While a lot of people probably didn't like the whole The Decision stuff with ESPN and what not, don't forget all the greats have had the media complicit in self-promotion one way or the other (ie: the venerable flu game, the AIDS edition of the All Star, etc).

To his credit, he bid his time on the franchise that drafted him, went through difficult times (like the finals sweep), and finally figured out how to play the game the right way and be dominant at the same time.
