View Full Version : Is Tony Parker too old?

He looks like he lost 5 steps this summer. He's lost that speed edge that was his best asset. And his midrange will never be able to carry a team to a championship.
What do you think? Trade him if we don't win it this year? He'll only get slower.

bad back, IMO. Non-Issue.

He has admitted that he's tired according to Bruno and other posters IIRC..
He played Summer ball after an NBA Finals run, he's obviously exhausted..it's time for Pop to put him on the Duncan rest plan, tbh..
I assumed this would be the plan and Kawhi would be running more offense this year, but Pop has decided to continue running Parker into the ground, which is puzzling IMO..

Man time is flying. I remember posts back in the day like "Parker is only 23", "but Parker is only 24" or "Parker is not even in his prime yet." Now threads like this are popping up. The years are just flying by.

He can rest after the WCF, OKC will be tough to beat...Portland, not so much.
During the rockets b2b run, they rested Hakeem for about a month 2 months before the playoffs both years. Gave him some a fake injury, then got a month to shake off the rust and was recharged for the playoff push.

Lol, dude went bananas on Monday but now all the sudden he's too old. He's definitely tired, but Parker has 3-4 good years left. Spurs are going to give him an extension for three more years this offseason; no doubt in my mind.

parker is playing less minutes except for his rooking season

Heck, I was a Highschool freshman during his rookie year. And now, I'm 4 years out of college already. Can't believe time flies this quick

Here come the trade-a-holics, one bad game and they're ready to trade off the whole team.

Because Kawhi has been out for WEEKS? Could that be the reason?

Not a fake injury, but rather respect/concern for Hakeem's health during Ramadan (a month of fasting).

I remember this as well. The changes in his diet caused some actual healthi issues related to his heart and/or his circulation. He could not go the full 82 in several seasons because of this and like you guys said he even missed some long stretches of games.

Doesn't add up. Ramadan is in late June thru July. That's offseason, even for champs.

Being an infidel, I do not know the Muslim schedule, but there may be more than one period of fasting? I'm just guessing, but Hakeem's shut downs were a result of something related to his fasting.

According to wiki, Ramadan shifts ten or twelve days back every year. In '94, the fasting period would have started on Feb 12. In '95, the fasting period would have stated on Feb 1.

Does everyone here seriously believe he is as explosive as he was last year (pre ankle injury when he was an MVP candidate), or the year before, or the year before?
He's noticeably slower.
Falling down with every layup attempt for 10 straight years has caught up to him.

Even last season he was pretty much gassed every other game of the post season or had some nagging injury that hampered him. He is not going to be able to carry the offense on his shoulders much longer and Pop really hasn't done much to groom Leonard for the role so I'm really wondering just where the offense is going to come in that starting unit.

I see ST is still 80% latino homers..

Parker is an All Star, shoots over 50%, and he carries the team in the 4th. Yet I dont see any good Parker threads on ST. Just a bunch of dipshits with keyboards on here

We've all come to accept that Manu's in TOSB mode, especially after that disastrous Finals. He's old, overpaid. and injury-prone. But he's 36 so it's expected. If Manu can give us a good 15-20 minutes every night with a vintage performance here and there, it's more than enough.
Parker's 30 years old. He's supposed to be in his prime. No excuse for him to be playing so shitty.

RE: Parker is an All Star,
Didn't deserve the spot seeing as he wasn't even the best player on his own team. He got in simply because of team record.
shoots over 50%,
Look beyond the numbers. Kobe put up great box-score stats last year when he was actually negatively affecting the team. I have League Pass - watched every Spur game this year. TP's game looks like it's regressed back to shitty mid-2000s Tony Parker. He's not the same player he was last year.
and he carries the team in the 4th
You're thinking of last year's Tony Parker.

You have league pass? Then how did you miss him being one of the top 4th quarter scorers?
Parker is putting great numbers, and the team is winning. Your Kobe argument is invalid.
Not the best player on the team? Who do you think kept the Spurs winning when Timmy was playing like dog shit?
Parker was an MVP candidate this time last year, of course he's not the same he's tired after Manu cost them a loooooooong playoff run

He does not deserve to be an All Star this year, calm down. There are more than 8 better guards than TP right now.

In the west? Name them. Parker has carried this team to atleast 15-20 of their 38 wins. I can name 15 better shooting guards than Manu right now

Realistically there was no way a guy could go through his career falling down 20 times a game on layups for a decade. Allen Iverson didn't last that long, tbh. Parker's already defied the odds staying elite this long.

I don't care about Manu, before you say anything, tbh(and I'm a big fan of your trolling potential, as I have stated in the past), but Parker has been awful this year..
His advanced on/off metrics have plummeted compared to last year, he's barely a net positive for the team this season..he isn't an All-Star this year, tbh..

It's not worrisome to me. Maybe it is to him since he has to live with it forever.

15 non-starters better than Manu? No way. And Manu is not an all star anymore, why are you talking about Manu? Of course there will be better SGs than Manu, the man plays 25 minutes per game (while the others SGs must play 28-32 minutes per game) and TP plays 30-32 per game..
The red part, scoring doesn't always mean you are carrying the team, hello.

He has been bad I agree, but IMO the only snub that can take his All Star spot is Cousins. I do support TP though he at least tries to play with injuries, and ST doesn't give him the credit he deserves. I guess people aren't used to seeing tough foreigners on this team

Parker's impact statistics are mediocre this year. Big difference compared to last year.
Not the best player on the team? Who do you think kept the Spurs winning when Timmy was playing like dog shit?
TD has a terrible November(started slow) but he's been better than Parker ever since. Here's their numbers from December to February:
Duncan: 17 ppg/11 rpg/2 bpg on 52%
Parker: 17.4 ppg/6 apg on 48%
Parker was an MVP candidate this time last year, of course he's not the same he's tired after Manu cost them a loooooooong playoff run
He's tired? Then why the fuck did he play for France after a long post-season last year? FIBA tournaments are a joke with low attendances and shitty tv viewership. It's insulting that he chose to prioritize a minority fanbase in his own country over the hundreds of thousands of Spur fans in San Antonio. Now he's resting on company time instead of earning his paycheck. Even worse, it puts even more strain on 38 year old Duncan to continue carrying the team.

Definitely not mentally tough. TP was choking against the Lakers all the way back in 2004. Fast-forwad ten years later and he's still disappointing Spur fans with his inability to step up in the post-season. 15 ppg on 40% in the Finals. Weak numbers from a first option "MVP candidate"
