The National Football League’s $914 million settlement of claims tied to player concussions was denied preliminary approval by a federal judge who said she is concerned that not all players will be paid.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in Philadelphia yesterday said that a $675 million compensation fund included in the settlement may be insufficient to cover a class of about 20,000 retired players for a 65-year term. She asked for more documentation including economic analyses conducted by plaintiff lawyers.

Do retired players with concussion issues even deserve a settlement? If they do, is the amount suitable? If not, what would be a suitable amount for all parties involved?

I'm not so sure we should be treating concussions like asbestos as if injuries weren't expected in this line of work. It's inherent to the very nature of the sport. Although, I think contracts should have more security for the players. That's a entirely different subject altogether. But it does in some ways tie in to this discussion.

Sorry, I wasn't terribly specific. Players that were sent back in after being concussed deserve to be compensated. I'm sure more than a few kickers and punters have had their clocks cleaned pretty well in special teams coverage, too. It's a huge mess.

Why would the NFL get taxed? It's just a trade organization. It's made up of 32 teams that already pay loads of taxes. Taxing the NFL would be taxing the teams twice.

The NFL covering up the true danger of concussion warrants them being sued, though. It would be one thing if they hadn't done that, and the players were suing for something no one saw coming.
