on defense, plus he's a decent rebounder.

He's been competent over the last 4 or 5 games, but the first 20 or so he wasn't even fit for the D league. You could make a montage of all the point blank dunks he's missed this season.

Terrible news. More Ayres/Baynes/Bonner is gonna suck.

Oh and another injury on our team occurs when playing the Clippers.

I don't think Ayers is as bad as many think here. If Pop really believes he'll be useful come playoff time, it's good that he's letting him play through the aches and pains now.

I hope Baynes will see some more minutes though.

Exactly. Ayers needs to get minutes in order to develop. This may pay dividends, Splitter's fake injury....

Blame the Spurs, not the Clippers. They screwed around and let a 37 point lead get down to 13. No starter should of played in the 2nd half.

More Tim of Kawi at the four could be interesting in terms of touches and being involved instead of waiting at the corner

Ayers is not that bad. Hes very good defensively and if he didnt drop the ball as much, people would notice his defense alot more. very good rebounder as well.

He improves every time out and just needs more PT. This will be a blessing in disguise. Ayers will be very usefull come playoff time.

Yes. He's awful on both ends. Bad hands, no offensive game, can only dunk and even fucks that up half the time. Can't defend, mostly just stands there and fouls people, only rebounds uncontested boards or when surrounded by guys 6'4 and under. The useless scrub has played just about every game this season, almost 10 minutes per game, and he's still a pile of dog shit. He doesn't need more minutes, he needs more DNPs.

HarlemHeat37

:lol Ayres' defensive on/off metrics are average at best, and his opponent's production metrics are horrible..when a player sucks on offense yet still receives playing time, there's the illusion that he's a quality defender..he's an average defender and poor offensive player..he shouldn't be anything more than a 5th big IMO..

This is a huge blow, especially if Pop keeps Beli in the starting lineup, tbh..the defense is going to be even worse, and they were already struggling..it also hurts because Splitter was beginning to find some offensive rhythm for the first time since returning to the lineup..as we all know by now, it takes Splitter a few weeks(at least) to get his offensive rhythm back following an injury..

Silver linings:

- More Leonard at the 4, which is his most effective position in the NBA..during last year's playoffs, his breakout stretch, he played 36% of his minutes at the 4, with 60% of his Finals minutes being allocated at that position..

- More Leonard/Diaw/Duncan frontcourt minutes..

- If the Spurs struggle, it could expose the need for a change up front..

Its not like we were beating top teams anyway. :lol At least now we can pull the Splitter injury card.

Mario Chalmers is probably the most upset about this since he won't get the chance to dunk on him and block 2 of his shot attempts when we play the Heat on the 26th.

tbh if he does play, at least there's a chance he'll play well 50% in at least half of the games he's in. while that's not great, it's better than Airs and his wetting the bed every game.

Good...test the Spurs depth and get needed development from relatively new frontcourt players. Perfect time for a moderate injury.

As I said in the other thread, not unexpected seeing Tiago history in recovering from injuries... He'll be back post-ASB if there are no setbacks and hopefully he can pick up where he left off... fortunately this injury also prevents him from practicing that horrible hook shot, so it's not all bad, tbh...

uh, no Pop, Splitter played decent his first year; you just didn't play his ass and got assfucked by Memphis in the playoffs because of it. Ayres is cut from the same cloth as Kwame Brown, except not as good as Brown

:lol Pop spouting more bullshit. Not surprising coming from the same man that called Keith Bogans our "centerpiece" on defense a few years back.

Also, like to add that having Ayres replace Splitter will just make the starting lineup even worse than it's already been the past few weeks. Diaw's the obvious choice but I doubt Pop goes that route since he's been pretty incompetent with rotations this year(probably a result of having a shitty coaching staff).

Bruno
01-05-2014, 08:43 PM
It could have been worst. Some shoulder injuries are season ending.

Spurs defense has been shitty when Tiago hasn't been on the court. Other bigmen will seriously need to up their defensive level to compensate Splitter's loss.

Regarding the rotation, I would go with Parker/Green/Leonard/Diaw/Duncan as starting unit.

I swear if we start Ayers instead of Diaw...

I'm pretty sure that's what will happen, depending on the matchup. Diaw fits really well with the 2nd unit. He'll probably close games, but doubt he starts. Ayres has looked better, there's no better way for him to learn than just playing.

Start Diaw and Green. That should be a good defensive unit. Rotate Ayres and Baynes at the five, and Bonner and Thomas at the four. Each should get equal opportunity. There's a good rotation in there somewhere.

Agree. I've been thinking that Pop wouldn't change his Beli starter experiment until ASG (he didn't change the lineup after Rox/NYK games despite Marco's mistakes on D and I assumed that the experiment would extend for a few weeks more), but Tiago's absence requires the inclusion another defender like Green in starting five.

Spurs always have the ability to turn adversity into bonding and strength. The silver lining is that Splitter only misses a portion of the regular season after establishing the Spurs at a strong position already.

I'm like wtf saying that but more bonner could be a good thing :lol

seriously tho, having a bit more of Matt during RS will help on the spacing. I wouldn't mind to see a bit more of Tim / Bonner
