The Los Angeles Lakers had found a trade for Bryant, but Buss warned him that it wasn't to one of his selected destinations.

"Detroit," Buss said.

The Lakers had agreed to a deal to send Bryant to the Pistons and needed Bryant's approval to waive his no-trade clause. The package included a combination of Detroit's core players and draft picks, sources say. Buss and Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak needed an answer soon, because they refused to let the issue linger into training camp.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Spurs arrived Thursday evening with 13 players, one more, apparently, than with which they intended to depart San Antonio.

The Spurs nearly traded Brent Barry on Thursday afternoon in a multi-team deal that would have netted New Orleans guard J.R. Smith, two NBA sources said.

The deal was close enough to completion — one opposing team executive said he had heard it was done — that Spurs officials initially told Barry he might not need to board the team's charter flight here.

The deal unraveled near the league's 2 p.m. trade deadline, which was an hour before the Spurs were scheduled to depart. After Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told Barry the trade was dead, Barry accompanied the team here.

This trade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc) was terrible from all angles, and its subsequent veto momentarily saved the 76er brain trust from themselves, though their “genius” would eventually take shape. Rather than discuss and dissect the epic failure of this proposed trade, let us just reflect:

Sixers Get: Eddie Jones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc), Glen Rice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc), Jerome Williams (please see montage above) and Dale Ellis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc)

Detroit (http://bleacherreport.com/detroit-pistons) Gets: Allen Iverson and Matt Geiger
Charlotte Gets: Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner and Travis Knight
LA Lakers Get: Anthony Mason, Toni Kukoc and Todd Fuller

2) 2007: Kobe Bryant to the Chicago Bulls
Deng is very much in play in the conversations between Chicago and Los Angeles, ESPN.com has learned.
And it's mainly because of Bryant's wishes that Deng is still wearing a Chicago uniform.
A source with knowledge of the trade talks said Deng has been included in proposals swapped between the teams, but Bryant has continually threatened to veto almost any deal in which Deng would be included. Bryant wants to be sure that the team he joins has enough talent remaining to compete for the NBA title.

Kids these days with their trade demands. Back in the glory days of -- hang on. There were ongoing discussions with the Heat and many players named (http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1992-09-05/sports/9201190877_1_salary-cap-rony-seikaly-rockets) (DJ Rony Seikaly (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/09/sports/basketball/09seikaly.html?pagewanted=all)!) before things calmed down, allowing Olajuwon to win two titles and Seikaly to stay on South Beach before taking his talents to Ibiza.

There are a few that really bother me currently.

1) Pau Gasol for Rajon Rondo 2011-2012. Apparently, Boston was good with the deal going through but the Lakers wanted more. Fuckin Rondo for washed up Pau?!

2) Dwight Howard for Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes. GSW offered the trade but Fredo said D12 to LA is a shoe in. Then after the playoffs the begging followed and ultimately another horrific move by the stellar disaster that is Fredo Buss.

Why would you need either of those losers when you've got a 5 time NBA world champion taking all of your shots? The chance at a big man who could rebound and give the ball back to Kobe was worth it over 2 guys who'd never touch it.
