That tune has been covered by tons of artists, Nick Cave, The White Strips, Gov't Mule, Chris Thomas King to name a few, below is the 1928 original and it is a classic. Eric Clapton has called Blind Willie the greatest slide man ever, no argument here. His step mother threw lye in his face trying to hit his father, hence......"Blind" Willie Johnson. His "Soul of a Man" also has been covered many times, he was a Texan. He was discovered singin' on a street corner performing for spare change.

You cannot talk American music and not mention the great Jimmie Rodgers. I have most of his stuff, you'd mix him in with Emmett Miller, The Carter Family, Frank Hutchison, Gene Autry, Clarence Ashley and the Skillet Lickers.

Actually he recorded TB Blues in 1931 and while he knew his fate he hung on until 1933. Yep, a sad song. Ernest Tubb in his first recording session in 1937 does a great cover.

When it comes to sad/tragic songs....
