Can't feel too bad for Thomas. IIRC, Spurs guaranteed his contract already, so he just got paid a minimum deal to play in like two games, and now he can either go back to the DLeague and continue to develop, or go to a team that will actually give him playing time.

I can't see the Spurs releasing Thomas for another D-leaguer... Just seems like a move that makes no sense.. especially considering his contract became guaranteed.

This has the making for a trade or free agent signing with a veteran player IMO.

Pop just said in an interview after the Milwaukee game he's developing him. The only reason to wave him is to sign someone who's a 3, Thomas being a 4, because we Absolutely need someone there.

Yeah, but releasing him for a guaranteed contract in my opinion shows that they are looking for something bigger. Not to mention a "10 day deal" seems like they are just looking for someone to fill the void right now - while they target a trade.

Still don't know why they didn't keep Thomas for that though.

Chinook
01-23-2014, 02:50 PM
They could waive him at any time. If they needed his spot for a bigger deal, they could have waited until right before it happened. They probably do juat intend to sign 10-days for now.

This is just odd. They really guaranteed MT's deal strictly because they saw him as a PF only when the Spurs already have a ton of PF's??

If you believe in someone, why on Earth would you let them go for a stop gap D-Leaguer who's not proven anything? Just because he already had a previous stint with you?

Bruno

Spurs are so far below the tax that they could afford this kind of move financially wise. They can "waste" a few $100K easily.

What made Thomas special was his new found 3 point shooting and he has been atrocious for about 1 month in that area. Not only was he missing his shots, but he was missing them badly. If Spurs have reached the conclusion that his early 3 point shooting streak was a fluke and that he would likely never be a good 3 point shooter, waiving him isn't a big deal.

The FO looks out of control since the Finals tbh... Shitty move after shitty move... Ayres + Beli + picking up Cojo's option + signing Thomas and waiting after the deadline to waive him, basically paying him to play in the D league... And now we have Jeffers...

DPG21920

Waiving MT is not the issue - it's the logic. If they believe he was a PF only, why even bother signing him? If you believe he had improved his 3PT shot enough to guarantee his money, why then lose faith after one month of not so good 3PT shooting?

The money aspect is irrelevant to me. Its the logic and the fact they want to replace his spot on the roster with a guy who sucks. Others might suck too, but there are a few guys who appear to be better fits and suck less with more upside.

Because if he was able to shoot constantly 3 pointers, he would have been something special.

If you believe he had improved his 3PT shot enough to guarantee his money, why then lose faith after one month of not so good 3PT shooting?

Because his hot 3 point shooting has only last 5 games.

Thomas first 5 D-League games: 16/27 from behind the arc.
Thomas next 8 D-league games: 4/19 from behind the arc.

Sure, but the Spurs had a lot of one on one time with him in practice. They surely didn't sign him based off just what they saw in the D League..If they signed him, worked with him and guaranteed his deal, I don't see why they would sour on him because of his next 19 shots..

Spurs could have been on the fence about it at the guaranteed deadline. Just before that deadline, Thomas had some kind of concussion and Spurs could have put his strugglings on it.

Something to consider is Chip input on that subject. He might have said that Thomas needed to tweak is shooting form to become a reliable 3 point shooter. Chip and Thomas worked together on tweaking it but it didn't worked so Chip told Pop that he likely wouldn't be able to turn him into a good 3 point shooter.

Obviously Spurs can live without Thomas, but he's a really good defender -and athletic-.
He knows the Spurs systems better than other new guy of D-League, what was the problem if Spurs kept the guy in the team?
He isn't a 3's shooter? Well, we need defense right now.

Well, you're talking about Thomas covering up perimeter players, something he has very little or even never done. I'm not sold on him being "really good" at that.

DPG21920
01-23-2014, 03:45 PM
The only thing that makes sense to me is the Spurs soured on MT (no big deal) and with this Kawhi injury know they need a SF. In their search, no trade has come up that either they like or another team likes and many other available SF's won't sign with the Spurs either with a 10-day. So Jeffers is the first on the list (even if way down on the list) of things they can do.

Seems a little out there, but maybe. I think they honestly believe Jeffers is the best option available which blows my mind.

Bruno
01-23-2014, 03:51 PM
But don't we already know that Jeffers isn't?

Jeffers is presented as a good defender and unlike Thomas, he has played some SF in his career.

Now, I'm' not a fan of a potential Jeffers signing. To me, it would be clearly just a temporary emergency answer.

I know, he's more PF (even he played as C in Fisher's system and Kawhi as PF) but he's versatile. There are worse things in the world than have an athletic guy like him in the team.
For example: Cory and Beli at SF.

Jeffers doesn't have to be the only move they make. If they were willing to eat Thomas' money, they'll eat a 10-day. I imagine they're still open to making moves, but rightfully, they don't need to panic. Whomever they get will be on the bench with a healthy rotation. They don't need to overpay for that.

:lol This is what the Spurs do. They get some scrub no one has ever heard of---> ST overrates him ---> Spurs FO cuts him ---> ST meltdown. By now you should all know how the Spurs operate. They do this every year. The next guy that comes in from the d-league or wherever will be just another guy to take up space.

The only reason to get excited is if the Spurs make a block buster mid-season trade, but we all know that isn't going to happen, right? Holt & friends will make damn sure to milk the Big 3 for as long as they can before they realize they have to pony up to bring some real talent in to SA.

Ayres is POPS project, he is not going anywhere anytime soon and will probably be re-signed when his contact is up (Bet on it). This is his new Bonner.

It's embarrassing but it's true.

I'm not sure how much Ayres is Pop's project, or Boylen's.

Then again, Pop is the one who keeps calling him off the bench.

Did you waive back?

Scenario: say our injuries all sort out, and since Malcolm has the Spurs money, he can afford to be more picky in his callups. The Spurs decide they want him back for development. He's available. Do they have to pay him another $700K if they want to re-sign him? Or can they just resume or re-activate his contract?

Well Jeffries looked like a poor man's Kawhi last game, so it's not bad for a cheap replacement. But yeah, I'd rather have someone else useful for the playoffs.

If he's claimed off waivers, the Spurs do not pay, correct?

That's a good news financially wise for Spurs. They won't have to pay the rest of Thomas contract (about $400K) and his whole contract is off the book regarding the luxury tax (about $700k).

Basketball wise, it quite close the door to a possible Thomas come back with Spurs this year.

Thanks Bruno. It's also good because now Spurs' fans have one less thing to whine about.

Well, if Thomas produces with Utah, you will see tons of whining. While there will be likely some exaggeration, some of this whining will be justified.

And in the case of Thomas being good, it should entice even more Utah to trade away Marvin Williams, a player Spurs could targeted.

CIA Pop? :) Tangentially, how does Jean-Charles' game compare to Thomas' game?

Jean-Charles is more mobile and is able to defend perimeter players. Thomas is more of a inside presence.

maybe this had something to do with the spurs waiving him...given scott layden's ties to the jazz, perhaps they knew of utah's interest and that thomas would get a better shot in utah and free up a space for the spurs...kind of win-win for everyone...and pretty poppovicean?

:lol :rollin As soon as teams (NBA and dleague!) figured out that Mal could shoot the 3, they ran him off the line, and his percentages plummeted.

I think this thread will do just fine when Mal blows up and becomes a 'star'. :lol

Yep, it's possible that Spurs knew Utah would claim Thomas before they waived him. For Spurs, it made the move easier because they knew they wouldn't have to pay his remaining salary.
