Siegelman Proclaims Robert Horry Day in State of Alabama
RollTide.com, 08/02/02

Gov. Don Siegelman today proclaimed "Robert Horry Day" in Alabama and honored the Alabama native during a reception at the Governor's Mansion for his accomplishments in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

"From his days of dunking at Andalusia High to draining three-pointers for the L.A. Lakers, Robert has truly made the most of his opportunity to live his dream of playing basketball," Siegelman said. "I speak for all Alabamians in saying, Robert Horry will always be a champion in our hearts and a role model for our children."

More than 250 children from Montgomery and the surrounding area were invited to the reception. Many of the children play basketball in the Montgomery YMCA and other leagues. Also among those invited to the reception at the Governor’s Mansion was Horry’s former University of Alabama coach Wimp Sanderson, his former Crimson Tide teammate James “JJ” Jackson, and his former Andalusia High head coach Richard Robertson.

Horry grew up in Andalusia, where he was named Naismith's Alabama High School Basketball Player of the Year and named Mr. Basketball by Alabama sports writers during his senior year. The Naismith Award is named for James A. Naismith, who was recognized as the inventor of basketball. Naismith winners are selected for boys and girls basketball annually in each state.

Horry starred at the University of Alabama from 1989-92, where he was named to the All-SEC Team twice and played on three Southeastern Conference Tournament Championship Teams in 1989, 1990 and 1991.

He was drafted in the first round of the 1992 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for the 1992-93 season. During the 1996-97 season, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns and, later that same year, traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Horry has played in the playoffs in every one of his 10 seasons in the NBA. He has played on five NBA Championship Teams, two with Houston (1994 and 1995) and three with Los Angeles (2000, 2001 and 2002).

Robert and his wife, Keva, reside in Houston, Texas with their two children, Ashlyn and Camron.

Last week, Siegelman established the Alabama State Sports Commission (ASSC) by Executive Order Number 72. ASSC will promote sports development and sports tourism in the state and promote the health and wellness of Alabamians statewide.

"Alabama takes great pride in the vast number of sporting activities available for citizens to enjoy," Siegelman said. "Many of those sporting events provide substantial economic benefits for communities and the state. This commission will promote Alabama as an ideal site for a variety of sporting events, as well as work to protect and promote the health of all Alabama athletes, particularly our children."

Horry thanks Andalusia for honors

Sammy Glover, who headed a committee which planned the Robert Horry Day ceremony at Andalusia Elementary School last week, addressed the council about the success of the event. Horry, an Andalusia native and a standout basketball player with the National Basketball Association's (NBA's) Los Angeles Lakers, was honored last Wednesday before over 1,000 people.

"(Horry) asked me to extend to the council, (Mayor Earl Johnson) and the entire city government his appreciation for last Wednesday," said Glover. "He was overwhelmed with emotions and he was truly moved by the community, and the expression of love that was shown to him was something he did not expect, and he did not expect the number of people to turn out and all of the acknowledgments that he was given."

Glover said he would like to thank the mayor and the council for sponsoring the ceremony and all those who worked behind the scenes of the event.

He also said Horry expressed his excitement about coming back to Andalusia next year, when a park on North Cotton Street will be named in his honor.

Glover said the NBA requested and has received a tape of last Wednesday's ceremony, which will be placed in the NBA archives.

"(The NBA) does not remember an event of that significance being put on for an NBA player," said Glover. "I think this is something that the citizens of Andalusia and the City of Andalusia can be proud of."

Johnson thanked Glover for all of the work that he and the planning committee did regarding the event.

"I don't believe (the ceremony) could have come off any better than it did," said Johnson. "It looked like everything was planned, and that was because of the hard work of the committee and every person on the committed contributed," said Johnson. "The city employees did a wonderful job (with the ceremony) and I was very proud of our city and I was overwhelmed with the turnout. We had a tremendous turnout and we have five television stations in Andalusia to cover that event. I dare say that in the history of Andalusia, there has never been five television stations to cover any event. Even the "Voodoo Mayor" (former Florala Mayor H.T. Mathis) did not draw five stations. I look forward to another to another Robert Horry Day."

Apparently this was all the idea of Andalusia's mayor, Diamond Joe Quimby.
