I got to my hotel room early today and was waiting for a few co-workers to get into town before going to eat and the hotel TV was set for CNN to come on so I watched for 30 minutes or so (can't remember the last time I actually watched CNN/NBC/MSNBC/Fox/etc.). In that 30 minutes, they talked about the grammys, Justin Beiber, and the fact New Jersey is butthurt about all the superbowl attention New York is getting.
Who here actually still watches this garbage?

I stopped watching all cable news about 3 years ago. In fact I barely watch tv anymore except sports, docs, and movies. I get my news from Winehole.

Idk how cable companies stick around. Only reason I still have mine is sports and HBO (what can I say, liberals like Bill Maher). If the anti-trust bullshit that goes on between cable TV and pro sports ever fell apart, the cable companies would be toast.

I will watch the Daily Show if I see they have a cool guest on but other than that I just read a lot.

My wife likes to watch HLN for the showbiz stuff and Dr Drew.
I only watch NBA basketball and the occasional soccer game...

Alex Jones is a highly entertaining nut and a lot of the news that he talks about is actually true and yes he does have the documents(articles). When I watch videos on his youtube channel, I am astounded by the shit he talks about.

I happened to watch the CBS evening news a few nights back when I was at my parents house. My dad also still likes getting the newspaper.

I think the 30-minute evening news, if done right, can still serve a valuable purpose. While they're highly flawed, in the very few times I've actually watched network news in the past few years I still think they are the closest thing in MSM to fact-based, objective reporting of the daily news people need to be aware of.
The problem with cable news is that there's never 24 hours of material in a given news day, especially that people will sit through commercials to watch, so there's a lot of filler in the form of "analysis" (which is where the useless pundits come in), as well as speculation. With nightly news, you have a deadline, so you can validate your reporting. With cable news, you're always on, so you might as well just throw everything out there and call it unverified so you can at least be early in reporting it.

Millenials are mostly (1) used to entertainment on demand (2) broke as shit with no hope for the future so won't pay $50 a month for cable. LOL cable TV is going to end up as f:lolcked as the newspapers tbh.

Welfare Cobra listens to mainstream newsmedia though.
My husband likes to watch the evening network news, I think because he has always done it. I don't watch it because anything on it has already been covered on the internet for 5 hours before that.
If there is a big tragedy or something I will look in on CNN or something.

good thread tbh.
no I rarely watch. if I watch any it's Fox News, not because I agree with what they are saying, it's just the most entertaining, plus the best bimbos on the air besides those hot latinas who do weather reports.
but I honestly can't remember last time I watched. Even when that Sandy Hook tragedy occurred, I didn't even watch any coverage because I know it's the same thing of reporters acting like they'll cry while still exploiting the situation imo.
Another aspect is I do think the mainstream media is by and large liberal. Perhaps liberal isn't the right word, maybe more status quo and agenda driven. Even the people who interview Jay Carney or HNIC seem like part of a dog and pony show. I guess it all seems like bullshit, at least to me, so I mainly just browse around various websites. If the Ruskies were able to control their mainstream media, I don't think it's out of the question large sections of our media are towing the company line, imho.

My friend's HBO Go login also works for Watch ESPN. I went off cable in August for the first time in my life tbh, been very happy not having it. Netflix + Amazon Prime streaming does pretty well to round things out.

net neutrality can be easily established again by the FCC, but since they haven't done it,yet, a big worry that corps will fuck the internet like they fuck everything

The more I do the math in my head I keep coming to the conclusion that it might be cheaper just to go to the bar to watch whatever live sports I needed cable for.

I used to really love CNN. Then Fox came along with its shitty infotainment preferred narrative model and kicked the shit out of conventional journalism.
CNN to their credit has generally avoided the "let me tell you what to think" model that Fox goes for, but went in whole hog for the entertainment bullshit.
I quit watching it, or any other years ago.
For me, NPR is one of the last bastions of decent journalism left the world. That and the Economist.
There is just no comparison. Newspapers in the US are sadly thinning out.
It is all a steady drumbeat of stupefying crap, the intellectual equivalent of puff pastries. People don't like to take the effort to be informed. That is too difficult.
People should learn to eat their veggies, IMO.

Never been all that impressed with Netflix, and cable is getting too expensive and stupid.
What does amazon prime have that is worth watching?

I have had amazon prime since it started for the 2 day shipping, but they have actually made their catalog decent lately. Justified is on there, and some other series I do like:

I don't watch many movies on it or netflix, but they also had Goonies. They also have the Avatar: Last Airbender series, which both my daughter and I enjoy.

Agreed, tbh.... though, I don't think Media is liberal or conservative, they're just all in bed with the government in order to get favors and access, tbh.... notice how neither side criticizes the President for anything other than the most superficial wedge issues, tbh.....

Bingo, the media doesn't stand for any ideals, liberal or conservative, just whatever the status quo is.

Charlie Rose (when he does not have entertainer guests)
Sunday morning can have some good stuff

CNN and the others have about 9 things going across the screen at once. A mile wide and an inch deep.
News online mostly. I get the Economist in the mail, but with work it's hard to get to all of it. Probably won't renew. My personal favorite though.
