Oxfam slams Goddess over SodaStream ad campaign

Oxfam International is criticizing Scarlett Johansson over her new ad campaign for an Israeli company that operates in the West Bank.Israeli drink maker SodaStream International Ltd. recently signed the U.S. actress as its first "global brand ambassador." (http://www.haaretz.com/business/1.568108) She is to appear in a television ad during the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.
SodaStream has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank.
Johansson has served as a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2005, raising funds and promoting awareness about global poverty.
The humanitarian group said that while it respects the independence of the company's ambassadors, it opposes "all trade" from Israeli settlements, claiming they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights. "We have made our concerns known to Ms. Johansson and we are now engaged in a dialogue on these important issues," it said.
SodaStream machines allow consumers to make their own carbonated drinks at home and add a variety of flavors. Johansson has called her partnership with the company a "no brainer," saying it is a healthy and environmentally friendly product.
Representatives for Johansson did not return messages seeking comment.
SodaStream says its West Bank factory is one of about 25 production facilities worldwide and employs nearly 550 Palestinians and gives them equal benefits as Israeli workers.

While I never intended on being the face of any social or political movement, distinction, separation or stance as part of my affiliation with SodaStream, given the amount of noise surrounding that decision, I'd like to clear the air.I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine. SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’ale Adumim factory every working day. As part of my efforts as an Ambassador for Oxfam, I have witnessed first-hand that progress is made when communities join together and work alongside one another and feel proud of the outcome of that work in the quality of their product and work environment, in the pay they bring home to their families and in the benefits they equally receive.
I believe in conscious consumerism and transparency and I trust that the consumer will make their own educated choice that is right for them. I stand behind the SodaStream product and am proud of the work that I have accomplished at Oxfam as an Ambassador for over 8 years. Even though it is a side effect of representing SodaStream, I am happy that light is being shed on this issue in hopes that a greater number of voices will contribute to the conversation of a peaceful two state solution in the near future.

The 29-year-old beauty professes how she loves "helping people" in the ad that aims to shed some light on an eco-friendly alternative to soda cans.
"Like most actors, my real job is saving the world," ScarJo says at the beginning of the commercial. "Look, a soda that's better for you and all of us."
She's first seen wearing a white robe as she demonstrates just how easy the SodaStream system is to use and describes its health and environmental bonuses, "Less sugar, less bottles."

SodaStream suddenly gets steamy as the music slows and the "Her" actress takes a seductive swig of her drink.


Johansson recently became the company's global brand ambassador for reasons that went beyond her pretty face.

But the actress’ involvement with the brand has caused quite a stir with Oxfam International (http://www.oxfam.org/en), an international confederation of 17 organizations working together in more than 90 countries. Still, the charity’s opposition wasn’t enough for Johannson to jump ship from SodaStream.
